X Factor runners-up One Direction are on course to achieve one of the best opening sales of 2011 with their debut single, according to provisional sales reports gathered by the Official Charts Company.
A glimpse at the latest sales figures for the week to date sees eagerly anticipated debut single, What Makes You Beautiful, blasting ahead in the race for the Official Singles Chart Number One this weekend. With pre-orders for the single reportedly to be the highest witnessed in Sony Music’s history, today’s figures show that Simon Cowell’s X Factor 2010 signings are set to score the fastest-selling single of the year in tomorrow’s Official Chart Update.
If One Direction hit the Number One spot this weekend, it will also mark an unbroken run of form for British acts in the Official Singles Chart, scooping the Number One baton from current chart topper Pixie Lott to become the tenth British act in a row to hit the coveted slot.
With promising early sales figures, the Syco act will also be in the running by the end of the week to join the league of artists including the likes of The Wanted, Bruno Mars and DJ Fresh, to smash 100k sales in the first week of release in 2011.
The provisional reports will be confirmed tomorrow by the Official Chart Update, which is unveiled by Radio One's Greg James at 3.30pm.
