It’s been a seriously close battle between 5 Seconds of Summer and Dua Lipa for this week’s Number 1 album; but it’s the Australian rock band who triumph at the final whistle with their new album Calm.

5SOS’s fourth album claims the top spot on this week’s Official Albums Chart, finishing just 550 units ahead of Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia. It’s the band’s second Number 1 in the UK after 2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good. View 5SOS's complete Official UK Chart history here.

83% of Calm’s Week 1 total came from physical sales, including 12,000 copies on cassette. For Dua, Future Nostalgia performed evenly on physical and streaming formats, each contributing just over 40% to her total. The album does however claim the Number 1 spot on the Official Vinyl Albums Chart, shifting 3,000 copies on wax.

Celebrating the news, 5SOS told Official Charts: "What an astonishing achievement and what a true testament to the most brilliant fan base in the world. A UK Number 1 album.

"To the people that listen to our music, it is so hard to describe the joy and fulfillment that we get from writing music for you to listen to and enjoy as you pass through life. It is a pleasure to be on such an iconic journey with you as we grow up and our music progresses into new areas of imagination. With the state that the world is in at the moment, I hope our record CALM has brought you happiness and is a soundtrack to stimulate escapism from the confines of your bedroom. CALM was created for that exact reason. All our love. Stay well and keep lifting each other up!"

Future Nostalgia – Dua's second collection – takes the runner-up slot and marks a personal best for the singer following the Number 3 peak of her self-titled debut album, which also appears in this week’s Top 40, up nine places to Number 19.

Skepta, Chip and Young Adz’s new collaborative album Insomnia (3) completes an all-new Top 3 this week. The entry marks Skepta’s third Top 10 album, Chip’s third and first in nine years, and a first for Young Adz (fourth including his work with D-Block Europe).

Rock giants Pearl Jam claim their ninth Top 10 entry with Gigaton, new at 6; Canadian singer/producer Partynextdoor enters at 7 with his third album Partymobile; Elton John’s greatest hits Diamonds rebounds nine places to 10 following his living room charity concert last Sunday.

Elsewhere, US rapper and singer Joyner Lucas enters at Number 16 with his debut album ADHD and The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon lands at Number 32 with his third solo record Local Honey.

What a cringy statement. Not that they're wrong the album is kinda chill (at times). But referencing C****-** and mentioning the "shtait of da werld" has become too common and annoying.

what about #1 next week??! Her #s are holding up and (don't think) major competition plus LONG legs/hits. Not if but when this easily gets #1. 5S was ALL frontloaded unlike Dua

Yeah, at least Dua Lipa's album has consistency no matter what! :)

5SOS will probably be out of the Top 10 in next week's chart.

Except New Rules is her WORST song, #1's dont entirely determine success, longevity or quality. Future Nostalgia is immediately being hailed as one of the best albums of the year so far by critics and public alike, far above and beyond from her debut.

She has plenty of other singles that didnt reach #1 (IDGAF, Be The One, One Kiss - must've heard these songs about a billion times in every clothes store and commercial radio station) and still have millions of millions of streams/views.

Heck her debut didnt even hit #1 and shes still making the top 5 with pretty much every release. Dont Start Now even still hit #2 in UK + US, and this banger makes New Rules sound as generic as it actually is, and is still tearing up the charts despite being released back in NOVEMBER.

The simple facts make your comment utterly redundant, She seems really cool and down to earth and easily one of the better traditional pop acts along with people like Carly Rae & Robyn. Deserves all the success and acclaim with this era.

Ah, I was wondering when we'd get an obsessed 5SOS fan (probably from Stan Twitter) hating on Dua.

Her current album has already peaked at #2, which even then, passed the peak of her last album (#3). Also, given the fact that 'Future Nostalgia' has been #1 on iTunes since the start of the tracking week & that doesn't look it's changing, along with the fact that traditional album sales are much lower than usual at the moment, that essentially means she's very likely to win the sales race!

Heck, she'll probably be top on streaming again too, since all of her album tracks would've landed inside the Top 60 of the singles chart if it wasn't for the "three songs" rule. Despite that, she still managed three songs in the Top 10, which is something that her self-titled debut album didn't even come close to doing.

As for 'New Rules' being her peak, that's absolute rubbish! 'One Kiss' was a much bigger hit in the UK (the biggest overall of 2018 in fact) & while 'Don't Start Now' didn't hit #1, it has been in the Top 5 for most weeks since last November if you take out Christmas. If anything, she's only getting bigger with every lead single she releases, especially in other countries!

So yeah, get back to me next week & we'll see where both albums are then! I'm not "butthurt" in the slightest & besides, #2 is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. :D

Also, let me be perfectly clear about something... I don't want 5SOS' new album to drop that far, but I just think it will given that their debut units were almost completely from pure album sales & that they don't have any hits from this album.

I still really like the band & wish them all the best for everything! :)

I’m really surprised that Dua Lipa wasn’t #1, but I think her streaming success will mean she hits the top spot next week! Absolutely incredible album though & she should have three songs in the Top 10 of the singles chart later, which I’m still thrilled about!

Congratulations to 5 Seconds Of Summer though! It’s impressive that they’ve had enough staying power to still top this chart after releasing four studio albums, especially for a male group who broke through five years ago now.

I feel like The Weeknd’s album is going to be sticking around for a while too! :)

Hi Piran! I'm bummed that Dua Lipa didn't debut at #1, but hey, if her album does maintain longevity and goes #1 next week, then none of the noise this week will matter. Her album is currently #1 on the UK iTunes store, so that's a good sign.

Piran

1

Hey Scott! :)

Yeah, another reason is that the streams for her singles will be a lot higher too, so that'll help the album on the streaming side of things too.

If anything, at least she got a new personal best on the albums chart today. It would be very unfortunate if her album got blocked at #2 on the albums chart, while the lead single also got blocked at #2 on the singles chart!

Yeah, but I don't see any major competition for next week and 5SOS only have enough fuel to last one week at the summit, so chances of going #1 for Dua Lipa look good. Even if her album doesn't go #1, getting nominated for AOTY at the Grammys (and possibly winning) is a bigger honor, which I have a feeling she's gonna do both! ;)

avatar

Piran

Yeah, no big albums that came out this week, as far as I'm aware.

Oh yeah, an AOTY nomination is likely to happen for it. I won't go as far as to say it'll win just yet, but if it ages well, then I really hope so! ;)
