Hi Ronald! How are you today and how was your week end? thank you so much for the link and for the song SOMETHING ABOUT YOU...Great song but fantastic video as well!! I like RUDIMENTAL but never heard of ELDERBROOK...BTW do you like our UK number 1 album this week? I am so pleased! I have just discovered 2 weeks ago DERMOT KENNEDY..Love his new single OUTNUMBERED...Massive success in Ireland...I was expecting LIZZO to reach the top 5 single in Scotland this week as she had a massive jump last week but she dropped from 6 to 13!! Have a great day...

Had a great weekend Thierry, tiny school reunion with friends from primary school. Hope you had a great weekend too. I will look into DERMOT later today (tonight). I have heard of him but have not listened to his music yet. Shame about LIZZO, I thought she would go up a couple of places too. Have a great Monday!

Gary Glitter a re-entry at No. 51 in The Sales Chart. How did that happen!. All I can think of is that on BBC 4 they show repeats of old Top Of The Pops and recently The Timelords were No.1 with "Doctorin' The Tardis" which sampled Gary Glitter's "Rock n' Roll part 2". Never though i'd see that name in the charts again though

Why is the OCC incapable of writing the full complete credits of artists in the chart and also use punctuation when needed.. its Dan + Shay, not Dan & Shay

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

‘Dance Monkey’ by Tones & I remains at #1 on the singles chart for a second consecutive week! This week, it achieved another 70,700 combined sales, including 7.34 million streams.

‘Circles’ by Post Malone becomes the new #1 on the national airplay chart!

It’s a sixth consecutive week at #1 on Britain’s YouTube chart for ‘Take Me Back To London’ by Ed Sheeran ft Stormzy, although it loses another 8.6% of its weekly views, down to 2.39 million.

TRAVIS SCOTT - HIGHEST IN THE ROOM (#2)
I think despite the fact that his recent breakup with Kylie Jenner is big on social media platforms right now or that he’s collaborated with almost everyone now, Travis Scott’s peak as a solo artist was still to come anyway! I think the fact that this debuted this high out of nowhere shows how unnoticed new music of his can go, so it’s a shame that this isn’t all that exciting! Sorry, but this is what happens when a song tries to be too formulaic, with a trap bounce that ends up becoming too warbled in the production, or the crypted lyrics that you’ll find eventually become too repetitive. My point is that there are some clever ideas here, but they’re sadly not being conveyed into the song in the correct way. Regarding Travis himself, there’s not a lot I can say about how he presents the themes of this song, since the auto-tune is still so clear & his flow is a lot more broken than usual anyway. Speaking of these themes, I can see why he’d want to discuss the relationship with his ex-girlfriend & mother of his child, so it doesn’t help when you discuss your self-proclaimed title of being the most intoxicated person wherever you are. If I can credit anything, it’s that the unexpected switch-up at the end of the song actually has some effect unlike in ‘Sicko Mode’, with the thumping piano notes & the general dynamic of the song reaching a climax. Outside of that, I can still see the appeal here & this was able to grow on me slightly throughout the week, but I’m probably not going to care for this for more than a week or two. Therefore, extremely light 5/10!

DAN + SHAY & JUSTIN BIEBER - 10,000 HOURS (#19)
For as much as I still have issues with JB’s behaviour, I don’t deny that I can at least see a significant level of maturity in his musical direction looking back at his career so far. More to the point, he’s been considerably diverse, now heading into a country endeavour with an American duo who are criminally underrated on this side of the Atlantic on their own! Yet, this collaboration turned out better than I think anybody expected it would! The first thing I’m attracted to here are the more traditional country elements, such as the gentle drum groove & smoother guitars, allowing it to easily fit into the genre & not be disputed whether or not it really qualifies as country (unlike ‘Old Town Road’ which many considered hip-hop, or ‘Meant To Be’ that a lot of critics called pop), because it so clearly does! Vocally, it’s actually not that easy to distinguish between Dan + Shay & Justin Bieber across the song, but I think JB’s delivery is a bit more breathy against the slightly huskier harmonies from Dan + Shay. I also like the love-focussed sentiment in the lyrics, even if you’ll clearly notice that are way too many questions being asked to the girl at the start of the song. Overall though, while I doubt this would’ve even charted at all if it weren’t for the JB feature, I really hope this is the breakthrough that Dan + Shay need to get more success here, because I could see a lot of people falling in love with their music! For me, very strong 8/10!

SUMMER WALKER - PLAYING GAMES (#25)
Okay, I didn’t see this one coming! I knew Summer Walker had been doing decently on Apple Music thanks to the release of her new music, but if there’s another reason as to why this jumped a massive 68 places today, I honestly have no idea what it is! Unfortunately, I’ve also got surprisingly little to say on the song itself. For a singer that’s as pure & organic as Summer Walker is, there’s very little change in tone here, which makes her sound completely boring after about a minute. Not only that, but you really don’t want a drum machine that’s this basic on a song that’s trying to embrace a more modern indie-R&B style. The acoustic & synths sadly don’t fit in anywhere here, which makes them sound a lot more cheap than they should be, especially when Summer Walker’s vocals are already overmixed. I can at least appreciate that her tone matches the content of the song, which discusses romantic partners being full of talk & little of action, but the biggest problem is that reflects the whole vibe of the song, especially London On Da Track’s production tag killing the atmosphere entirely. I should like this a lot more than I do & I want to support the resurgence of this kind of music in the charts, but this really isn’t doing it for me at all! On that note, yeah, solid 4/10! I know that’ll be a disappointing score to many of you, but for me, it’s also an honest one.

HALSEY - GRAVEYARD (#38)
This’ll sound weird, but I feel like half of Halsey’s music disappoints me, while the other half can really impress me! I’ve highlighted before that I often prefer either her featured appearances, or some of her more recent material. With this though, I’m really not sure where I fall on it as a whole! I was expecting a much darker tone from Halsey given not only the title of this song, but previous singles like ‘Nightmare’ or ‘11 Minutes’, or even the sombre tones of ‘Without Me’, which suggested she was heading in a more pop-rock direction... yet, this has much more of a brighter melody than any of those! The percussion feels a lot more natural this time around which is fine enough, but beyond the handclaps, there’s little that Halsey is showing in regards to her vocals. It’s an interesting concept in how Halsey addresses her interest in toxic lovers & her admitting to that, but I’d argue she plays it safe here & it’s left me a bit confused in the artistic direction she wants to go in. Still, I was pleasantly surprised by the bridge at least adding some thrill to this, so for that, I’m thinking a solid 6/10!

On the albums chart, Dermot Kennedy lands a debut #1 album with ‘Without Fear’! He’s the first Irish solo act to accomplish this feat since ‘Ronan’ by Ronan Keating in July 2000, almost 20 years ago! Back in his homeland, it’s the fastest selling album of 2019 so far.

The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Abbey Road’ by The Beatles (1-2), ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ by Ed Sheeran (6-3), ‘Hollywood’s Bleeding’ by Post Malone (5-4) & ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (3-5).

Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Lights Up’ by Harry Styles, ‘Sun Queen’ by Gerry Cinnamon, ‘47’ by Sidhu Moose Wala x MIST x Steel Banglez x Stefflon Don, ‘Outside’ by D-Block Europe, ‘Lose Control’ by MEDUZA, Becky Hill & GOODBOYS, ‘Memories’ by Maroon 5 & maybe even more.

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Dance Monkeys made it to 11 weeks at number 1 down here so if I never here it again I'll be very happy. I'd love to see rode it get to number one eventually in the UK since taste (make it shake) and Ladbroke grove won't be getting there.

I love 10,000 hours it's such a sweet and beautiful song (from the ground up is one of my favourite songs of all time), I'm seeing Dan and Shay open for Shawn Mendes next Wednesday and I'm pretty much only going for them.

Hey Brandon! How's your week been? :)

I'm really pleased for Dermot Kennedy too! Not only did he get his first Top 10 hit in the UK this week, but his debut album went to #1 & he was able to debut two other songs in chart as well, including the long overdue 'Power Over Me'!

I absolutely loved his debut album, as my most recent Crown Note chart shows.

That's for updating me on the latest South African singles chart! I do think 'Dance Monkey' will definitely be a future #1 in your country, probably within the next week or two. 'Memories' is probably heading for the Top 10 in the next chart too.

Lower down in the chart, it's interesting to see 'Shameless' in the chart, but 'Liar' is nowhere to be seen! Not many countries where the former is more popular than the latter.

I'm guessing country music isn't that big in SA, unless maybe it's local? Either way, like you, I love seeing '10,000 Hours' here too!

Finally, I'm also pleased to see 'Trampoline' here! Is this because of the original or the remix with ZAYN?

Hey Ebony! How's it going? :)

Yeah, I saw that 'Dance Monkey' broke the record for longest #1 song by an Australian artist last week, as well as the longest #1 by any female solo artist this week.

I guess at this point where you are, even people who like the song are getting tired of it, while those who didn't like it to begin are just finding it unbearable by now. I imagine it's also one of those hits that getting played multiple times every hour on Australian radio, right?

Hopefully 'Ride It' will make it, but 'Dance Monkey' seems too dominant across the board to be shifted by anything at the moment. I see it staying there for at least another month unless there's a big album release before then. It would've been cool seeing 'Ladbroke Grove' go to #1, given how much of a slow burner that song's been in the UK, although ACR has to be coming for it soon.

The only point we really disagree on is 'Taste [Make It Shake]', where I was really disappointed with it from the start, so I'm glad that had such a massive fall this week!

I'm pleased that we have mutual thoughts on '10,000 Hours' though! I've always loved Dan + Shay too, but I was equally impressed by how well JB could actually pull off a country song.

avatar

Piran

1

Agreed on all points! :)

What are your favourite tracks from the album?

Another thing to mention is that, while 'Outnumbered' enters the Top 10 for the first time in the new chart, it's likely going to climb even further in the coming weeks.

You mean the sales chart? It's #19 on the real chart.

Hie Piran Country music isn't so popular in South Africa not even an inch ;local dominates . Our sales based on streams, airplay radio and downloads YouTube, streaming platforms like Spotify and radio request. I was surprised that Liar isn't so popular here but I like both as for myself .It has been bubbling under Liar
.As for 10000 hrs it's a surprise it's because Justin bieber they love him in south africa and the song it's like pop/country mix .As for Trampoline it's because of Zayn remix yes. As for Radio Chart we tired of Senorita every station every second you here it. As for Dance monkey it's selling massive on downloads /buying on iTunes. and every radio station it's picking up was massive it stands a big chance to knock off Sam Smith. as for number 1 next week contenders Maroon 5 eyeing because on streams it's looking good top 3 trending on YouTube
Usher and black coffee could also because on radio charts biggest gainer considering the time of release. But Dance monkey stand a bigger chance to take the top position.

avatar

Piran

So it's essentially similar to the Billboard charts in the US? I personally disagree with including airplay in an official chart, since outside of requests, it's far less representative of popularity than all other chart metrics.

South Africa has a bubbling under chart too? I've always thought it's a bit of a shame that the UK charts don't either. I think our national charts go to a Top 200, although you have to pay to see those.

Even with the ZAYN remix, 'Trampoline' hasn't really made much of an impact over here at all, probably because it's a different kind of sound compared to everything else in the charts right now.

'Senorita' is starting to get really overplayed over here to the point where even I'm starting to get tired of it, which has to take a lot given that I rated the song a 10/10 when I reviewed it on here!

Regarding Camila, I'm really happy about 'Shameless' & 'Liar's success worldwide too! I think her next album is definitely going to #1 in a majority of countries worldwide. :)

I guess we're a bit distant from the rest of Europe politically at the moment, but yeah, I like where we live geographically.

Australia's still an awesome country that I'd love to visit one day though... well, minus all the snakes & spiders! :D

avatar

Ebony

1

Haha, I'm from a farm originally and yeah I saw a few spiders (they don't scare me though) but not too many snakes which is good since all reptiles terrify me.

avatar

Piran

0

Over here, we (thankfully) don't have any poisonous spiders. The worst ones only leave a small bite, but nothing serious beyond that.

Unfortunately, where you might not be so lucky is with snakes! We only really see them out in the summer & there are three different species, but the adder is the most dangerous one of these!

Fortunately, they'll rarely attack humans (they'll dash off like 99% of the time), so I'd say we're a fairly safe country in terms of wild animals overall, haha! :)

Dermot is very underrated in the UK..still glad he is huge in Ireland...he deserves more success to be honest/..He is very talented..and he has an amazing voice!
