Ireland's Official Top 50 biggest albums of 2021 so far

Olivia Rodrigo, Justin Bieber and The Weeknd have the biggest albums so far released in 2021.

A healthy release slate featuring big breakthroughs and records from music legends is seeing consumption of recorded music in Ireland grow year-on-year, the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) can confirm today.

New data from the Official Charts Company and IRMA illustrates the vibrancy within the Irish music market, powered by strong streaming and vinyl growth, thanks to big releases from artists including Olivia Rodrigo, Ed Sheeran, plus homegrown acts Dermot Kennedy and Picture This.

Ireland’s albums sector is currently up 11% on 2020, including impressive year-on-year growth of vinyl album sales, which have more than doubled (57%) compared to 2020. Just under 250,000 records have been purchased on vinyl in Ireland this year – the top seller is Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 classic Rumours.

What’s more, a busy Q4 release schedule - including new albums from Ed Sheeran, ABBA, Westlife, Coldplay and Adele - is likely to propel this growth even further by the end of 2021.

This year’s breakout star Olivia Rodrigo charges ahead as her debut album Sour claims Ireland’s Official biggest album of 2021.

The US singer-songwriter has enjoyed an incredible run at the top of the Official Irish Charts, with Sour logging a mighty 12 weeks (and counting) at the summit - the most weeks at Number 1 for a female artist album in five years, since Adele’s 25 notched up 15 non-consecutive weeks on top across 2015 and 2016.

In second place, and Ireland’s biggest homegrown artist album of the year to date, is Dermot Kennedy’s seemingly unstoppable 2019 debut Without Fear – the most purchased album on physical formats so far this year. His self-titled compilation, also released in 2019, is at 22.

Dua Lipa’s 2020 album Future Nostalgia ranks third and continues to perform well into 2021 thanks to a new Moonlight Edition released earlier this year, while the ever-popular Fleetwood Mac are at 4 with retrospective 50 Years – Don’t Stop.

More greatest hits albums dominate the rest of the year-to-date Top 10: Queen’s Greatest Hits is at 7, ABBA’s Gold places at 8 - boosted by recent news of their comeback - and Elton John’s Diamonds is at 9.

New albums released this year in the Top 50 countdown including Justin Bieber’s Justice (12), The Weeknd best-of The Highlights (13), Doja Cat’s Planet Her (18), Billie Eilish’s second collection Happier Than Ever (21), and Dave’s acclaimed We’re All Alone In This Together (26).

Elsewhere, more Irish talent features in the YTD chart; including Picture This’ third studio collection Life In Colour at Number 28, Hozier’s self-titled album at Number 34, and U2’s greatest hits U218 Singles at Number 38.
