In a new video interview with theofficialcharts.com, lead singer of The Military Wives (bookies’ favourite for the Official Christmas Number 1) Sam Stevenson, reveals her heavy rock roots and what it would mean to raise funds for the Royal British Legion and SSAFA while keeping Simon Cowell and The X Factor from the top festive spot.

With just two weeks to go until the ultimate winner of the 2011 Official Christmas Number 1 race is revealed, the competition is well and truly hotting up. X Factor winners Little Mix are likely to be a strong contender, as evidenced in previous years’ results, and a Facebook campaign backing the Nirvana classic 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' for the Official Christmas Number 1 has been given a boost by the band’s record company, Universal, who are set to reissue the classic track on 7” vinyl.

However, it is an unlikely group of women who are bookies’ favourites to claim the coveted Christmas Number 1 title. The Military Wives, the choir assembled by Gareth Malone for a recent BBC2 documentary, are due to release original single 'Wherever You Are' on Monday December 19, to raise money for the Royal British Legion and Soldiers’ And Sailors’ Forces Help. The song, written by Paul Mealor, contains moving lyrics based around love letters written by the wives to their loved ones who have been serving in Afghanistan.

Media interest is gathering real momentum with the support of celebrity backers to the campaign including Radio 2’s Chris Evans. Pre-orders for the singles are reportedly now significant and, as such, the 'Wherever You Are' single represents an increasingly real contender for the top festive spot.
