Canadian chart throb Justin Bieber takes home his first Official Albums Chart Number 1 with Believe, holding off competition from Cheryl’s A Million Lights.
Justin’s Beliebers and Cheryl’s Soldiers went head to head this week in the battle of pop’s biggest new album releases, with Bieber fans triumphing by just over 3,000 copies, according to Official Charts Company sales figures.
Bieber not only scores his first Number 1 album here in the UK today, he also denies Girls Aloud singer and ex-reality TV judge Cheryl a hat trick of consecutive chart-topping albums. (Cheryl’s 2009 debut 3 Words and her 2010 follow-up, Messy Little Raindrops, both debuted at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart upon their release).
Paloma Faith’s Fall To Grace is up two places to Number 3, followed by Emeli Sande’s Our Version Of Events at 4, while Amy MacDonald’s Life In A Beautiful Light completes this week’s Official Albums Chart Top 5.
With Justin Bieber’s Believe and Cheryl’s A Million Lights leading the week’s new entries up in the Top 10, there are four more new entries in the Top 20.
Blown Away (11) gives former American Idol contestant Carrie Underwood her first Top 40 album in the UK, while Slash FT Myles Kennedy’s Apocalyptic Love re-enters at 12 with its highest chart position to date.
Sheffield’s Reverend And The Makers third album with the Twitter inspired name @Reverend_Makers, ends its opening week at Number 16, while Oceania gives veteran US rockers Smashing Pumpkins their sixth UK Top 20 album.
Today’s highest climber comes courtesy of Drake, whose Take Care (38) album climbs 29 places to re-enter the Top 40 in its 32nd week on chart.

US pop rockers Maroon 5 scoop their first ever UK Number 1 today with Payphone, and make it a third week on the bounce for the Official Singles Chart Number 1 act to break the 100k sales milestone.
In what has been a huge month for chart toppers, Maroon 5 this week help continue the run of form in the UK pop market, racking up an impressive opening week sale for new single Payphone of well over 141,000. That’s only a few hundred copies off the tally managed by Gary Barlow’s Sing following the Diamond Jubilee celebrations a fortnight ago. Cheryl still maintains the record for fastest seller of the year after last week’s Call My Name 152k debut.
Payphone, which also features rapper Wiz Khalifa, has given Maroon 5 their highest chart position here in the UK. Their previous highest charting singles were 2007’s Makes Me Wonder (2) and 2011’s Moves Like Jagger. Moves Like Jagger FT Christina Aguilera was the second biggest selling single of 2011. Despite never quite reaching the top spot, the track spent seven long weeks at Number 2, and has sold over 1.2 million copies to date.
Maroon 5’s fourth studio album, Overexposed, will be released tomorrow.
Cheryl’s Call My Name slips into second place, while Flo Rida lands at Number 3 with Whistle. Colourful new girl band Stooshe are the second highest new entry with Black Heart. The melodic Motown-tinged track, which was co-written by former All Saints star Shaznay Lewis, enters at Number 4 today, giving the girls their second Top 5 single of the year after their debut single Love Me FT Travie McCoy went to Number 5 back in March.
This week’s Official Singles Chart Top 5 is completed by Coldplay FT Rihanna’s Princess Of China.
Katy Perry’s Wide Awake is this week’s highest climber, up 19 places from Number 31 to 12, while Justin Bieber’s Boyfriend re-enters the Top 40, climbing 11 places to Number 31.
