A Welsh language song called ‘Yma O Hyd’ by Daffyd Iwan (from 1983) has reached #1 on the UK iTunes chart.

Does anyone know if a song entirely in Welsh has ever done this before?

Dermot Kennedy's album WITHOUT FEAR, is by far,,,,by so faaaaaar,, better than Number 6 collaborations project (no offense Ed,)

This dude is underrated

Halsey will hopefully flood this chart as from next week,,or the next one....

Hey Guys. Here's a (not so) brief review

Generally, it seems people are still listening to the End of the Year Playlists on various streaming services. Hence, the numerous re-entries. Moving on now.

#5 Yummy - Justin Bieber: This is the one of the worst things I've heard in a while. Like it's so bad that I'll rather have "I love Sausage Rolls" by Ladbaby on repeat than this . I don't know if he was trying to make a song for kids or just wanted a SFW tune. Anyways, this is too crappy for the latter. Cringiest line was "you got that yum yum yum" like are you serious? But of course, it's a top 5 because it's Justin Bieber, not sure this would grow on me at all. Score as at now 3/10. Sorry Bieliebers.

#35 Savage - Mist: First, questions. What is happening to the UK rap scene? Why are the good rap tracks finding it difficult to chart? The answer, we might never know
I really don't have much to say about this. The beat is dope but the content is bland and cliché the only memorable line is "Gangsta in the morning, Gansta in the Evening" which is repeated from the midpoint to the end. Then again, I'm more comfortable playing this than Yummy. 6/10

I was reading the Music Week review on this week's chart and found this comment incredibly relevant:

"Notwithstanding my comment that things are calmer this week, many tracks enjoy renewed impetus, primarily because they outperformed the market last week and come off ACR, which means that their sales-equivalent streams are worth twice what they were. Prime amongst these is Memories by Maroon 5, which was pushed to No.60 a fortnight ago on a combination of ACR and an avalanche of Christmas-related tracks. It recovered to No.21 last week, and now, having emerged from ACR, climbs to No.13, even though its sales last week would have been 26,735 without ACR, and are 3.53% lower this week at 25,790. I’m not sure that this is what ACR is for."

You know it's bad when even Alan Jones of Music Week starts having doubts in the system...

Here's a suggestion for the OCC to stop the controversy. Why not make it ACR & the 3-songs-per-artist rule don't effect the Top 5.

V

Vikingman

2

why the top 5? why not just get rid of the rule completely and adjust the streaming ratios accordingly.

avatar

blobfishy

0

It would be the best scenario, but would require a massive backtracking by the OCC. Like, if they changed back to how it was before 2017 right now, would that make all the charts in the time period with ACR & the 3 songs rule invalid?

Song Of The Week-
JUSTIN BIEBER- "Yummy"
Where to start? So much confusion, so much wasted potential. In 2015 Justin Bieber released his best album to date with "Purpose" and since then has made a variety of appearances, up to his country debut with "10,000 Hours" just last Autumn, so this is a comeback only in name. The lyrics to "Yummy" are awful. The release was quickly followed by widespread criticism from music fans, and for good reason. The atrocious title already means he's fighting an uphill battle, and the lyrics are just a (slightly) more adult version of his original teen pop heartthrob material. At one point he stops to shout out his new clothing line which shows to me just how corporate and safe he's playing it. Also, Justin's YouTube channel features 3 lyric videos, 2 music videos, a fan lip-sync montage, and a reaction compilation. Someone saw Old Town Road's success using similar tactics. I do like the grove though so it "only" gets a 2/10
My Other Remarks On This Week's Chart-
-"Dance Monkey" impressively is #6 despite ACR. Possibly a contender for Song Of The Year?
-"Someone You Loved" returned to the Top 10. Brilliant. This was #1 on my Year-End Worst Hit Songs list that got taken down as spam due to pure overplay. I'm not happy it's back up.
-"Blinding Lights" makes it's Top 10 debut. I don't like it as much as some other people, but I'm glad that it seems to have at least some staying power.
-"The Box" is up to #16 in the UK and #3 in America. It's meh
-ACR continues to lead to some wacky events. "South Of The Border," "Circles" & "Highest In The Room" among the songs to jump up this week.
-Selena Gomez Album quick review: Not my thing but good for what it is 6/10
-Maybe one of the Stormzy diss tracks will make the chart next week
My Crownnote chart is here, updated on Saturday mornings: http://crownnote.com/charts/blobyfish/this-weeks-top-forty-24
Thanks For Reading!

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

Stormzy does the chart double as ‘Own It’ spends a second week at #1 on the singles chart, while ‘Heavy Is The Head’ becomes the brand new #1 album for the week! Only two acts managed this in 2019 (Ariana Grande & Ed Sheeran).

Regarding the rest of the Top 5 on the latter chart, we have: ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (1-2), ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ by Ed Sheeran (4-3), ‘Fine Line’ by Harry Styles (5-4) & ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ by Billie Eilish (6-5).

‘Don’t Start Now’ by Dua Lipa is once again the biggest song on British radio!

On YouTube, ‘Dance Monkey’ returns to the top for a 12th non-consecutive week! However, it did lose 16.6% (about one-sixth) of its views from last week, down to 2.92 million views for the past seven days.

JUSTIN BIEBER - YUMMY (#5)
Let’s be honest, you didn’t come here for a review of this song, you came to see me rant about it! I mean, for as much as I loved his last album, this was getting huge backlash from critics to even diehard to Beliebers, but surely this can’t be that bad? Um... well somehow it is!!! Look, I’m not just disappointed about this one, I’m absolutely fuming! Come on, what’s there even to analyse here?! Let’s just get the obvious major flaws out of the way first, the lyrics are absolutely asinine & childish in a way that makes me think a 25-month-old would write this, let alone a 25-year-old; “Yeah, you got that yummy-yum, that yummy-yum, that yummy-yummy”... who in their right mind thought anyone would find that appealing?! It’s even more embarrassing when you realise that he recently got married to Hailey Baldwin, so this would’ve been an awesome opportunity to dedicate an acoustic ballad like ‘10,000 Hours’ to her, but no, we instead get a song that tries to be $exy & fails in every way possible! I don’t even mind JB going back to his R&B sound like he did on the ‘Believe’ album, but when the falsetto is this grating (despite otherwise decent & smooth vocals on the hook), the concept is ridiculously uninspired & the syncopated, dull backdrop blends in horribly with another messy trap beat probably engineered for TikTok success only, you’re left with what’ll go down as his worst single to date, because for as cringy as ‘Baby’ was, it was at least manufactured for teenage girls back when he was a new heartthrob on the scene, but I don’t see anyone having reason to get behind this! I’ve talked about this song way too long, but JB, if you’re out there reading this man, I’m one of the few 21-year-old guys who adores most of your music (I even saw you live at V Festival in 2016!), but if you plan on making an entire album as disastrous as this song is… it really pains me to say it, but you can count me out as a fan if you DARE let this happen again, just please go back to the songs I loved from ‘Purpose’! As for this, yeah, strong 1/10! Britain, for everyone’s sake, even JB’s for the sake of his career, please can we just let this tank?!

MIST - SAVAGE (#35)
[Takes a deep sigh] Okay, now that I’ve released all my anger out on that song, let’s talk about something that’s hopefully a lot better! Honestly, given what we got, it is, but all we’ve done is substituted an atrocious new entries with a mostly bad one, so that’s hardly an improvement! Again, there was some potential with this given how hard MIST goes in & the drill beat hitting deep, but the incredibly repetitive, autotuned hook & the effects that close out the song kill it for me entirely, along with lyrics all about being a gangsta all day, which is absolutely nothing we haven’t heard here before! Genuinely guys, this is the first week ever where I didn’t actually enjoy putting this review together. I can at least laugh at the song itself or other people’s reactions when I cover terrible songs here, but not either of these two. Solid 3/10 for this one!

Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Come Out Ye Black & Tans’ by The Wolfe Tones, ‘Power Over Me’ by Dermot Kennedy, ‘Life Is Good’ by Future ft Drake, ‘Better Off Without You’ by Becky Hill ft Shift K3Y, ‘You Should Be Sad’ by Halsey, ‘Rare’ by Selena Gomez & maybe even more. Either way, I hope it’s better than the mess we got today!

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

I cannot believe that "Power Over Me" by Dermot Kennedy never appeared in the top 40. I've been hearing it on the radio in Poland for like a year (?). Wasn't it popular in the UK too?

avatar

Piran

2

No, it did chart lower down over here, but never reached the Top 40 as you said. Probably because we've all been supporting 'Outnumbered' so much, haha!

That said, it's suddenly been getting a surge of downloads over here, so I wouldn't rule it out completely just yet.

The thing is, it's been getting decent radio support here too, but airplay doesn't count towards our singles chart...

Own It is still a fake #1, only at the spot because of ACR:

Dance Monkey
#1 Audio Streaming
#1 Sales
#3 Video Streaming

Own It
#2 Audio Streaming
#4 Sales
#5 Video Streaming

I'm going to keep pointing this out every time it happens until they get rid of that rule.

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

From Music Week:
"Dance Monkey falls 5-6 (34,709 sales) for Tones And I but had more paid-for sales (5,631) than any other song, and would still be No.1 with consumption of 63,787 units were it not on ACR."

The difference is less shocking than last week but still there. Stormzy got 55,826 combined sales this week, 8k less than the actual number 1 song.

there is a subject interesting to discuss when it comes to artists who are one hit wonders 1. Estelle American Boy
2.Edward Stereo Love
3 La Roux In the for the kill /Bulletproof
4.Gotye & Kimbra Somebody That I Used to know
5.James Blunt You're Beautiful
6 Vanessa Carlton A Thousand Miles
Do You think these artists will ever have another hits and looking recently artists like
Tones And I & Lil Nas X do you think they will have another hits or it was a chance

Lil Nas X isn't really a one-hit wonder, since 'Panini' was a fairly big hit for him too (even if it's nowhere on the same level as 'Old Town Road' was).

I get a gut feeling that Tones & I will be one unfortunately!

My goodness... this week was terrible! :(

Let's get the brief list of positives out of the way; Stormzy being #1 on both chart is fine, with 'Blinding Lights' going Top 10 for The Weeknd probably being the most enjoyable thing about the week overall.

That said, there are a lot of disappointing re-entries & gains, with even the good ones being extremely overplayed at this point!

Oh yeah, then there's 'Yummy' in the Top 5, but trust me, I'll be tearing into this in full in a few moments.

I'm going to be completely honest - I expected more. When I saw the supposed database error the Official Charts Company had made on the post-Christmas chart, cutting Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas is You' short of nearly 5 million video streams, I thought: "This will surely get fixed within time." Days, weeks passed, nothing. And I admit, maybe it was a bit too naïve of me - a bit too naïve to expect the company, which prides itself in compiling and publishing the only official musical chart of the United Kingdom - as frequently mentioned on the BBC Radio 1 show - to own up to its mistakes and look into correcting them. And correct them, they did not. They waited for it to blow over, and continued business as usual.

This will hardly affect the OCC negatively - they're still technically the official charts, the one artists care about, and the affected artists in this case, Mariah Carey and Ellie Goulding, probably don't even know/care that anything has gone wrong. They've still got the support of everyone in the music industry. Plus, casual radio listeners will still appreciate their favorite songs going to #1, as announced by Radio 1/MTV. Nothing will change here.

That being said, one thing that will change, is my support of these charts. I can't say I've been following them for that long, but in the time I have, it's been greatly entertaining; and for a large portion of that time, I was even fine with their specific rulesets. It was truly fascinating for a chart geek, as these charts moved really quickly, allowing lots of fresh songs to be able to break through properly, while not banishing old ones completely. But these recent happenings have allowed me to take another look at all this - and the official charts should not be all glitz and glam. It's not about which song has the prettiest chart run, or letting a song that would otherwise have no chance of nearing the top 40 get a week or two in the top 30. It's about an accurate representation of the musical landscape. And while throughout most of the year, ACR doesn't largely interfere with that, these past two weeks have shown exactly the opposite, as we've gotten possibly the biggest fantasy charts, labeled as "official" ones.

We have not had the most-consumed track of the week at the top for a third week running now. Let that sink in. What's even worse, is that even with this toxic ruleset, Mariah still should have overcome Ellie in the post-Christmas chart, but did not, due to a 'database error' that the OCC still have not come around to fixing. A fellow commenter on here, Andrew, spent a good amount of time trying to convince me that the charts are rigged, and I refused to believe it. But at this point, with all the sufficient evidence presented and no response, there is absolutely nothing else left for me to believe. Who would have had the motivation to stop Mariah Carey from going #1, or to get Ellie Goulding to that same spot, I don't know. And I don't really care anymore. All I know is that something dodgy is going on, but more importantly, these charts are not trustworthy anymore.

I will be leaving this community, as I cannot continue to follow a chart that is obviously inauthentic. Before I go, I'd like to mention some of the great people I've met on here: Piran, your reviews are amazing, even if they cover a pretty dodgy chart; coolocelot101, I wish you only the best and sincerely hope your mental health improves; gameskiller, we haven't spoken as much on here, but I will continue to look at your personal charts, they're great; Andrew, it's been great discussing this with you and you've really helped me realize how bad the issue is; and anyone else who I didn't mention, you've all been great. (I will still hang around CrownNote to chat with all of you, hopefully I can be more active on there now!)

So that's about it. Back in 2017, when the Sheeran takeover happened, lots of people rushed to declare the death of the charts. I can see why, though I'd disagree, since the data for all of his songs making the top 20 was, in fact, there, and not manipulated. Now that the latter has changed, I can't say that the charts are dead, because technically they're not. But they're meaningless to me now. So they're dead to me personally - your own mileage may vary. And honestly, I'm not mad. I'm just really disappointed.

avatar

akyovbashiev

4

As a post-addendum, I wanted to mention that this whole issue with Mariah Carey's miscounted streams stems from the video streaming chart, and there is something seriously wrong with it. Even without random cover acts getting the video streams of their original songs, the data presented differs vastly from the charts YouTube themselves present every week, publicly as well! Last week, D-Block Europe's 'No Cellular Site' and J Hus' 'No Denying' were 10 and 15 respectively on the YouTube chart, and… nowhere to be seen in the top 100. Videos are, I can only assume, not being tracked for these songs, certainly for even more than those two, which obviously affects their chart positions (by my rough calculations, DBE would have been 22 with added video streams last week, and J Hus would've been around 25-26).

Interestingly enough, Mariah Carey is 47 on that same YT chart, but not on the video one; meanwhile, Wham! are at 72 on the OCC video chart, without being top 100 on the YouTube chart. Which means the miscounted streams issue was not fixed on last week's chart, continues on this week, and there's a great chance it could persist again on the Christmas charts this year. In any case, there's something wrong either with the OCC's video streaming chart, or the YouTube chart; and honestly, given the OCC's recent track record, I have little reason to believe that it's YouTube's fault.

avatar

Piran

1

Thanks for your kind remarks mate, but yeah, I completely respect your decision! OCC did let us down massively a couple of weeks back & I'm only staying here for the sake of music reviews rather than the actual chart itself for the most part.

Hopefully you'll still stay around on Crown Note though!

avatar

akyovbashiev

1

No problem! It really does , but I don't feel good continuing to support a chart that is clearly fictional.
And yeah, no worries, I'll still be around CrownNote!

avatar

Piran

2

Yeah, this is certainly not an "official" chart anymore! Heck, it's not even a "singles" chart if album tracks can enter.

It's just a chart & one that's really sad to lose credibility given all the fun I've had tracking it every week for like a decade now!

I'm happy we'll still keep in contact though! :)

avatar

akyovbashiev

1

For the most part, album tracks charting is fine with me (if album tracks weren't allowed to chart, 'Location' wouldn't have been able to have the insane chart run it's had and would've look really weird at 13 on the EOY chart); but once you take a closer look at it, you start seeing all the oddities: 'hot girl bummer' wasn't reset this week, one of the 7 tracks in this chart still on ACR, and that's... abysmal. Why everything else was and it wasn't, is down to their rules, but blackbear's song is still huge, it's definitely not #55. Same with Lizzo, Kygo/Whitney, but most importantly Tones & I.

I've had a great deal of fun following it too, and it's incredibly sad to see it in this light. We've come to the point where tracks are going to number one only because the most-consumed song of the week is a bit too old and is getting hit with arbitrary rules. And don't get me wrong, I love 'Own It', but it's not a #1. Just like 'River', ironically.

Yeah, I'll be checking out your chart a bit later tonight, and I'll probably have mine up around the same time! :)

Hey Come back!! Please. Honestly, I really agree with you but I'm gonna miss your long reviews but I'm considering that you stay just for the music and point out fake number 1s. It won't be so bad. Please don't go.

Yeah, apparently, songs only get taken off ACR if they gain at least 25% in overall performance during a tracking week.

This is the thing, the OCC have created so many rules that the charts no longer mean that they're representing the most popular songs in the country!

So... what do they mean now? :/

It used to be 50% for a reset but they changed it last summer - what bothers me a lot about this rule, though, is that the song gets taken off ACR the week after the reset, not the week of the reset. Resulting in very unusual spikes, and possibly a much lower peak.

At this point, there's so many rules that it's hard to keep track of the chart without being aware of them. This week's chart is the biggest example - all these songs spiking a lot either upwards or downwards, seems so confusing, especially when you look at Spotify/Apple numbers and they're mostly the same as last week.

The things is, ACR itself as a concept isn't all that bad. I find it a bit better than the recurrency rules Billboard has, which just throws songs off completely (I recall starting to follow the Billboard charts and being very confused as to how these songs with 52-week chart runs suddenly disappear after falling off the top 25/50; although I do have to mention the recurrency rules are at least properly applied, and don't interfere with the #1). But it's all these additional things and the horrible application of it that makes it so bad - most importantly, the #1 most-consumed track of the week should always be #1, no matter if it's on ACR/3 years old or not.

Because, if we don't have the most popular song in the country at #1, the charts truly begin to mean nothing.

Honestly, declaring that I'm going to leave might have been a bit of an emotional reaction to my gross disappointment with the charts - I might still stick around and do my reviews, considering the quality of the songs hardly has anything to do with the charts themselves.

This is a great community that I'd miss if I were to leave - and thank you so much for appreciating my reviews! So I think I'll stick around anyway, plus, there needs to be someone pointing out the ridiculousness of this chart when the rules get in the way of it.
