Usually, if a songwriter has a decent voice, or at least some stage presence, they'll sing their own songs. If not, the tunes get passed on to popstars with better sets of pipes.

But not all popstars hang on to their own songs – sometimes they'll hand them on to their pop colleagues, or want to work with someone in particular but not hog the limelight. For some, songwriting is their first step to becoming a popstar.
