Nostalgia is a powerful thing; and for fans of Disney’s Mulan, its theme song Reflection by Christina Aguilera is as integral to the film as Mushu or the Matchmaker.

Fast-forward 22 years and Christina has re-recorded the song for the film’s (non-musical) live-action remake, released on Disney+ on September 4. The track served as her debut single in America, released when she was 17 and ultimately secured her a record deal and earnt her instant credibility among established songwriters and producers.

While movie technology has come on leaps and bounds since the 1998 original, Reflection 2020 is nothing but pure and unfiltered Christina power-balladry. Her voice may have matured over the years, but the notes remain as big as her dress in the song’s accompanying music video:

Reflection featured on Christina Aguilera’s self-titled debut album, which featured the Number 1 single Genie In A Bottle and Top 10 hits What A Girl Wants and Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You). View Christina Aguilera’s Official UK Chart history in full here.

This week Christina showcased her (still) incredible vocals with a live performance of the track on Good Morning America, as well as Loyal Brave True, a new song she has recorded for the Mulan soundtrack.

Disney’s Mulan is available exclusively to Disney+ subscribers with Premier Access for £19.99. Don’t have Disney+ yet? You can sign up here. (If you subscribe to a service through our links, Official Charts may earn an affiliate commission.)
