One Direction have beaten the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Spice Girls, Coldplay, Radiohead and Queen by becoming the first British group to debut at Number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with their first album.

The former X Factor contestants - whose first full length, Up All Night, only reached Number 2 in the Official Albums Chart when it was released in the UK back in November - made US chart history this morning (Wednesday, March 21) when Up All Night knocked Bruce Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball off the US top spot.

Up All Night shifted over 176,000 copies in its first week on sale according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"We simply cannot believe that we are number one in America!,” said One Direction’s Harry Styles. “We want to thank each and every one of our fans in the US who bought our album and we would also like to thank the American public for being so supportive of us."

"I couldn't be happier for One Direction,” added X Factor judge Simon Cowell, who signed the band to his Syco record label. “It is an incredible achievement. They deserve it. They have the best fans in the world.”
