Missy Elliott’s career will be celebrated this month as she’s been announced as the recipient of MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award – a prize handed out to music legends in recognition of their accomplishments in music and film.
“Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” said Bruce Gilmmer, MTV International co-brand head. Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched."
He’s not wrong. From the moment she emerged in 1997 with her debut single The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), she set a high standard for female hip-hop artists and raised the bar when it comes to creative visuals, forging longtime partnerships with directors Hype Williams and Dave Meyers - as well as bringing shoulder-popping to the masses.
Missy is also a five-time Grammy Award winner and was the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame earlier this year. Her global record sales reportedly exceed 30 million, including over five million in the UK, according to Official Charts Company data. View Missy Elliott's Official UK Chart history in full.
Her biggest single in the UK is 2001’s Get Ur Freak On, a Number 4 hit on the Official Singles Chart in 2001, with 513,000 chart sales. The track featured on her Miss E… So Addictive Album, which was co-produced by longtime collaborator Timbaland and ranks as her biggest album overall with 314,500 chart sales. Another single from the album, Top 10 hit One Minute Man, places tenth.
Missy’s second biggest track is her guest feature on Ciara’s single 1 2 Step, a Number 3 hit in 2005 with 408,000 chart sales. It's also her most viewed video in the UK since we starting tracking video plays one year ago, with 1.75 million views. Missy is a prolific collaborator, regularly teaming up with producers including Timbaland and Pharrell, pop stars such as Christina Aguilera, Pussycat Dolls and Little Mix, and rappers including Dr Dre, A$AP Ferg and J Cole.
Missy’s only UK Number 1 single, Mel B collaboration I Want You Back, places fifth. Despite being the guest star, Mel B says it was Missy who approached her about the song, which she had produced and co-written.
The most recent entry in Missy’s all-time Top 20 is Ariana Grande collaboration Borderline, taken from Ariana’s 2018 Sweetener album, while other notable hits include Christina Aguilera duet Car Wash at Number 8 – a Top 5 hit in 2004 – and her most recent headline single, WTF ft. Pharrell, at Number 14.
