Do you know what I predict is going to happen?

I think within the next week or two, some of the biggest artists around right now are going to record a charity song for coronavirus! It’ll be like Band Aid or Helping Haiti, but everyone will record it from their own homes.

If that does happen, watch it break sales records & debut at #1 in every country around the world!

The genre is really underappreciated here. Although it did release on a Monday, so it might be here next week (probably not though).

Guys, do you think COVID-19 will affect the charts at all? If more harsh lockdown procedures are put in, as is looking likelier by the day, then may we see less releases, due to artists being unable to get collaborators in?

avatar

Piran

3

I don't think it'll affect the genres of music nor success of artists as such, nor even collaborations, since artists can always send demos between studios.

I do think there could be more hits without music videos though, due to tougher restrictions on having lots of people in one place at the same time!

avatar

old account

1

The only thing I think will be affected willl be music videos. It could be a problem getting to studios, but I see that as highly unlikely.

Hey! here's something where I post my favourite/least favourite hits of a year. To start I shall work my way through the 2010's starting with 2010.

2010 was all about the party in music, and this is reflected in the UK year end list, where all these song featured. I'm not gonna come out and call this a bad trend, but its highlights were few and far between. There was some very good and very bad music, so lets begin.

TOP TEN WORST UK HITS OF 2010

10) KATY PERRY- FIREWORK
Boring overplayed motivational songs will always exist, what use is it complaining about them?

9) DUCK SAUCE- BARBRA STREISLAND
I’ve never got club songs that feature little or new words, but that’s my preference, and I keep that in mind. That said, this song was one of the hardest to get through I’ve ever heard

8) USHER FT. WILL.I.AM- OMG
Usher is an artist who has a pleasant voice, but needs good music and lyrics, and this song has neither. OMG (which stands for “Oh My Gosh”) start’s with a ridiculously forced producer tag and doesn’t improve. In the lyrics he messes up seducing a woman by, among other things, saying her rear end is like “Pow pow pow” and referencing her “Boobies”. Also, those horrific cheers.

7) TIMBERLAND FT. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE- CARRY OUT
I like the concept of a song comprised of saucy fast food metaphors, but this song just doesn’t go all in stupid enough. Also the production is bland and not up to Timberland’s usual high standard.

6) YOUNG MONEY- BEDROCK
Grocery bags

5) TRAIN- HEY SOUL SISTER
Like Bedrock, everyone knows how bad this song is. The lyrics are notoriously awful, with Pat Monahan going from his chest hair, the how gangster he is, and many, many, stupid places inbetween. An utter derailment.

4) JUSTIN BIEBER FT. LUDICRAS- BABY
Perhaps the easiest target in existence. As bad as everyone says it is.

3) JASON DERULO- IN MY HEAD
Now sadly I’m not experienced in this matter, but I’m fairly sure women don’t like being told how hot they are in men’s fantasies. Fell free to tell me otherwise though.

2) 3OH!3 FT. KATY PERRY- STARSTRUKK
Do YOU remember 3OH!3. Probably not, they were just an awful frat-rap duo who we mystifyingly huge at the turn of the decade. This is their only big UK hit, and It’s bad. The lyrics go in one ear and out the other, and despite just listening to it all I remember is them bragging about what they do to girls meat and going “whop-wo!”. And also Katy Perry was at her peak in 2010, why did she need to do this to herself?

And the #1 is…
1) DAVID GUETTA FT. CHRIS WILLIS, FERGIE & - GETTIN’ OVER YOU (REMIX)
I don’t hate David Guetta. I don’t love him but he’s fine. This is his clear worst song however. Fergie & Chris Willis’ oversinging is pretty bad, but the nail in the coffin is , whom I will get to in 2011. They tie their basic party rapping to the heartbreak “narrative” so loosely, and then, when I’m still thinking this isn’t too bad and will probably end up at around #5. “Ima party and party and party and…”. I have no idea why this was released but it never should have been.

And now my favourites!

TOP TEN BEST UK HITS OF 2010

10) B.O.B FT. BRUNO MARS- NOTHIN’ ON YOU
Featuring two of the year’s biggest breakout stars, “Nothin’ On You” is a simple love song but an effective one nevertheless as the artists demonstrate their love for their SO. It’s a bit cheesy though, so it’s only at the bottom of the list.

9) RIHANNA FT. DRAKE- WHAT’S MY NAME
√69=8.3066238629

8) RIHANNA- RUDE BOY
Rhianna’s always been very hit or miss for me, as her 2010 hits show. While “What’s My Name” & “Rude Boy” are both exceptional R&B songs, “Only Girl (In The World”) & “Te Amo” stick out less for me. I really like her voice and with the right production she can make something special, as these two songs show.

7) B.O.B FT. HAYLEY WILLIAMS- AIRPLANES
B.o.B is a textbook “have one massive year and then fall back into the background” artist. So, before he became rap’s #1 flat earther, how was his music? Honestly not good. His two #1’s in 2020 are both absolutely carried by their hooks, as he laid down decent but safe rap verses. Hayley’s one of my favourite singers though, and her chorus is iconic.

6) EMINEM- NOT AFRAID
More a song I admire than seek out often.

5) YOLANDA BE COOL VS. DCUP- WE NO SPEAK AMERICANO
In a year- and a decade- that was filled with boring interchangeable club & EDM songs, this song is a breath of fresh air. 10 years on still fully unique.

4) OWL CITY- FIREFLIES
Another one-hit wonder, Owl City is not a good singer of even lyricist (“I’m weird because I hate goodbyes”), but somehow he manages to capture youthful imagination perfectly in this song.

3) EMINEM FT. RIHANNA- LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE
The OCC’s #1 song of the year, and a deserved one. One of modern Eminem’s most instantly recognisable song, his verses paint a clear picture of a destructive relationship. Rihanna’s part is great as well.

2) CEELO GREEN- F—K YOU
THE song of the early 2010’s? Possibly. CeeLo somehow manages to stay classy while hurling the most basic insult at his ex, something which hasn’t been repeated before or since. Also, in the song’s bridge it becomes clear he’s not actually over her, which somehow makes him more likable as a man getting over his ex by telling himself “You know what, screw her anyway”.

And the #1 is…
1) PLAN B- SHE SAID
I’ll be honest, I’d forgotten this coming in to make these picks. But as soon as I heard this is was a shoe-in. “She Said” is able to sound lovely while making an engaging storyline. This song is taken from album “The Defamation Of Strickland Banks” and is about a famous singer who loses his career and freedom under a false assault allegation. “She Said” features Strickland desperately trying-and failing to prove his innocence. Plan B’s rap verse captures the story particularly well, but his singing parts also fit in well. And easy pick for my favourite hit of 2010.

Thank you if you read this far. Which are your best/worst songs of 2010?

Could Doja Cat can make it to the Top 5 next week? Piran...what do you think?

I really hope so too, but I think 'Say So' needs to catch up a bit on Apple Music before that happens.

I was expecting Joel Corry to finally make the top 5 this week!! His new single was climbing the chart so quickly then...a non mover this week...

avatar

That's what happens with songs that climb fast. They just get into the bottom of Top 10 and stay there until they go on ACR.

Katy Perry only at 97!! that can't be right..

Thierry, I wanted to ask what you thought of all the Eurovision entries this year? I believe every participating country has announced their songs now! :)

avatar

thierry henon

1

OMG! I didn't know every participating country has announced their song already...Yeah...i will definitely have to check out the songs over the week end...I will first listen to the UK song...that goes without saying...but then Norway and Sweden...and so on...What about you Piran?

avatar

Piran

1

I've actually checked out most songs this year & unlike most of the recent years, I actually agree with the polls this time! :D

Lithuania's & Iceland's are incredibly fun & catchy, Bulgaria's is just like Billie Eilish, Norway's is powerful, Sweden's is gospel-inspired, Italy's is beautiful once again, ours is a much stronger & raw ballad, so yeah, it's looking to be an above average year overall.

I just hope coronavirus doesn't cause Eurovision to be postponed or cancelled this year...

Sam Smith finally getting his great new single into the Top 20..Finally...Hope he can make it to the Top 10 next week...

I do hope Demi can make it to the top 20 next week? Any thought about the single climbing the chart Piran?.

I'll post my rating a bit later, but overall... I'm not too sold on the production, but her deep lyrics & strong powerhouse vocals mostly make up for that! :)

You know, 2020 might've got off a really bad start for me in general & to everyone else because of coronavirus or severe weather, but at least the charts are finally starting to look promising again if anything.

I don't think I'm ever going to get tired of 'Blinding Lights' being #1, given that it's still a 10/10 for me, even after being at the top for over a month now. I really hope 'Roses' can still get there too & while it's interesting to see 'Rain' make a massive debut, it was just okay for me.

The highlights for me this week were 'Physical' entering the Top 10 & 'To Die For' hitting the Top 20, as well as BENEE finally making her chart debut (even if she did need TikTok to do it!).

Lil Uzi Vert made a better impact than expected too! His music isn't for me sadly, but cool for him & his fans regardless.

Scores of the new songs in the Top 40 coming later as usual! :D

The charts are a positive compared to coronavirus.
Now in our country, they locked up schools from Tuesday, the 17th of March to Friday, the 17th of April. Which also means, the pre-exams are cancelled or delayed, I don't know, but they won't be on Wednesday.

As for the positives,
the songs were decent. "Rain" is a surprise for me with how much I like this more than I should.
"Physical" in the top 10 and "To Die For" in the top 20 is great too!
And of course "Blinding Lights" at #1 is fantastic.

avatar

Piran

2

Hey Sergej! :)

Yeah, the UK haven't done as such drastic measures yet, but I think they're going to follow what the rest of Europe are doing in a week or two! I'm starting to panic a lot more about it now, but there's nothing I can do other than washing my hands more & trying to encourage work to let me work away from the office.

Agreed regarding all the remarks about the new chart! How are things looking in the German charts anyway? Loredana got another #1 single, didn't she?

avatar

Sergej Dordij

2

Yes, in Germany Loredana has another #1 single, but I don't see it stick at #1, Samra could make it next week with his new single.

avatar

Piran

2

Samra getting another #1?! He's going to become the next Capital Bra in a moment... :D

avatar

Sergej Dordij

1

Oh god, we don't need another Capital Bra/Joker Bra.

avatar

Sergej Dordij

0

I need to take it back, looking at the midweeks, "Blinding Lights" could be #1 on Friday and I'm absolutely fine with that!

avatar

Piran

1

Isn't it something like 20 or 21 #1's he had now? I've literally lost count! :O

I bet Drake spending all that time atop the Hot 100 in 2018 was nothing to compared to what Capital Bra's been doing in Germany.

I mean, I actually think he's an okay rapper, but his chart success is your country is beyond overkill!

avatar

Sergej Dordij

1

I replied to myself, that The Weeknd could take #1 in the midweek charts.
And Capital Bra has 20!!! #1 songs, that IS Overkill, Drake looks like a saint compared to Capital Bra, I mean, JESUS.

avatar

Piran

1

Ah okay, well that's awesome about 'Blinding Lights' being top of your charts, even if I doubt it'll get to the top of mine!

Yeah, although I think that number will get higher in the coming months, given how big Deutschrap is starting to get. :/

avatar

Sergej Dordij

1

No, I was talking about the German Midweek charts, in my chart "Walk With Me" by Mans Zelmerlöw could go to #1. "Blinding Lights" is the #1 in the German Midweek chart.

avatar

Piran

1

Oh well, that's still amazing news about your country's chart! Nice to see a former Eurovision winner still dominating your charts. ;)

Right now, it's still tight between 'Tears Getting Sober' & '22' for #1, but we'll find out on Friday morning!
