Ariana Grande earns a place in Official Chart history with Problem

Congratulations to Ariana Grande whose new track Problem FT Iggy Azalea, earns its place in British chart history today as the first UK Number 1 single based on sales and streaming.

The 21-year-old US singer/songwriter has not only scored her debut UK chart topper, but she has also become the first act to reign the new look Official Singles Chart which now features audio streaming data from services like Spotify, Deezer, Napster, O2 Tracks, Xbox Music, Sony's Music Unlimited and rara alongside physical and digital sales data.

With 100 streams being equivalent to one single purchase, in the last week Problem has emerged as Britain’s biggest track of the week, powering its way to the summit with a combined ‘chart sales’ figure of 113,000. According to Official Charts Company data, this comprises 106,000 sales and a streaming contribution of 6% to this week’s historic chart topper based on 712,000 audio streams.

"Landing her first Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart is an incredible achievement and another benchmark in the continued global success of Problem,” comments Ariana Grande’s manager, Scooter Braun, the man also responsible for steering the careers of international pop superstars Justin Bieber and PSY. “Thanks to the loyal UK fans whose incredible support has made this possible. This is your Number 1, too."

On average, the streaming contribution to this week’s Top 40 singles sits at just over 20%.

Ella Henderson holds firm at Number 2 today with, Ghost. The track, which is the former X Factor star’s debut single, has been streamed over a million times in the last seven days.

Following his performance at last weekend’s Glastonbury festival, newcomer George Ezra climbs two places to Number 3 with Budapest, while the British public evidently can’t get enough of Ed Sheeran - Sing (Number 4), claims the most streamed track of the week having notched up a cool 1.32 million plays on audio streaming services.  

Ed has achieved exceptional streaming success this week, all 12 tracks from the standard version of his chart-topping second studio album, X, appear on today’s Official Singles Chart Top 100 which will be published exclusively on OfficialCharts.com here from 7pm tonight.

Oliver Heldens and Becky Hill’s former chart-topper, Gecko (Overdrive) (Number 5), complete this week’s Top 5.

New Entries and High Climbers

In addition to Ariana Grande’s Problem FT Iggy Azalea (Number 1), there are four other new entries in today’s UK Top 40.

Sia claims her first Top 10 solo hit in almost 14 years with Chandelier. The Australian singer/songwriterhas co-written hits for the likes of Kylie, Beyonce and Katy Perry, to name but a few, as well as lending her vocals to David Guetta’s million-selling 2012 hit, Titanium.

Meanwhile. DJ Fresh scores his sixth Top 10 hit today with Make U Bounce, which also features TC and Little Nikki, and German folk pop duo Milky Chance climb 15 places to make their Top 40 debut with Stolen Dance (32).

And finally, the album version of The Vamps’ new single, Somebody To You, is up three to 39. The group have today released a re-recorded version of the track featuring Disney princess Demi Lovato, which is expected to be a big new entry on next week’s Official Singles Chart.
