I have heard of Gabby Barrett & ‘I Hope’... I’m sorry, but I really detest that song. The lyrics are spiteful, the vocals are overly compressed & the wailing guitars sound awful! :(
Honestly, I hate to say it being a country fan, but it might be among the worst songs of 2020 across any genre.
That being said, I absolutely adore ‘The Good Ones’ from that same album! :D

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (20/11/2020 - 26/11/2020)
🔴 (Negative)
1) ‘Positions’ is at #1 for a month & no, I am now disappointed about that! Yeah, both of Ari’s past two albums have unfortunately suffered from too much initial hype & that can consequently lead to a low replay factor. Not only did that happen with this song, but between the overexposure everywhere & the fact that an amazing closer is lower down but not getting the promotion it deserves, the title track just feels very uninspired & unoriginal at this point! It needs to go. Sorry to any fans!
2) I loved hearing ‘Really Love’ play on the chart show earlier, but it disappointed me that it was playing outside of the Top 10! I honestly thought it would stay in the region way longer than it actually did.
3) ‘Diamonds’ isn’t going to make the Top 10, is it? People really don’t see Sam Smith’s talent when it really shines through, do they?
4) Why Britain? Why are you letting an American drill act with limited charisma, entirely generic lyrics & worst of all, that entirely off-beat wailing in the background into the charts?! This is a sub-genre of rap that’s really upcoming & I’m trying to get more into it too, but this song is not what we want to be representing that sound.
5) Radio 1 always seem to have a thing where they generally put on some bangers or bops that sound amazing to end the week, then they’ll always completely break it abruptly with the odd terrible hit floating about! It was ‘Daisy’ for the past few weeks, but now they’ve taken an unhealthy obsession with ‘Put Your Records On’ & that ear-piercing mess of an “outro” where everything just falls apart even further. Why can’t this just tank already?!
🟠 (Mixed)
1) My prediction that it wouldn’t hold at the top was true, but it was easily one of the biggest sales debuts of the past few months for the Radio 2 charity single! I appreciate the cause, I also certainly appreciate the wide range of music styles & backgrounds that came together to make this possible, especially when they’re all covering an Oasis classic (even if I can’t hear KSI on this at all!), but is it just me, or does “Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ seem a bit more a demanding title than an endearing one? I get that it’s meant with good intentions, but it doesn’t carry the same emotional nor impactful weight that say ‘Times Like This’ or ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ did! Honestly, I don’t care if this drops fast on the charts, I care way more about the sales & proceeds that will go towards helping vulnerable children around the world, so at least this song managed to do that.
2) ‘Lemonade’ will be going on ACR next week! It’s kind of a shame, given how much the song has grown on me, but nobody can say it didn’t have a huge chart run.
3) ‘Golden’ moved up a few places! It wasn’t a highlight from Harry’s new album for me, but it’s a very radio-friendly hit & I could see it defying ACR than most other hits in this region of the chart.
4) On one hand, I’m gutted that ‘Blinding Lights’ will probably be gone next week! I wanted to make it a full year on the charts, as it was so close to getting there, but man, this being its 50th week inside the Top 40 is still beyond incredible.
5) AC/DC getting the fastest-selling album of 2020 so far with 62k combined sales chart is insane, although I can't really comment on it as I haven't listened to enough of it, haha.
🟢 (Positive)
1) Yeah, it might not be anything overly special in the same year that gave us ‘No Time To Die’, but Billie getting a new entry in the runner-up really impresses me! For as much as I hate to call ‘My Future’ a flop, it kind of was, so if Billie is starting possibly a new album cycle with only a few hundred sales away from it, then that’s awesome. As for this song, her brother Finneas’ production suits her deeper tones well, but I’m not too sure about some of the vocal mixing on the hook! This has enough grooviness for Billie to sound interesting to it, but it also loses the same emotional grasp that some of her career highlights have. I don’t know, this is still really good & it’s just the kind of thing the die-hards will love, but it didn’t blow me out of the park to be honest! Still really excited to hear what’s next though.
2) ‘Head & Heart’ didn’t move… I’ll take it if it means it’s going to stick around until next month!
3) Looks like ‘Train Wreck’ might go Top 10 soon if the festive hits don’t eclipse it soon. Honestly, at this point, it’s up there among James Arthur’s powerful ballads & it really should’ve been pushed as a single back in 2016 when it was first released! Oh well, better late than never, I guess.
4) ‘Get Out Of My Head’ got a huge sales boost to propel it into the Top 40! It’s not just huge download numbers which makes me think that this will go a lot higher, but it’s the kind of addictive summer jam that’ll honestly blow up on the radio at any time of year. The thumping piano keys, the swaggery vocal loops & the bouncy drop just make this a lot of fun!
5) Arguably the biggest positive point of them all… Mariah re-enters with her Christmas classic for the 14th consecutive year & two-thirds of the way through November,
6) ‘Holiday’ also coming back was a real surprise! I assume it came over ACR due to the album boost last week, but hey, it’s still a really groovy single & the fact that I wasn’t expecting to see it here again makes it all the more cool that it came back.

This is not a chart. It's a playlist! I have said this before but there is something very wrong with the chart when the top 5 best-selling singles is not all in the top 20. I am not a particular fan of any of these songs but it's just distorted.

Measuring and "charting" popularity, is the whole point of the chart! I'm doing research to quantify how disproportionately successful the popular acts are compared to popular tracks / statistical averages.

Yeah but even if the most streamed artists release utter rubbish (like Ariana, Justin, or The Weeknd, for example), say them just rambling/muttering, the song will still chart because they have huge streaming numbers. Wheras those who don't have high streaming numbers, or don't release music on streaming platforms at all, are at a huge disadvantage. I don't know, I'm not an expert, but it doesn't seem right a song like 'Positions' (which I personally think is utter rubish!), goes to number 1 purely because the artist gets a lot of streams daily anyway. The charts today just seems to reflect most streamed artists, not the most popular songs. Sounds like interesting research though. Another intereting topic.

Much like in the past, the most popular by sales were in the top end of the chart. Now that hardly any physical (or even digital) sales happen, it's only right the Official chart is measured by the most popular method. Once it was shellac, then vinyl, then CD. Now streaming. What the sound is that achieves those streams depends on appeal and marketing - irrespective of musicianship, or sales method.
Maybe one day streams will be replaced on the chart by holographic concerts or augmented reality experiences. And I'm someone who, for my own consumption, hasn't left the physical era yet, which ended about 15 years ago for chart significance.
