Nice to see all these independent labels are growing. All these independent labels can't benefit from any economies of scale compared to all these other major labels and A-list artists that don't even write their own music. Grime is prevailing with its unique sound collaborated with the raw lyrics that portray the true character of every Grime artist. These independent artists will have their day soon, just need to ensure they pursue to always put the fans first whilst remaining true to themselves. BBK

I dunno if this site approves of Youtube links to songs but one aspect I miss with streaming/digital sales is the lack of any rock songs. For example, this track

Cheap Trick - When I Wake Up Tomorrow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjiy_RL7uhk

is rather good and it would be nice to see such a track high up the chart. It's a recent release. In an ideal world the streaming chart would have more types of music. I don't mean old stuff 're-streamed' to generate some engineered interest (like the death of David Bowie or some song featured on a tv advert!) but new music from rock groups, more indie sounding bands would be nice too. Coldplay is all we seem to get. Back in the old days there were bands like Keane, Travis, Oasis, Blur, The Charlatans, Verve etc. I think new bands in that music style will struggle in the streaming era.

Uptown Funk is at 100. 72 weeks in the chart. Might disappear next week!

At least that Disturbed song didn't chart. With the exception of Middle all new entries in top 40 I've heard are terrible.

Wow, two weeks at number 1 and no video? Can't remember the last time that's happened.

Paul H, all your points are valid but streaming is here to stay.

I'm not sure what's happened to the physical chart this week with all the new entries. It looks as if some very rich person has bought lots of 80s/70s tracks! Very strange. I don't think the physical chart has any real meaning anymore. With regret, I feel it should be scrapped.

I think the Official Chart Top 40 should be renamed

The UK's Official Streaming Top 40

It would still incorporate digital sales but no physical sales. Digital sales may disappear within the next five to ten years or just be a tiny percentage of the streaming chart. We can't live in the past. As I mentioned, the new format streaming chart is here to stay and it's going to have less movement than the old pre-internet chart era. If chart fans accept that then I feel it's for the best if the OCC Top 40 is rebranded. Scrap physical chart and digital download charts. I'd simplify the charts. Have the top 40 and top 75 streaming chart only. Not sure you need a top 100 as songs ranked between 76 - 100 have tiny stream hits or purchase sales.

If "One Dance" doesn't get a third week at number 1, hoping either Little Mix or P!nk top the chart next week!

Both "Hair" and "Just Like Fire" are good songs but with the way things are going it'll probably be between "Purple Rain", "One Dance" or "Cheap Thrills" for No.1 next week.

Ugh no. I dunno what I want to take 1D (har-har) off the spot but not those two artists, their songs have literally like no chance anyway.

Almost 5 months this year and no female artists have topped the charts, so I'd be almost happy if Little Mix or P!nk topped the chart.

D

Diego

Yeah, in the last month's justin beiber , Shawn Mendes, Zayn , Lukas Graham, Mike posner and drake's songs are the only songs that have been no.1 ......

You never no though, cheap thrills might be no.1, or Megan Trainer.

Piran

Well actually Kyla has reached No.1 (if you count her as a featured artist on Drake's "One Dance") but no females have as a lead artist in 2016. It looks like Sia is the most likely contender to put women back on top but it would be good to see Little Mix or P!NK get there too. :)

Including streaming in the charts has ruined them. They are so stagnant and dull and nothing remotely different stands a chance of getting in the top 40 now as streaming is bloating the figures so much . You barely see any new entries and songs hang around for years. including streaming is like including Radio play. It just leads to bland safe commercial songs dominating the charts and nothing else stands a chance of getting in. The charts were never meant to be a measure of what people were listening to. They were about what people were buying. There is a huge difference! People listen to what is familiar and popular and that inevitably leads to a very stagnant commercial biased chart. There are so many songs that are getting in the top 40 on sales chart now which aren't even getting in top 100 of official chart. That's just ridiculous. Smaller up and coming acts with a strong fan base used to be able to break the charts but now they have little chance. The charts have been ruined.

"The charts were never meant to be a measure of what people were listening to. They were about what people were buying."

the point of an overall chart is to measure overall popularity. somewhat unrelated; I can understand not counting radio; radio takes forever to change their playlists. on topic: they are the official charts, not the official sales charts.

"People listen to what is familiar and popular and that inevitably leads to a very stagnant commercial biased chart. There are so many songs that are getting in the top 40 on sales chart now which aren't even getting in top 100 of official chart."

then blame the british music community for not streaming, lmao. basing an overall chart solely on sales makes the chart look artificially active and easily manipulated. it would make the #1 spot look like a joke. it would make the whole chart look like the joke.

"Smaller up and coming acts with a strong fan base used to be able to break the charts but now they have little chance."

then there's something wrong with the british music community per se. up-and-coming acts sometimes have their breakthroughs here in the USA, as evident in our charts. (Desiigner, Alessia Cara, the Weeknd, Fetty Wap to name a few)

streaming hasn't reallykilled the charts; the british GP refusing to stream (or refusing to buy) has killed the charts. quick question, how long have you been on this earth?

I've already explained time and time again how the charts are not "ruined" and why streaming is not going away from the charts. I see this comment every week and it has to end. Do you really think you complaining in the comments is going to make streams go away? No! I'm not going to explain why streaming isn't going away as I've already done that many, many times. Go check the previous week's comments and find my comment.

Sorry , but who are you? Do
you own the comments section of this website? Do you have the authority to tell
me to stop commenting? Of course I understand that streaming isn't going away
but my point is still a valid one; including streaming with the weighting it
currently has is leading to a stagnant and dull chart. Just compare the number
of new entries now to those of the chart prior to the inclusion of streaming. Just
look at how long songs are hanging around in the charts now. It’s boring! It
doesn't take a genius to understand why. Since the inclusion of streaming
virtually no smaller acts with growing fan bases ever manage to break the
charts like they used to do. As a result the charts no longer reflect what is
happening in the music scene. Very few of the big live acts ever break the
charts now. This is what used to make the charts varied and exciting. This is
because including streaming just serves to inflate the chart position of what
is already known, and popular, and played on the radio. It leads to a samey,
bland, mainstream, pop dominated chart. Ok, the chart has always been dominated by pop
( I don’t have an issue with this. I love pop, but I also like lots of other
genres of music) but now it is total ! Ok, if you want a chart that reflects what people
are listening to then, yes, it reflect that to some extent but the official
chart has never been just about that. The whole history of the official chart
is about measuring sales and the commitment that fans make to a song/band when
they purchase their track, not when they just click on a link or press replay
on Spotify which takes virtually no commitment! Including streaming in the official charts is
like including how many times someone listened to a cd back in the olden days!
It does not relate to the commitment someone shows when they purchase a track.
All it shows is what is being listened to and the more popular a track is then
the more it will be listened too and the more times it will be listened to by
an individual. As a result, you just get a chart that reflects what is
established and played on the radio. If streaming has to be included, then it
should just be one stream per person and once an individual has streamed a
track once then that should be it for the week. Counting multiple streams is
meaningless unless we have completely redefined what the chart is meant to be
showing.

It's an annual event where artists recognise the efforts of independent record stores, Some acts have special releases that are only available on CD or vinyl formats.

RIHANNA HAS FOUR SONGS ON THE CHART! Work, Famous, Kiss It Better & Needed Me. She quite possibly can be one of the biggest- if not the biggest- singles artist for 2016 across the globe. Just need Kiss It Better and Needed Me to rise and keep selling. When Love On The Brain is released- BOOM- #1.

Big congratulations to Drake for making it two weeks at No.1 with "One Dance" (one of my favourite songs from him so far). 5 new entries and 1 re-entry in the Top 40 and most of them I love! My thoughts are with the family and friends of the truly, legendary 80s and 90s icon that was Prince. I think we will see a LOT of re-appearances in both the singles and albums charts from him next week. RIP Prince.

I'd love to see a Singles chart invasion but singles chart entries will surely be limited and not on the scale of Bowie as the material just isn't available on Spotify. When streaming accounts for 50% of 'sales' its not going to happen on the same scale :(

Piran

Prince is going to do well on sales and downloads but streaming will be a disadvantage like you said. That's the only thing I regret about streaming on the charts; that most artists who peaked before the 21st century don't have the music on the streaming services and hence it's harder for them to get on the charts. That said "One Dance" made it to No.1 with few streams so hopefully something like "Purple Rain" will sell enough to overcome the streaming disadvantage.
