The Bruno Mars-assisted track racked up a huge chart tally of 118,000 following its early release on Monday evening, comprising of 105,000 downloads and 1.35 million streams.

The feat bests his previous peak of Number 2 with singles Stop Me and Amy Winehouse collaboration Valerie, both of which were released in 2007.

Mark told OfficialCharts.com: "This is my first Number 1 single as an artist or producer so I just want to thank everyone who bought, downloaded or DJ'd 'Uptown Funk' this past week.

"It's pretty much the coolest thing ever. I also have to thank Phil Smeeze, Jeff Bhasker and the boy wonder Bruno Mars without whom there'd be no jam."

Uptown Funk’s impressive sales now puts it firmly in the running to take on this week’s Official Christmas Number 1 race, where it will where it will fight it out for the accolade with the likes of Band Aid 30, Iron Maiden and this year’s X Factor winner.
