According to today’s Official Update, Maroon 5 look set to debut at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart this Sunday with Payphone.
The track, which also features rapper Wiz Khalifa, has sold nearly 80,000 copies in just three days on sale, and is currently outselling Cheryl‘s Call My Name (Number 2) two to one. If Payphone can maintain its lead going into the weekend, it will give the US rockers their first UK Number 1. Maroon 5’s previous single, Moves Like Jagger FT Christina Aguilera, was the second biggest selling single of 2011. Despite never quite reaching the top spot, the track spent an impressive 16 weeks in the Top 10 last year, including a seven week stand at Number 2, and has sold over 1.2 million copies to date. Maroon 5’s fourth studio album, Overexposed, will be released next week.
Current chart-topper, Cheryl, slips into second place, while Flo Rida is at Number 3 with Whistle. Feisty new British girl band Stooshe are the second highest new entry in today’s Official Singles Chart Update with new single, Black Heart. The Motown-flavoured track, which was co-written by former All Saints star Shaznay Lewis, looks set to debut at Number 4 on Sunday.
This week’s Official Singles Chart Update Top 5 is completed by Coldplay FT Rihanna’s Princess Of China.
In addition to Maroon 5 FT Wiz Khalifa’s Payphone (1) and Stooshe’s Black Heart (4), the only other new entry in today’s Official Singles Chart Update is Birthday by Paul Weller (30). The Mod Father recorded this cover of The Beatles 1968 track in honour of Sir Paul McCartney’s 70th birthday earlier this week.
Katy Perry’s Wide Awake is this week’s highest climber, up 11 places from Number 31 to 20, while Justin Bieber’s Boyfriend re-enters the Top 40, climbing 10 places to Number 32.

Justin Bieber has taken an early lead in the race to Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart, according to the Official Charts Company’s latest sales data.
The Canadian singer’s third studio album, Believe, is currently 3,000 copies ahead of Cheryl’s A Million Lights (Number 2). If Bieber can maintain his lead, not only will he score his first Number 1 album in the UK, he will also deny Girls Aloud singer Cheryl a hat trick of consecutive chart-topping albums (Cheryl’s 2009 debut, 3 Words and her 2010 follow-up, Messy Little Raindrops, both debuted at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart upon their release). However, with Justin’s Beliebers and Cheryl’s Soldiers being two of the most passionate fanbases in pop, this chart battle will undoubtedly be fought tooth and nail, right up until Sunday’s final whistle.
Further down, Paloma Faith’s Fall To Grace is up two places from Number 5 to Number 3, while Amy MacDonald’s Life In A Beautiful Light slips two places to Number 4. Emeli Sande’s Our Version Of Events (5) completes this week’s Official Album Chart Update Top 5.
With Justin Bieber’s Believe and Cheryl’s A Million Lights occupying the top two places, there are four further new entries in today’s Official Album Chart Update.
Former American Idol contestant Carrie Underwood is on course to clock up her debut Top 10 album in the UK. Her latest offering Blown Away looks set to chart at Number 10 on Sunday. Sheffield’s Reverend And The Makers' third album, the Twitter inspired @Reverend_Makers, is at Number 13, while veteran US rockers Smashing Pumpkins are at 14 with Oceania.
And finally, experimental German group Can, who Kasabian site as a major influence, are new in at Number 35 with The Lost Tapes. The album is made up of a collection of songs recorded between 1968 and 1977 which were recently discovered while dismantling Can’s old recording studio.
