Just so you know 'Can't Stop' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is the most popular rock song this week.

It was last week, the week before that and number 2 the week before, when 'Iris' by the Goo Goo Dolls was number 1

"I wish there were more songs of the genre I like in the chart. Everything else is irrelevant until that happens"

I really don't want to see anymore hip-hop/trap songs ruling the charts, they keep getting the majority of the streams and never give any other genre of music a chance to dominate.

Anyone miss some pure pop songs in the chart?Songs with upbeat catchy hooks. A song like this:

Pre streaming and pre downloads we had loads of pop music like that in the chart. Upbeat pop music. ☺ We all have different music tastes but it would be nice to have some pure pop songs back in the chart.

No matter how bad the singles chart... we'll always have John and Olivia smiling at us! That makes it all worthwhile.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘God’s Plan’ by Drake is #1 on the singles chart for a third consecutive week. It was streamed 7.1 million times in the past seven days.

- That said, ‘These Days’ by Rudimental ft Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen was a very close contender, as it leaps 11-2 & finishes as the best-selling song of the week by a fairly big margin. If it does hit #1 eventually, Jess Glynne will pass Cheryl as the British female artist with the most #1 singles.

- ‘Finesse’ by Bruno Mars ft Cardi B remains at #1 on the airplay chart for a third consecutive week.

- The biggest debut of the week is ‘Pray For Me’ by The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar at #15, which is taken from the ‘Black Panther’ soundtrack, where all of the tracks on it were produced by Kendrick. The film itself will be released in the UK on Monday. So far, this is the song that has got the most buzz from it & I can see why! I think the dark, noisy beat gives an addictive bounce to the production, which is drenched in The Weeknd’s effervescent vocals & Kendrick’s verse comes in vicious as usual, then the swelling synth pads seep over into the chorus. ‘All The Stars’ took a few listens to grow on me, but I liked this one from first listen & I have a good feeling that the rest of the soundtrack is going to go down well with many people!

- ‘Jumanji’ gives B Young his first Top 40 snog, as it soars 43-27 on the new chart. Now considering I couldn’t find a Wikipedia page about him, nor anything about his discography, I had no idea of what to expect from him. What we got is mostly generic & forgettable grime that I stopped caring about after a minute in. The thing is, there was potential here, with the guitar plucking opening the song & the gentle tropical beat set a pleasant tone for the song, but the production doesn’t change hardly at all after that. Unfortunately, the bigger problem is B Young himself. I’m sorry but his whiny upper register sounds terrible & lyrically, he appears to be comparing his interest with this girl to his interest with cars, along with liking that this girl takes her clothes off for him & like ‘Hey Porsche’ by Nelly, some of the lines here make me cringe, but at least Nelly brought some energy to his flow. I’m not seeing the appeal at all here, yet there seems to be big traction behind this right now… ugh, not impressed.

- ‘Check’ by Kojo Funds ft RAYE make its Official Chart debut at #33, giving Kojo Funds his second Top 40 appearance & RAYE’s third. These are two relatively new artists to the charts who I think are going to have a successful 2018 ahead of them & if this song is anything to go by, I won’t mind that at all. The hook is okay, but there are way too many repeated & forced rhymes to really win me over there & even though it’s overused at the moment, I do enjoy the blend of club tropes & afrobeat here, but it’s not like Kojo Funds sounds interesting. I actually RAYE stands out more here, as her softly soulful vocals remind me of Anne-Marie’s voice if anyone here & that vocal style takes the pressure down a touch. If there’s one production feature I thought was cool, it was the cheeky sampling of ‘7 Days’ by Craig David. Overall, I wouldn’t say I love this, but it’s one of the more likeable hits in the chart from this genre right now. Check it out if you’re curious, it’s not bad.

- The last of the four new arrivals this week is ‘Let Me Go’ by Hailee Steinfeld & Alesso ft Florida Georgia Line & Watt, climbing 42-39 on its 16th week on the chart. This is a song that I’ve been expecting to break into the Top 40 for a couple of months now, but it’s been stuck into the 40s recently, but this was the week where it finally got there… & this is without question the best thing about the chart today for me! What amazes me about this song about this song is that it features artists who work across a variety of genres: Hailee Steinfeld in pop, Alesso in dance, Florida Georgia Line in country & Watt in rock, however this is mostly a dance song & it comes together really well. Hailee sounds flawless across her entire range, she has good chemistry & harmony with Florida Georgia Line & the chorus is full of emotion & power. They could’ve made the drop a bit less basic & the end of the song does get repetitive, but another thing I absolutely adore about this song is the lyrics; Hailee makes it clear that this relationship she’s having with this guy isn’t working out & she sets it up to be your typical break-up song, only to say in the hook that she wishes that he’s loved more by another girl than Hailee herself, so she clearly still cares about this guy. So yeah, this is easily one of my favourite songs of the past few months, not just those in the charts! Greg James said on his show that he expects this to keep rising, so let’s all make that happen!

- On the albums chart, the soundtrack to ‘The Greatest Showman’ is #1 for a fifth week in a row. The soundtrack finishes just over double the sales of its nearest competitor & in total, it has earned $295 million at the box office so far.

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Man Of The Woods’ by Justin Timberlake (debuts at #2), ‘÷’ by Ed Sheeran (stationary at #3), ‘Walk Between Worlds’ by Simple Minds & ‘Technology’ by Don Broco. I think ‘÷’ has a chance of returning to #1 in the week after the BRIT Awards later this month.

- Elsewhere, I love seeing 'Feel It Still' enter the Top 10 & 'Never Be The Same' re-enter the region.

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Wild Love’ by James Bay, ‘Friends’ by Marshmello & Anne-Marie, ‘You Are The Reason’ by Calum Scott, 'Leave A Light On' by Tom Walker, 'The Middle' by Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey, 'Mine' by Bazzi & possibly even more.
