Hi everybody, LameLemur102 here, and itās time for a review of the Ava Max song, āKings & Queensā. There was so much hype on here and ABBA comparisons, so I thought I was gonna enjoy this, but oh no, what I got was a real disappointment. Firstly, the structure is simple and poorly written, especially as thereās no second verse (the bridge might have to be it) and Ava Max delivers vocals that do absolutely nothing for me. It somehow gets even worse when we get to the guitar solo - I get it, itās a pop song, theres not meant to be guitar, but itās so computerised that I canāt like it one bit! The content is embarrassing too - it seems like just another feminist anthem, but dig deeper and sheās basically saying that kings are weaker than queens! So yeah, not liking this one at all, Clap Your Hands is so much better! Iām thinking a solid-strong 3/10. :(

Quite a heavy shake up in the T#op 40 this week, which was needed in my opinion. Very happy to see Head & Heart chart in at number 15, although I think it will rise into the top 10 over the next couple of weeks.
What's also interesting to see is that Disclosure's recent song 'My High' has entered in at 86 - I really think this one has potential to do well in the charts but we'll see.
One song that could potentially enter the top 100 over the next few weeks is John Summit - Deep End. It seems to be circulating on TikTok lately and is in the Top 10 UK Viral Chart on Spotify. Its definitely worth a listen if you liked Pour the Milk and Pump It Up

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (10/07/2020 - 16/07/2020)
This is one of those weeks where it doesnāt look like itāll be too hectic on the surface, but dig a little deeper & youāll see that last weekās new music was all over the place, which has resulted in nine new songs here! That also means a really long review from me today, haha.
Anyway, while I said a couple weeks back that āSavage Loveā being Song Of The Summer for 2020 was a bold prediction, Iām now saying Iāll be really surprised if it didnāt get that accolade! While itās been competing with āRockstarā on streams for a while, its sales are well out in front & it's picking up way more momentum on the radio than any other song. Yeah, itās not going anywhere for a whileā¦ heck, itās probably not even peaked in performance yet either!
Elsewhere, I really like āDancing In The Moonlightā finally getting some recognition outside of Capital FM to be one of the very few climbers we had this week, but the real reason most of the songs this week are falling (even despite none being placed on ACR) are due to the insane number of new arrivals this week.
The biggest of which, perhaps unsurprisingly, is āWest Tenā by AJ Tracey & Mabel, which is now a Top 10! Anyway, while I do like this a lot & it didnāt even need to grow on me this time, I do find that there are way too many similarities to āLadbroke Groveā here. The first big indicator is that he literally named the title of the song after his home area again without any reference to it in the content & he even enlisted the help of a rising female star to sing on the hook! That being said, while these similarities arenāt exactly amazing for originality, theyāre certainly appealing features to the song. Like Jorja Smith, Mabel brings her smooth & fresh vocals to a hook that will definitely stick in your mind, even though Iām not sure about her chemistry with AJ Tracey here, but AJ Tracey himself is bringing a really fast lyrical flow! Seriously, you can tell that this guy is just naturally awesome with songwriting & especially freestyles. Even the content isnāt that far removed from what weāre used to with these two artists, mild bragging from AJ Tracey while also keeping the vibe of the song very summery & Mabel gaining independence from a man whoās been troubling her! So yeah, while there are certainly a couple of issues here that will always bug me a little, theyāre thankfully only minor. Therefore, Iām giving this a solid 7/10!
Now, that brings us on to Pop Smoke, who lands three debuts on this weekās chart! Hereās the thing, while I know the background behind his tragic death at such a young age, Iāve only heard one song of his (āDiorā) & that was okay at best, so I didnāt really have any particular expectations for any of the songs he has here today. Anyway, Iāll just run through these a bit faster than the other new entries! āThe Wooā has some interesting trap production, but the delivery from each rapper was fairly underwhelming, so Iām giving this one a strong 5/10. āFor The Nightā was sadly a lot more dull until DaBaby stepped in, but even then, this is far from his best, so thatās getting a solid 4/10! The last one, āMake It Rainā didnāt even appear in the chart update despite charting low down last week, but Iām liking Pop Smokeās laid-back delivery here along with much more chilled production, so this is probably the best of the three with a solid 6/10. In general, Iām certainly not against the breakthrough he had this week as my ratings show, but his music just isnāt for me! May he rest in peace though.
In fact, while weāre on the topic of rap songs, letās go over the songs from that genre by some of the British newcomers! Unfortunately, Digga D has yet to really impress me with anything heās put out, but man, I really donāt think heās doing to do it with this. See, Digga D could have potential with how sincere he sounds & how he switches up his flow, but there are some real mixing issues with the homegrown production here, along with the fact that it fails to have any bombast or substance at all! Overall though, none of that matters anyway, but itās the lyrics that killed this entirely for me. Sure, I couldāve predicted the entirely immature description of this girlās private parts, but the continued repetition of āwoi-woi-woiā, especially when itās so high-pitched & aggravating, might be the worst thing Iāve heard in a UK urban hit since KSI made the abomination that was āPoppinā earlier this year! No, this is absolutely terrible, letās pray it doesnāt start any kind of trend. Strong 2/10!
Then thereās Deno teaming up with OFB (Bandokay & Double LZ) for āCirclesā! All Iāve got to say is, youāre brave making a song with this title when Post Malone recently broke records with the song of the same name, but you know what, this actually turned out reasonably well. Whatās pleasantly surprising about Deno is that I prefer him as a singer more than a rapper, but heās got the kind of soulful vocals where autotune actually works for him, as this one appears to confirm! That being said, you get beyond the 45 second mark & the vibe feels very different, switching out the sombre & twinkling production for a very well-crafted drill beat, which seems to fluctuate in & out at just the right time. In general, the three rappers seem to spar really well with one another throughout! Iām not sure if this stands out enough to have any significant staying power, but Iām definitely digging this on first listen! Light 7/10.
Okay, letās not put it off any longer, weāve got to Kanye West, who as many of you know, Iām not a fan of at all! Itās fair to say I had my worries with this song, especially when heās working alongside Ty Dolla $ign, FKA Twigs & Skrillex of all people on this. That being said, eh, Iām more frustrated by this than disappointed! See, the brassy vocals sampled from the club classic āYou Used To Love Meā are still a signature dancefloor classic today, but they just donāt feel compatible in a predominantly Ty Dolla $ign song. To be honest, I actually start to get into this a bit more when he takes centre stage, delivery blunt but surprisingly emotionally deep lines over a groovy bass progression consisting of just four notes! A lot of this continues into Kanyeās part too, even if his content is all about the Super Bowl, Grammys, voting & birth control (not surprised given his recent actions). However, the best part of the song wouldāve lied within the end of the song from FKA Twigsā outro, except the retro-house vibe ended so abruptly & simply didnāt last as long it should have! To be honest, this song didnāt sound anywhere near like I thought it would, but given everyone who was crammed onto this record, it turns out mostly fine overall. Solid 6/10!
One more rap song left & itās one thatās been getting a really polarising response all over social media, including on here, āWhatās Poppinā by Jack Harlow! Just to clarify, Iāll only be reviewing the original as thatās the version thatās credited on OCCās record (plus, I havenāt heard the remix yet, even if thatās what ultimately got it took off ACR). Anyway, man, if thereās a TikTok song from America thatās crept up on me over these past few weeks, itās this one! At first I thought his delivery was simply a mix of, say, G-Eazy & Logic, but then you realise that he maintained his consistently speedy flow for the entirety of a very extended verse & that he can somehow command that well alongside a quirky piano line & a fizzy trap beat, which actually leads to an intriguing idea here. Iām never going to get on board with this in the same way that Coolocelot would, but at least I can say I enjoy this. Strong 7/10!
The last review is for a song that I literally only just heard for the first time, āHead & Heartā by Joel Corry & MNEK, which is yet another collaboration that I didnāt see coming! Being an EDM fan, I donāt understand why I always leave listening to some bangers until the end of the tracking week. Among the guest singers, MNEK alone makes this more uplifting than both āSorryā & āLonelyā combined, even if Iām not too sold on the āheartbeatā style hook (but itāll probably grow on me anyway). I think what Joel Corry brings this time which weāve not really seen from him before are smooth & glimmering chords to accompany the drop, which would give this so much more attention in clubs that both of its predecessors if clubs were actually open! Overall, again, I mightāve only just heard it, but that doesnāt mean it canāt be the best new entry of the week, which you know what, it actually is by a long way. Light 9/10 for this one!
Finally, the DaBaby remix of āDonāt Rushā is somehow even better than the original, haha! Itās a shame that none of the songs from the new Eurovision movie made this week, but it looks like that new Kid Cudi & Eminem collaboration will make a considerable impact on next weekās chart.

I like rap, but I hate how we get loads of 1-weekers in the chart. With Joel Corry for example, he drops enough to get every single on an individual Now CD, whereas some rappers drop every other week it seems, and if they're UK, the chances are it'll go top 40. Also, Piran, the other day we had a chat about ACR, and I remembered about Christmas.
