One Direction and Ed Sheeran heading for debut Number Ones

14/09/2011

X Factor finalists One Direction and British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran are on course to score debut Number Ones this weekend in the Official Singles and Albums Chart, respectively, according to today’s Official Chart Update.

What Makes You Beautiful, the eagerly anticipated debut single from Simon Cowell’s X Factor 2010 signings has charged ahead of the pack to rack up 100k sales already this week, outstripping Maroon 5 Ft.Christina Aguilera’s Moves Like Jagger (2) by an astounding three copies to one to become the fastest-selling single of the year. The release has also broken records at Sony Music with pre-orders for the track reported to be the highest in the company’s history.

Last week’s Number One, Pixie Lott, is at Three with All About Tonight, and a fierce battle ensues between Example (4), The Saturdays (5) and Olly Murs Ft. Rizzle Kicks (6), with less than 100 copies separating the three acts in today’s update.

Elsewhere in the Official Singles Update, the second highest new entry inside the Top 20 this week is Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds with AKA What A Life in at 17.

If One Direction hit the Number One spot this weekend, it will also mark an unbroken run of form for British acts in the Official Singles Chart, scooping the Number One baton from current chart topper Pixie Lott to become the tenth British act in a row to hit the coveted slot.

It is a British story at the top of the Official Albums Chart too, with 20 year old Suffolk singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran entering at the summit with the hotly anticipated album, +, featuring hit singles The A Team and You Need Me I Don’t Need You. The 2011 breakthrough artist hailing from Suffolk will be embarking on a string of sold-out UK live shows throughout October.

A new release from previous Mercury Prize nominee Laura Marling this week, her third album A Creature I Don’t Know, is set to make its entry into the Official Albums Chart at Number Two this Sunday, with no signs of Adele’s 21 (3) slipping from the top set any time soon. Example’s Playing In The Shadows (4) and David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat (5) complete this week’s Top Five.

Other high new entries in the Official Albums Update Top 20 this week are The Kooks who make their return with third studio album Junk Of The Heart (7) and A Dramatic Turn Of Events from progressive metallers Dream Theater enters at 10. Maroon 5’s Hands All Over is on course to be this week’s Top 40 highest climber.
