While there’s nothing like making an instant impact on the Official Chart, we also love a slow burner – that huge hit you just know is going to happen, waiting in the wings for the right moment. And burners don’t come much slower than Justin Timberlake’s debut album Justified, which finally reached the top spot on the Official Albums Chart ten – yes, TEN – years ago, after over six months of trying.
Released on the back of his first solo single Like I Love You, the former 'N Sync warbler’s album didn’t make quite the impression he had hoped. While its lead single was a smash, hitting Number 2 in October 2002 and going on to sell over 300,000 copies, the album charted at Number 6 on its debut, slipping out of the Official Albums Chart Top 20 the week after.
A slew of massive singles helped keep the album in everybody’s hearts, if not at the top of the charts, with Cry Me A River and its famous Britney-baiting video landing at Number 2. So far it’s his third biggest selling solo single, shifting over 330,000 copies. The catchy Rock Your Body landed Justin a third consecutive Number 2 in May 2003, breathing new life into the album. The renewed Timberlake fever finally took the album to its rightful place at the summit of the Official Albums Chart in June 2003, where it remained for an impressive seven consecutive weeks.
Sadly, Justified never did deliver the Number 1 hit single Justin was after; he’d have to wait until SexyBack in July 2006, the lead single from his second long player FutureSex/LoveSounds. SexyBack is his second biggest seller as a solo artist, racking up over 485,000 sales. Justified is still his top-selling album, however, with over 1.9million copies sold. It’s out in front of its follow-up by over 700,000 copies.
A decade on, and Justin Timberlake is still riding high. His third album The 20/20 Experience – yes, only three albums over ten years; sort it out JT! – is one of 2013’s biggest sellers, currently in fourth place after only 11 weeks on the chart. Unlike Justified, The 20/20 Experience went straight in at Number 1, where it remained for three weeks. And he has had his biggest success in the Official Singles Chart since the start of his career, with Number 1 hit Mirrors shifting over 600,000 copies since its release in February to lead the way as one of the Top 5 biggest selling tracks of the year!
While his album output might be a little on the scarce side, he’s been popping up all over the place on the Official Singles Chart as a featured artist. Some of his biggest successes have been as a guest star, with his best-performing outing being the 2008 smash 4 Minutes with the mighty Madonna, notching up almost 500,000 copies in the UK and hitting the Number 1 spot all over the world. So far, 4 Minutes is Madonna’s biggest-selling digital download.
He also hit Number 1 with Timbaland and Nelly Furtado back in 2007, with Give It To Me selling nearly 320,000 copies, and has had big chart smashes with 50 Cent, TI, Rihanna and Ciara.
So what better way to celebrate Justin Timberlake’s decade of dominance than a Top 20 countdown of all the big hits to feature his perfect pipes.
