Yeah, it hasn’t even been five months since ‘Folklore’ was released! :O

I’m not complaining though, since the album is, once again, amazing.

I read that 'Hand in glove' by the smiths (not the version with Sandie Shaw) reached a peak position of 124. Since only the top 100 is published, how is it possible to verify what I read?

if artists are only allowed 3 songs in the chart how come justin bieber has 5

avatar

Foxes

3

Bieber has 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree' at #21, 'Lonely' at #42 and 'Mistletoe' at #43.
Shawn Mendes has 'Monster' at #26, which has Bieber as a lead artist but counts towards Shawn's total because he's the primary lead artist and it was released on his label.

just listened to holiday and it’s really really cool, i hope it reaches top 40 sometime soon. strong 7/10 for now.

also have you heard “tyler herro” by jack harlow? that’s really underrated and i don’t want jack to be a one hit wonder, especially when that song is awesome!

avatar

eternalricardo

2

Hey dude, Glad you also like 'Holiday'! I'd personally give it an 7 or 8.

I have heard Tyler Herro, I thought it was pretty nice but it has way less hit potential than Whats Poppin imo. I'm pretty sure Jack Harlow's releasing an album soon, so maybe he can get another hit from there :)

I gaurantee at least one of the Christmas #2s (All I Want, Last or Fairytale) will be #1 this year. First week of Jan, when they all sell most is Positions' first ACR week...

December is the only time i get excited about the charts, I thin I became a chart part timer in 1998...

CZ

Charting Zebra

-1

The charts have been largely a listening chart for a long time. To make them relevant as a something close to what the sales chart was is to consider what is the equivalent to a sale of a physical record and download of an mp3?

As an example, only allow the first 30 plays by a single user to count as a sale. This would stop the endless plays through time that would never have counted towards anything before in the days of just mp3 or physical record sales.

While I have Spotify, I still listen to most of my old music as mp3s and none of those listens will ever contribute to the charts.

avatar

Foxes

5

The charts already limit it to 10 streams per song for 1 person each day.

CZ

Charting Zebra

-1

It's a start. But an physical sale was kind of always front loaded and the amount you played it weeks, months and years later never counted towards chart "sales" like they do now

avatar

Foxes

3

The way I see it, that's because the artist only got money when you bought the single, whereas with streaming an artist gets money with every single play.

CZ

Charting Zebra

0

Fair point maybe they should get the same amount then when those equivalent sales by a single listener are reached? And nothing after...

avatar

Foxes

3

Personally I'd like to see chart sales based off how much money is actually made, so for example Apple Music would have a streams:sales ratio of 150:1 since that's roughly how many streams are needed to equal the same amount of money on that platform as 1 sale, Spotify would be 200:1, YouTube would be 1,500:1, etc.

avatar

Joshua Sombra

2

I bet songs like 'Diamonds' by Sam Smith and 'Golden' by Harry Styles will rebound to a higher peak after the Christmas songs have had it's time to chart.

DK

Dave Knight

Quite remarkable at least 15 old Christmas songs in the top 40, which are the same ones that make the charts each year. Does people delete them from their systems each January? Which is why they got to buy them again? How else can a single become a hit year after year?

avatar

Rector

3

Streaming

JB

Jack Brooks

0

It's because of the way streaming "sales" are counted toward the chart.

avatar

David N'jama

2

it's Streaming. people just search and play directly without buying and it impact the charts

avatar

Keybasher

-1

They've decided that it's not good enough to count sales of music they need to count every time you play the CD (stream(. Thank god the charts made more sense when I was a little un.

Although the official sales chart doesn't make for much better reading, it's better.

DK

Dave Knight

0

Shouldn't be allowed to influence the chart in my opinion. Physical sales should only count, or purchased downloads. But preferably physical.

avatar

Foxes

4

There are dozens of people still buying physical singles. Dozens!

DK

Dave Knight

0

But thats the problem, it used to be hundreds of thousands.

avatar

Keybasher

0

Which is why streaming's allowed in.

It would be completely unrepresentative of anything anybody actually listened to if it wasn't.

DK

Dave Knight

0

But thats the awful way things have evolved isnt it? What I mean is if downloading and streaming didnt exist we all would still be happily buying the physical product. We live in a throw away society today, and it seems youngsters today dont really have their heart and soul in the artist or music. When I was growing up I took an equal interest in the artwork of the album, lyric sheet, the artist the whole works, not just the songs. Artists when I was growing up had at least one album out a year and probably 4 or 5 singles per album, and they kept going for decades not months. To me the music industry is in a terrible state and I certainly wouldnt want want to be growing up today. I am proud to say I grew up with the best artists and best music. I think the best 2 decades were 70's and 80's, but the single best 10 years were probably 73 - 83. Streaming if you think about it is no better than waiting to hear your favourite song come on the radio and recording it to tape to play when you like, with no real compassion towards artist or song, compared to putting your effort into buying it. Yes of course we can buy a download, but its not money very well spent is it? In my opinion to get people actually into the music again we need to wipe out streaming and downloading. But what do I know?

DK

Dave Knight

0

The problem is artists are getting a raw deal when it comes to streaming, they simply are not getting paid what they should be. If you are a fan of someone do the right thing and buy the blinking CD.

DK

Dave Knight

0

Well I am 51 years old and would prefer to buy a vinyl single or cd single but the very fact its almost impossible to buy any how can my favourite artists have a hit single anymore? For example I wanted to buy the latest AC/DC single on vinyl ideally but would have settled on a cd single but I cant get either, so how are bands like AC/DC meant to get a hit single if that particular fan base cant purchase the product in a physical format? Now you see what I mean about streaming isnt a fair reflection on what the potential hits that could be in the official top 100. The majority of the charts are made up of a younger audience who are into downloading and streaming which in turn has ommited the variety we used to have when the physical product reigned as the only way to obtain singles.

#5: Puff Daddy & Faith Evans ft 112 - I'll Be Missing You (1997)
#6: Katy Perry - Teenage Dream (2010)
#7: Katy Perry - Last Friday Night [T.G.I.F.] (2011)

avatar

Piran

2

I don’t know... I think there have been more ACR complaints that album bomb complaints! :P

JB

Jack Brooks

0

Because streaming massively accelerates trends that started in the download era like every song from Ed Sheeran's album swallowing up the Top 20 or festive favourites taking up the entire chat every December. As a result the OCC have come up with more convoluted rules on what can qualify etc... but this arguably makes things even worse because the charts become less of an accurate reflection with every manipulation. I don't really know what the answer is.

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (04/12/2020 - 10/12/2020)

🔴 (Negative)

1) Serious question… why did ‘Positions’ have to tie ‘Thank U, Next’ as Ariana’s longest running #1 single?! For as much as the title track of her last album has got a surprisingly low replay factor for me, at least that song had some of her most honest & personal writing to date. It doesn’t deserve to lose that honour to something as uninspired as this!

2) What arguably frustrated me even more is that if ‘Positions’ gets just one more week at the #1, it’ll pass ‘Head & Heart’ (one of the most uplifting songs I’ve ever heard, no exaggeration!), as the longest consecutive leader of 2020! It would just to see the latter lose out on that title in the final month of the year to someone who has already seen huge chart success before, but given that ‘Positions’ isn’t going on ACR for at least another month & most of the songs below it are already on permanent ACR, I’m not getting my hopes up.

3) While we’re on the topic of ACR… this is just one of those weeks which highlights just how unrepresentative this chart can be around the festive period! You wouldn’t exactly hear the Premier League say; “So, if a team have been at the top of the league for ten weeks in total & they don’t win three consecutive games, the number of points they have in the table are halved.”. .. so why should OCC be applying an incredibly similar rule on songs in the charts? It’s been proven time & time again to be ineffective (look at the longevity for ‘Blinding Lights’, ‘Dance Monkey’, ‘Perfect’, even ‘Mr Brightside’!) & it’s about time the rule was dropped now, knowing that we’ll never get another ‘÷’ scenario again, nor anything even coming close to it!

4) Christmas Songs: ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ by Justin Bieber. The only saving grace for this being here is that the original version is charting higher than it!

🟠 (Mixed)

1) I remember that ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ would always re-enter the Top 40 in the first week of December when I first started to listen to Radio 1’s chart show, so to see it in the runner-up position already is truly promising! However, I can’t call this a positive point just yet, because arguably the most iconic Christmas song of all-time doesn’t deserve to peak at #2 for the fifth year in the total (& fourth consecutive); it deserves to go all the way to the top! It seems promising that it could get there next week though, as long as we don’t get another ‘River’ mishap here.

2) ‘34+35’ somehow found its way back into the Top 10! I’m not particularly sure why outside of maybe the official video, but hey, at least it’s a better single than its predecessor.

3) Speaking of Ariana, ‘Santa Tell Me’ replaced ‘POV’ as her third charting entry… so that’s one awesome tune knocking out another awesome tune!
Gary Barlow took the #1 on the albums chart! I don’t mind his solo work, but he was better as part of Take That & I just would’ve been more satisfied seeing Steps or Miley Cyrus take it instead.

4) Christmas Songs: ‘It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas’, ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’, ‘Driving Home For Christmas’, ‘This Christmas’, ‘All You’re Dreaming Of’, ‘It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year’, ‘Holly Jolly Christmas’, ‘Happy Xmas [War Is Over]’ & ‘Jingle Bell Rock’.

🟢 (Positive)

1) ‘Dynamite’ stayed in the Top 40 thanks to it coming off ACR this past week! I expect it to drop out of the chart entirely later this month though.

2) Christmas Songs: ‘Last Christmas’, ‘Fairytale Of New York’, ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’, ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’, ‘Santa Tell Me’, ‘Step Into Christmas’, ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ by Brenda Lee, ‘Underneath The Tree’ (new peak!), ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’, ‘One More Sleep’ & ‘Wonderful Christmastime’.

Thanks for reading everyone! Have a good weekend. :)

I honestly just thought ‘River’ would only be a thing last year & everyone would forget about it in 2020, but apparently not! :P

‘Without Fear’ is indeed an amazing album, but as my profile picture shows, ‘Folklore’ saved this year for me (although ‘Future Nostalgia’ is certainly up there). :)

Oh, so it’s apparently a full album & not a song? Hmm... I like a lot of Lennon Stella’s music, so I look forward to checking that one out! :D

This chart should show the issue with including streams in the chart to anyone. Yes we occasionally got old christmas songs resurrecting themselves during downloads era, but I honestly think we’re getting to the point a release eligibility cut-off should be considered for charts.

It’s meant to represent the biggest music now, yet here we are a few weeks from the end of 2020 and the chart is awash with 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s Christmas songs. It’s utterly insane and it’s understandable why people think modern music is poor when the chart that’s supposed to track sales of music has become one that tracks replay value of music - two completely different things.

Which also comes back to the general whiteness of this year's official chart, perhaps it is actually including youtube streams and spotify and similar streams that is causing this. Back to sales please. Replay value is not the same as good current pop music.

It also must make new artists wonder what the point of releasing anything in December is if it’s going to get swallowed up by streams of ancient songs, which can’t be good for new music overall and might explain Whoopty knocking on Top 10. Absolutely livid at the state of this supposed top 40 that is instead just measuring replay value of christmas songs, it’s as daft as tracking how many times people played a CD when everyone had them.

This issue has been evident with the tik tok problem all year, but it’s really become evident with christmas looming that something needs done.

The way that is compiled needs a complete overhaul and release date caps on re-entries would be a good place to start if you’re going to include streams or even if you’re not.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

1

Its far from perfect but surely back in the day, how many times you played a cd would mean how much you actually liked it? Streaming is the way forward as why should a song that is bought and listened to just once compare to a song that is bought and played 1000 times? Surely the song which has been played more is more 'popular' whilst the current charts are not perfect they are most certainly heading in a better way for popularity although I'm pretty sure that many youngsters out there just pop a song on repeat to effect its chart position, but the charts have always been to show popularity. The amount of plays compared to the amount of buys surely shows popularity more, take the recent charity singles which people buy, not so many people listen even when bought showing a huge entry then disappearing in a week or 2.

There are almost exactly 13,000 artists to have hit singles. The median number of hits is 1, meaning over half (6,500) of them have had just one hit.

The average is 3 to the nearest whole number. I found that astounding. More detailed work will follow regarding, when and what positions those 1-hit artists peaked at, and accounting for artists (e.g. groups) that contain more successful hit acts or a soloist from a more successful group. One example of those is Andrew Ridgely. A one-hit-wonder as a solo artist.

That’s amazing for Kylie! It means that she might get a Top 40 appearance in 2020 after all then. :)

Oh wow, how long did it take you to research all of that? :P

There are faster ways to have found out that single stat, but the method I used was built to be a more powerful research tool enabling hundreds more undiscovered chart facts. At 8 to 10 hours a day every day, most weeks 7 days and some 5-6 days a week, it took both lockdowns and the bit inbetween! Been working on it solidly since March!

Someone published the writers list in the last Guinness hit singles book, it took them 7 years to research, so just over 7 months doesn't seem so bad :-)

So about 1850 hours!

That’s some impressive research! :D

I don’t have all that free time spare sadly, but if I did, I’d totally do something similar, haha.

I think it’s #36 in today’s update, so that’ll hopefully be a new peak for her on Friday! :D

On a similar note the fact that 'Wonderful Christmastime' has re-entered the Top 40 now means that Paul McCartney has appeared on a Top 40 record in SEVEN consecutive decades!

Yeah, as far as I’m aware, he’s the only artist ever to have done this. :)
