Irish singer Val Doonican dies aged 88

The singer and TV entertainer once knocked The Beatles' Sgt Peppers off the top of the charts.

Val Doonican has died at the age of 88.

The singer and TV entertainer is reported by The BBC to have died "peacefully" on Wednesday night (July 1). 

Between 1965 and 1986 the entertainer hosted The Val Doonican Show on the BBC, which included guest performances as well as his own. 

Doonican was a regular fixed in the Official Singles and Albums Charts in the '60s and '70s, even knocking The Beatles' SGT Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band record off the top spot in 1967. 

Throughout his music career, he scored 12 Top 40 albums (including five Top 10s) and 5 Top 10 singles.
