How is Riptide here? That song didn't chart at all in 2021. It hasn't charted since 2015.

its on permanent ACR so its streams are halved, otherwise it would've spent most of the year just inside the top 100. idk how it made it here but ig it had longevity and is iconic

Its interesting to see the interchangeable use of terms at times for Biggest Song (Streaming, Download and Physical), referred to here as Biggest Single. In the earlier News announcement they also note Most Streams and Best Selling (being Downloads, Physical & sausage-roll shaped sales).

The change towards 83.1% music consumption by streaming leads to some real chart throwbacks like Mr Brightside, the Shooting Guns and the Dancing Monkeys not going away (not discontinued or unavailable for purchase like the old 7" vinyl). The Baby Sharks are always lurking in the depths of the charts, or should I say the Shallows. Even though they do not really break through the 'bubbling under' category, it does add up to a lot over a year. I am wondering whether this also ignores ACR in some way, or whether newer long running songs are actually still penalised, but the perennial Christmas cheese just blasts through the older-track multiplier effect based on volume of streams alone for one month.

I hate ACR (like most of you in this chat room) when it prematurely curtails a good chart run. But some of these aforementioned tracks seem to be bomb proof when it comes to the year-end chart and are likely to reoccur every year. It does leave us older 'Pop Masters' yearning for the simpler times: when the Year-End chart (which was never been perfect by the way due to historical timing issues) generally reflected the hottest tracks of the times. If I had to now compile a list of the biggest hits of 2021 (Channel 5 series style) it would be polluted with a long list of old songs, with many of these charts (in 2022, 2023, plus) starting to repeat themselves.

I guess, just like ACR, its called progress... (Oh, I was being sarcastic).

I don't quite know how Someone Like You made it to 81 with a 2021 peak of 34 and a 6 week chart run. Is this right?
Obsessed By You had 9 weeks in the Top 10, peaking a #4 x2 weeks, and a 15 week chart run over most of the same weeks, through to the end of the year. It only made 87.
I do hope the OCC have got the latest version of Excel for their sales calculations, as it looks a bit fishy.

ACR doesn't count towards the end of year chart, so someone you loved would've peaked probably just outside the top 20 and got significantly more weeks

Adele’s old tracks will have streamed for a full 52 weeks, perhaps outside the Top 100 for 46 weeks… Same with the old Fleetwood Mac tracks that get repeat streaming.

But it’s still surprising that a new Top 4 hit with 9 weeks in the Top 10 could not beat it. It does suggest that the weekly chart is generally a lot less significant than it used to be.

'Easy On Me' almost made the Top 10 despite being so late into the year, she did sell amazing though so I'm not as surprised.

I think 'Easy On Me' could've made the Top 10 if the year was a couple of weeks longer! :P

Is this really 'Merry Christmas Everyone's 1st YE list? Glad 'Fairytale Of New York' made this list and good job Wham! and Mariah for making the Top 40 even with them being Christmas songs!

avatar

Piran

9

Disappointed that 'By Your Side' is so low here! I was expecting it to be a lot bigger. :/

avatar

Piran

'Levitating' did remarkably well here when you consider that it only peaked at #5 in the weekly charts!

It absolutely deserved the success it got though. :)

'Wellerman' as the biggest EDM hit of last year! 😍

imo it should have been bed but I have a huge bias to it so 😩

I wouldn’t have minded that either, haha. :)

So this is apparently the highest 'Mr Brightside' has ever appeared in a Chart Of The Year even though it was released in the early 2000's & isn't a Christmas song! 😂
