Paul Weller gets his kicks with fourth Official Number 1 album
Paul Weller swaggers all the way into the Number 1 slot on the Official Albums Chart today with new acclaimed album Sonik Kicks. The follow up to 2010’s Number 2 album Wake Up The Nation is Weller’s eleventh studio album and a more experimental, psychedelic, offering according to the critics.
Sonik Kicks debuts at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart today, giving the Modfather his fourth solo Number 1 album, and in doing so manages to keep David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat away from the top spot by a narrow margin of 250 copies after the French global DJ and producer shot up seven places this week.
Last week’s Number 1, Military Wives’ In My Dreams slips to Number 3, while Emeli Sande’s Our Version Of Events is down from Number 2 to Number 4.
Completing this week’s Top 5 is Adele's 21. In another extraordinary record-breaking week for the London-born singer, the Official Charts Company can confirm that 21 is now the sixth biggest selling album of all time in the UK. On Monday it was revealed that Adele’s 21 has now overtaken Pink Floyd’s 1973 epic, The Dark Side Of The Moon, having already overtaken Michael Jackson’s Bad three weeks previously. By the end of the working week, Adele had also leap-frogged Dire Straits’ 1985 hit Brothers In Arms. 21 has now sold over 4.16m copies in the UK.
New entries
The Shins are the second highest new entry this week (11) with their major label debut Port Of Morrow featuring the single Simple Song, while Miike Snow returns to the Official Albums Chart with new release Happy To You (31), and Odd Future’s The OF Tape – Vol 2 completes today’s Top 40 new entries.
