TOTAL SCORE: 658/1000 (65.8%)

This was a much better year for hit music than 2016 in my opinion!

There were still a lot of bad songs to hit the charts this year (I was particularly disappointed with the hip-hop/rap in general), but the better songs made up for it! 'It Ain't Me' & 'Castle On The Hill' are among my favourite songs of the decade!

While I thought '÷' was a decent album, I can understand why many people got tired of his chart takeover last year, particularly the one where all 16 tracks from the album hit the Top 20 almost entirely due to streaming.

Hopefully we'll see even more new artists in the Chart Of The Year for 2018, but going by my score, while 2017 was far from the best year of the decade for music, I thought it was fine in general.

Terrible ranking, Man's Not Hot is too low.

wow, great work mate! how is 'perfect' doing over there? is it a big single like over here?

Thanks Sunshine Gal! :)
Yeah, 'Perfect' was massive here; it's currently spending its fifth week at #1 & it's predicted to get a sixth on Friday, just like on the Hot 100.
'Perfect' also charted back when it was an unreleased album track on '÷' & got a lot of staying power before the OCC changed their rules, so with the help of the versions with Andrea Bocelli & Beyoncé. it ended up becoming the sixth biggest song of 2017 & it should rank high in the 2018 Chart Of The Year too!

any mentions over there that 'thinking out loud' reached diamond status here? it's too bad that hadn't happened to our 1D mates though :(

Come on, I still gave it an 8/10, it's a really good song!
If it make the Chart Of The Year for the US, it probably would've been in the Top 20 of my ranking.

I haven't seen anything on OCC saying that 'Thinking Out Loud' reached Diamond in the US, but that's because I'm more Billboard more these days.
I think it will happen to our 1D mates only if they get back together, but I'm not disappointed that they were never able to get a Hot 100 #1 as a group, considering they had some really strong debuts with their singles!

Haha, we're all good then! ;)
So do you prefer the UK Chart Of The Year to the US one?

avatar

ProPanda

1

US one, only because I felt it was a bigger representation of the pop landscape in both charts tbh

2

Canada had a really good one tbh

I remember seeing that on YouTube & theirs seemed really good!
Australia's was okay, but the German one was definitely my favourite. :)
