A new album for Ariana?? What? But if Sweetener was released last year!! .It reminds me the time of PWL years when their artists released a new album each year, 😂.
on the other hand, Why so few new entries in the top 100?

Although I'm happy for Ariana going #1 again, at the same time I'm pretty disappointed with her new sound. It doesn't sound like the Ariana that I know. She's gone too far down the Trap vibe that has tainted so many artists nowadays and it really aggravates me to know that this is the type of music that's actually popular. What used to be upbeat and catchy dance-pop tunes has now been replaced with these repetitive trap beats with no life to them.
As for Ariana's next album, I don't like any of the songs so far, they're all bland and monotonous with little to no life to them compared to her previous albums. If this is the kind of sound to expect from her latest album, then I'm not looking forward to it.

Is there any song in the current top 100 as good as this pop song from 2017?

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘7 Rings’ by Ariana Grande debuts straight in at #1 on the singles chart! It’s Ariana’s fourth #1 in total & her second by herself.

- ‘7 Rings’ has a total opening week figure of 126,000 combined sales, consisting of 15,000 downloads & 16.9 million streams. In the latter case, it sets a new record for the most streams for a song in a single week in the UK! It's also a new personal best in terms of first week numbers for Ariana (surpassing 'Problem').

- ‘Nothing Breaks Like A Heart’ by Mark Ronson ft Miley Cyrus is still #1 on the weekly airplay chart.

- Despite being dethroned on the overall chart, ‘Sweet But Psycho’ by Ava Max is #1 on the nation’s YouTube chart for a third consecutive week. It even gained 10.9% in views from last week, with 3.1 million views over the past seven days.

- ARIANA GRANDE – 7 RINGS (#1)
I genuinely have no idea how Ariana’s upcoming album will sound in terms of musical direction, but based on what singles we’ve got so far, it’s looking to be very successful & even more interesting! With this, it’s not as good as ‘Thank U, Next’ but I’d take it over ‘Imagine’. The sample of ‘My Favourite Things’ is fine I guess & I can definitely sense the brightness in Ariana’s delivery in the verses, because she certainly sounds more convincing in her bragging here & especially in her rapping throughout the bridge. I can see why the content would put people off this though; just because she’s been through a lot of trouble doesn’t mean that she has to feel the need to be materialistic or arrogant here. I can’t really say a lot about the production, although I do like the bouncy groove & that the song opens similarly to ‘Thank U, Next’ yet quickly changes into a far more menacing tone. I think I definitely prefer pure pop Ariana over the R&B/rap she’s attempting here, but at least this highlights her versatility. Overall, I would say I like this a bit, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets old faster than her other hits for me. Light 7/10!

- MABEL – DON’T CALL ME UP (#11)
Looking back at the past year, I honestly can’t say there hasn’t been one song from Mabel that I haven’t at least slightly praised. With this, it’s on par with her other hits in terms of quality for sure, potentially even better if it can grow on me, which this could very well end up doing! Mabel brings arguably her best pop vocal to this song, which is ultimately a middle finger to a possessive ex & a declaration of her independence, which she does with such confidence & finesse! I’m not sure that the tropical beat will stick with me for very long or whether or not the delivery has enough of a punch to be as empowering as it’s trying to be, but if Mabel can maintain her consistency with upcoming singles, then she’s absolutely deserving of widespread support as we go further into 2019. Strong 6/10 for me!

- AJ TRACEY – PSYCH OUT (#27)
It appears that AJ Tracey will finally be releasing his debut album in only a couple of weeks from now & he’s only charted before with ‘Butterflies’, but if I had to make a list of grime hits that grew on me the most throughout 2018, that would probably have made it. ‘Psych Out’, however, is a slightly different style for AJ Tracey. Yeah, he still has a smooth flow & sounds notably better than most British urban artists, but this has a more melodic delivery than I otherwise would’ve expected. The production also leans into darker territory, while the softness of the vocals only further adds to the song’s intensity. My criticisms here would have to be the use of a generic & disposable trap beat, as well a little too much autotune placed on AJ Tracey’s voice. Overall though, while it might not stick with me, it’s just about passable. I’ll give this a very light 6/10.

- On the albums chart, ‘The Greatest Showman’ spends a 28th non-consecutive week at #1, outselling its nearest competition by 2:1! It ties ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ by The Beatles for weeks at the top, which means only five albums have spent longer at #1 (three of which were also soundtracks).

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ by George Ezra (stationary at #2), ‘Bohemian Rhapsody [Soundtrack]’ by Queen (stationary at #3), ‘A Star Is Born [Soundtrack]’ (stationary at #4) & ‘Human (EP)’ by Dodie (debuts at #5). There were a total of nine debuts inside the Top 40 this week.

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Middle Child’ by J Cole, ‘Think About Us’ by Little Mix ft Ty Dolla $ign, ‘Swan Song’ by Dua Lipa, 'Swervin' by A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie ft 6ix9ine & maybe even more.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hi Piran, I've followed your column for a while now, but am not sure how your gradings work. If you have a light 7/10 and a strong 6/10 which is better?

Hey Mike! :)
A light 7/10 is better than a strong 6/10 by my ratings.
I tend to think of a light 7/10 being 70-73%, while a strong 6/10 is 67-69%.

Oh OK, that makes sense then. I suppose you could put a percentage but doing it this way means you have more flexibility.

Personally, I tend to think of a light 7/10 as a 65-67%, while a strong 6/10 would be 62-64%. The overall range for a 7/10 track for me would be 65-74%.
How would 10/10 tracks work for you, then? For me I think of a 10/10 track as 95%+, but going on your other ratings for you that would be a solid 9/10.

Hey Piran! I love seeing '7 rings' debut at #1 as expected, though I definitely didn't expect it to do quite this well! It's crazy that Ariana beat the streaming record yet again, for the 2nd time in around 2 months! What I find even crazier, though, is that Ed Sheeran still holds both of the Top 2 highest weekly streaming figures in terms of pure audio streams, with 14.2m for 'Shape of You' and 11.07m for 'Castle on the Hill', over 2 years after their release! Even on its 10th week at #1 'Shape of You' would still be in the lead, as it was streamed 11.4m times that week. 3rd is also still held by 'Despacito (Remix)' with 10.6m, while '7 rings' gets roughly 10m this week to beat her own 'thank u, next's 9.76m to 4th place. If YouTube had been included when 'Shape of You' was released, I think we'd still be waiting for a track to beat it to this day.
For me, '7 rings' would be a strong 8/10, a very good rating but far from my favourite of Ariana's tracks. 'Don't Call Me Up' is pretty similar with a solid-strong 8/10, so I hope that can avoid peaking at #11 like 'Fine Line' and actually break into the Top 10, while 'Psych Out!' would be a solid-strong 7/10 for me.
I think 'The Greatest Showman' will get 2 more weeks at #1, since there's nothing that could really compete with it, but when 'thank u, next' comes out on 8th February (supposedly) it should hold it off for a few weeks at least.
Next week it looks like 'MIDDLE CHILD' will be making a Top 10 debut, #6 on Spotify and #18 on Apple Music, and climbing on both, while 'Swan Song' should also make a Top 40 debut.

Hey Gameskiller! :)
Yeah, even though it doesn't seem like a lot of people on this thread agree with us, I'm mostly happy with '7 Rings' debuting at #1! Like you, I knew it would get the top spot, but I didn't think it would break an all-time streaming record. In terms of quality, it's better than 'Imagine' in my opinion, but not as good as 'Thank U, Next'.
Given that 'Shape Of You' recently passed the 4 billion views milestone on YouTube, becoming the first ever English song to do that & the second song ever after 'Despacito' to do it. The latter of which should be due to hit 6 billion views within the next week or two.
Ed Sheeran also became the first ever British artist to have multiple Diamond singles in the US, as the RIAA recently recertified 'Shape Of You' to 10x platinum (10x Platinum = Diamond in America), which 'Thinking Out Loud' had also previous achieved.
It seems you liked all three Top 40 arrivals more than I did this week & regarding your album chart predictions, I honestly think 'The Greatest Showman' could end up getting more time at #1 after the hype for 'Thank U, Next' fades. Apparently, Hugh Jackman hinted a sequel to it earlier in the week, which would be awesome to watch if that happened!
I haven't heard 'Middle Child' yet, but I love 'Swan Song' as my chart predictions for next week show! What do you think of both of these songs?

10/10s for me are literally songs that I would give either 99% or 100% to. In other words, there has to be nothing in the song that I can't criticise even in the slightest. That's why I rarely give a perfect score out to hits & that's why 'Castle On The Hill' was probably the last Top 40 hit that would get that score for me & maybe at one point 'Shallow' would've too.
