Honestly it's a relief to read some of these comments, I'm glad it's not just me. The lyrics in that Kanye song are absolutely vile. In fact have you noticed there is a lot of very explicit and often misogynistic language in pop songs nowadays? This is what kids listen to unauthorised. Scary! And yes, streaming has ruined the charts. Any old dross gets in now

In terms of uplifting popular music, the chart is dead. The Kanye West song has lyrics: "I love it, you're such a f'king ."

Pathetic.

It's so sad what has happened to the chart since streaming took over. All this urban rap with hateful lyrics. Desperately sad. Millions of streamers have zero taste. They crave hateful songs. I dunno whether to laugh or cry at the state of the chart and the debased musical taste of so many streamers. Streaming destroyed the quality of chart music and that is unforgivable.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- 'Promises' by Calvin Harris & Sam Smith is #1 on the singles chart for a second week in a row. With 63,000 combined sales (sales & streaming), it has an 8,000 combined sales lead over its nearest challenger.

- ‘Promises’ by Calvin Harris & Sam Smith is also #1 on the airplay chart for a third consecutive week.

- ‘Remedy’ by Alesso debuts at #1 on the national YouTube chart with 3.88 million views in the past seven days.

- KANYE WEST & LIL PUMP – I LOVE IT (#3)
I don’t imagine anybody expected this to debut as high as it did, even if it was huge across a majority of streaming services this week, it didn’t have much in the way of sales. It’s also incredible to think that this is Kanye’s highest charting position in the UK since February 2015! Unfortunately, this is definitely among one of his more ridiculous hits, like how him & Lil Pump deliver some incredibly disgusting & explicit lyrics, which I might as well not quote here as Disqus would delete the comment for inappropriate words, so just look that up (or you’re just better off not knowing). The bass beats do bring some sense of groove to this that makes the production addictive, but even that can’t make up for the auto-tuned vocals & Kanye’s sick state of mind. In other words, 2/10, I hope this drops down the chart fast!

- SILK CITY & DUA LIPA FT DIPLO & MARK RONSON – ELECTRICITY (#15)
This might’ve got off to just a decent start, but I think it has potential to be absolutely massive in the coming weeks! The house pianos warm & in Diplo’s familiar style, which bounce through Dua Lipa’s husky vocals. There’s no doubt she sounds incredible by the way, although I kind of wish her voice didn’t get auto-tuned in the second half of the hook. That’s really my only criticism of the song though, as I like how the content describes love as an inner electricity & the comparison between them. Also, Mark Ronson does an excellent job closing out the song with his signature groovy & funky instrumentation. Again, we could have at least a Top 5 in the making here, maybe even a #1! I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t. So yeah, very strong 9/10 here!

- MACHINE GUN KELLY – RAP DEVIL (#31)
I really liked this way more than I expected to! Even though MGK did technically start with feud with Eminem about a certain tweet he made in 2012, his response/diss track to Em is actually not that bad at all. Obviously, MGK doesn’t quite match the complexity of the flows that Eminem can, but at least he’s bringing both more attitude & better punchlines than there were on ‘Revival’. However, despite the production being menacing to match the content of the song, it’s not all that memorable to be honest. Overall, probably a strong 6/10 from me!

- On the albums chart, ‘Kamikaze’ by Eminem remains at #1 for a second consecutive week. It was both the most downloaded & most streamed album of the week. Also, three tracks from it remain inside the Top 10 of the singles chart for a second straight week.

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack (3-2), ‘Egypt Station’ by Paul McCartney (debuts at #3), ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’ soundtrack (2-4) & ‘Sweetener’ by Ariana Grande (4-5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Sincerity Is Scary’ by The 1975, ‘Just Got Paid’ by Sigala, Ella Eyre & Meghan Trainor ft French Montana, ‘GTFO’ by Mariah Carey, 'Happy Now' by Zedd & Elley Duhe, 'Goodbye' by Jason Derulo & David Guetta ft Nicki Minaj & William, ‘Wake Up In The Sky’ by Gucci Mane x Bruno Mars x Kodak Black & maybe even more.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hey Piran! I love seeing 'Promises' stay at #1 for another week, as well as 'Eastside' staying at #2, 'Body' and 'Taste' reaching new peak inside the Top 5 and 'Happier' taking a big climb to #6. I really don't like the high debut for 'I Love It', though. I'm a massive fan of rap / hip-hop, but this song is just bad. Repetitive lyrics, bad rapping / singing and a bad beat. I didn't really have a least favourite song of 2018 before, but I think this is it now. 0/10 for me.

I love that the 3 Eminem tracks manage to stay in the Top 10, though! Since 'Emotionless' got swapped for 'In My Feelings' on 'Scorpion's 2nd week, I'm pretty sure that this is the first time that the 3 same songs from an album have stayed in the Top 10 for 2 weeks since '÷'! I do really like the debut for 'Electricity', and I hope that it reaches Top 10! I'd definitely like it if it could reach #1 as well! The climb for 'Be Alright' is great, too!

I quite like the debut for 'RAP DEVIL'. I'm a much bigger fan of Eminem than I am of MGK, but I do have to give MGK credit for actually having the courage to respond and actually making a pretty good diss track. That being said, with Eminem's response on 'KILLSHOT', I have to say that Eminem won this feud. As always Eminem brings fantastic flow and wordplay, though I'd say that he did a better job on most of the tracks from 'Kamikaze'. I still really like 'KILLSHOT', though, and while I do like 'RAP DEVIL', I think that 'KILLSHOT' is the better diss track of the two.

Sorry for not responding to your comments last week, by the way. I started back at college last week so I haven't really had much free time. You asked last week if a song exclusive to YouTube could debut, and if anything's going to do it it'll be 'KILLSHOT'. 'RAP DEVIL' appeared on other platforms this week, which is largely what propelled it into the Top 40, but 'KILLSHOT' is YouTube exclusive for now. With 36.2m views in 24 hours, I think that anywhere between 1.5m and 3m of those were from the UK. At the lower end of the spectrum that gives it 2.5k chart sales, and at the upper end that gives it 5k. For reference, 'LO(V/S)ER' debuted at #38 last week on chart sales of just under 10.5k (another interesting chart fact - over 10k of those sales were from streams, putting its actual sales figures literally in the hundreds). If it can get 6m total views from the UK over the course of the week, it should manage to reach the Top 40.

Hey Gameskiller! :)
I'm happy about 'Promises' staying at #1 too & I don't see anything that's close to taking it down for now.
I'm completely with you on 'I Love It'! The beat is catchy, but the lyrics are disgusting (they could only play seven seconds of it on the radio, even censored, on Friday) & both rappers bring poor flows.
'Killshot' isn't bad even though I've only heard it once, but as much as I'm an Eminem fan apart from 'Kamikaze', I have to say that I prefer 'Rap Devil' for now. I agree with you that MGK standing up to Eminem must take a lot of courage regardless!
That's fine, good luck with your studies for the upcoming academic year! I'm actually going into the final year of my Maths degree, so I'm not going to have as much time to comment over the next few months as I have recently, but I'll still post weekly reviews & personal charts here.
I'm actually surprised 'Remedy' by Alesso got #1 on YouTube this past week, given that it's nowhere to be seen in the Top 100 of the main chart.
Also, I'm not sure if 'Killshot' would debut this week if: 'Fall', 'Lucky You' & 'The Ringer' all keep their streaming inertia, as all three of those 'Kamikaze' tracks remained in the Top 10 for a second week, with 'Fall' gaining thanks to the video.

3.88m views on YouTube does only translate to just under 6.5k sales, and since it's not even in the weekly Top 200 on Spotify I think it was likely just outside of the Top 100 this week. I don't really get how it could be #1 on YouTube but nowhere to be seen on other platforms, though.
That's true, I didn't think of the other 3 Eminem tracks blocking 'KILLSHOT' from debuting. Unless it appears on other platforms and the other tracks fall a lot, it will likely be blocked. I think it would've debuted if it were able to, though.

The thing is with YouTube is that they update their charts on a Saturday for the UK, which is annoying considering everything else is revealed on a Friday. In the new chart, 'I Love It' unsurprisingly debuted at #1 with 4.66M views, hence why it did way better than predicted back on Monday.
Oh yeah, if that rule wasn't in place, no doubt most of 'Kamikaze' would be inside the Top 40 & all of it probably being the Top 75 last week.

Kworb has a UK section for YouTube, which is where I find daily figures, but it is usually anywhere from 2 - 5 days behind (currently the most recent chart is for 12/09/2018).
If every track from 'Kamikaze' was able to debut, the lowest position would've been 'Nice Guy' at #32 last week! I do have mixed feelings about that rule. On one had it manipulates the charts and doesn't show a true reflection of the most popular tracks, but on the other it stops album bombs from clogging up the chart and having half the chart be just from 1 artist. I do think that it should only apply to tracks from an album, rather than every track from an artist, though.

Piran

Do you mind sending me the link to that website? I just use this one: https://charts.youtube.com/charts/TopVideos/gb?hl=en-GB
Yeah, I also think a good rule would be that an artist can only chart official singles or album tracks if they have an official video (lyric videos or audios wouldn't be enough), but there's no limit as to how many songs they can have on the chart at the same time.
It's crazy how Eminem could've had 11 songs inside the Top 40 last week! If the rule didn't exist, 'Kamikaze' would have to be in the Top 5 biggest album bombs from streaming. What surprises me a lot is how he's been doing considerably better in the UK than in the US in the past few years.

avatar

Foxes

1

Yeah of course. I use a mix of the one that you sent and this one: https://kworb.net/youtube/insights/uk_daily.html The official one is obviously the best way to check the views for a whole week, but Kworb's charts are good to see how things are going on a day-by-day basis.
I think that 'Kamikaze' could've been the 3rd biggest album bomb. '÷' will undoubtedly be the biggest album bomb probably for the rest of time (even if the rule gets removed), and I think that 'Scorpion' would be #2 and 'Kamikaze' at #3. 'More Life' would be #4 and 'beerbongs & bentleys' would probably be #5.
'Kamikaze' did do a lot better than 'Revival' for Eminem in the US, with 434k chart sales compared to 267k, which is especially good for a surprise release. In contrast, 'Kamikaze' did 55k in the UK compared to 132k for 'Revival', though 'Revival' was released in the Christmas season and had strong physical sales, while 'Kamikaze' didn't even have a physical release.

Piran

Thanks, looks like 'I Love It' could be on course for a second week at #1 on YouTube in the UK. Worldwide, it got 76 million views in its first week, which is the most among a hip-hop/rap song apparently.
The most interesting thing about the chart you sent me is that there is a German remix of 'I Like It' at #20 currently. I can't remember the last time we had German language artists crossover onto the British charts, but that would be cool!
Ed Sheeran's definitely going to have the record maybe forever, unless his next album happens to be even bigger & they did remove the rule. I think 'Kamikaze' is going to have several moderate sixed hits, instead of one major hit & nothing else unlike on 'Revival' (with 'River' of course).

Foxes

I doubt that 'I Love It' will make a 2nd week at #1 on YouTube with 'KILLSHOT' dominating at the moment. 'KILLSHOT' was released late on the 14th, while that chart is only for the 12th. It's currently at 52m views after just 2 days, which is the same as the music video for 'Fall' which was released over a week ago, and is over half of what 'I Love It' has, which was also released over a week ago. 'KILLSHOT' should also beat that record set by 'I Love It', since I'd be surprised if it couldn't manage another 24m views over the next 5 days.
I don't think even Ed's next album will manage to beat '÷'. His next project is supposed to be an EP similar to 'No. 5 Collaborations Project', which I think will break the record as the fastest selling EP ever and probably debut in the 100k - 200k range, but nowhere near '÷'. Then he's also stated that his next full album will be an acoustic record and that he doesn't think it'll come close to '÷' in terms of sales either, so that'll probably be in the 300k - 400k range.
Yeah, at the moment 'Fall' and 'Lucky You' are doing very well from 'Kamikaze', and it's already got 3 Top 10 hits, which is 1 more than 'Revival' ever managed to get in the Top 10 (it had 'Walk On Water' at #7, though it fell quickly, 'River' at #1 which was a major hit, and 'In Your Head' at #19 which also fell quickly). If another track gets released as a single I'd say that it'll probably be either 'Not Alike' or 'Venom', and when the movie releases it could give 'Venom' a big boost as well.

avatar

Piran

I think the main reason that 'River' was so huge is because Ed Sheeran just had an incredible run of time at #1 ('Shape Of You' & 'Perfect) or #2 ('Castle On The Hill', 'Galway Girl' & 'How Would You Feel [Paean]').
If 'Killshot' has managed 52 million views in the first three days in the UK, I imagine it would indeed pass 'I Love It'. The difference is that the latter was also big on Spotify & Apple Music, which probably gave it a #3 debut overall.
Oh yeah, I remember Ed Sheeran did say he wanted to do a more experimental & less mainstream project for his next release. Given all the records he broke worldwide with '÷', I don't blame him.
What's surprising is that 'Kamikaze' might not get a second week at #1 on the US albums chart (the Billboard 200) since Paul McCartney is apparently set to gather the sales to give him his first #1 album there in 36 years!

avatar

Foxes

1

Yeah, Ed definitely carried 'River' to #1. Having 6 Top 2 singles, including a 14-week #1, a 6-week #1 and a 1-week #1 as a featured artist, and the fact that all of the #2 singles were only held from #1 by Ed himself, and that 2 of them jointly hold the record for the longest consecutive run at #2 behind a song by the same artist is absolutely incredible, especially considering that it was all within the space of just over 1 year.
Without 'KILLSHOT' being available on other platforms, it probably won't manage to debut above his 3 existing hits. It might debut on other platforms later, like 'RAP DEVIL', which could help it to debut, probably pushing 'The Ringer' out of the chart if it continues to fall.
Since Ed's next EP is supposed to include a lot of grime artists I can see it doing very well on streaming, though not as well as '÷', and since it's Ed it will probably do very well on sales as well. The album after that I think will do incredibly well on sales, but since it's supposed to be more acoustic I don't think it'll do as well on streaming.
That's insane! I never would've thought that Paul McCartney would be beating Eminem in 2018, especially not in the US!

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, there were actually multiple times where Ed replaced himself at #1 on the sales chart.
What will hurt 'Killshot' is it doesn't have the sales, even if downloads count so little towards the chart now. Ed's next album should get three Top 10 debuts & I think it could also match 'Scorpion's record & get three Top 5s after the new chart rules were introduced.
I know, right?! It appears that 'Egypt Station' could debut in the US with 145k copies between sales & streaming tonight according to HDD's predictions, while 'Kamikaze' should have a second week figure of around 126k (down 69% from last week's debut).

avatar

Foxes

1

To be honest I wouldn't even be surprised if Ed's next EP takes up the entire Top 3 on release. Ed Sheeran + grime artists is basically the perfect formula for streaming, which is what powers tracks the most nowadays, especially album tracks. The album after will probably get better sales but worse streams, but should still at the very least get 3 Top 10s.
I'm surprised at the drop for 'Kamikaze' in the US. It only dropped 35% here, and stayed very strong on both sales and streams.

avatar

Piran

1

Neither would I really. If he drops the EP on surprise, he could take the record for first artist to debut at: #1, #2 & #3 simultaneously. He already got the record for being the first & only artist to debut at #1 & #2 at the same time.
In terms of population ratio, 'Kamikaze' had a better debut in the US than in the UK, but #1 albums there tend to be frontloaded unless they have streaming behind them. It's possible that 'Kamikaze' could remain in the Top 10 for most of the remainder of the year in the US, but I don't know about it going back to #1 there.

avatar

Foxes

1

He might not even have to release it on surprise. Just as long as he doesn't release anything from it beforehand. Or if 3 new songs from the album are more popular than the existing single(s). Given that it's just an EP and not a studio album, I think that there's actually a pretty high chance that he won't even release a single from it at all, and especially not beforehand.
'Kamikaze' should be getting a 3rd week at #1 next week since it's still by far the biggest on streams and is still the biggest on digital sales, and it's actually got a physical release now which was #2 on the physical chart this week. If it does, it'll make it Eminem's longest consecutive #1 album on release since 'Curtain Call' in 2005 / 2006 and 'The Eminem Show' in 2002, both of which spent 5 consecutive weeks at #1 on release. 'Recovery' did get 7 non-consecutive weeks in 2010, including 3 consecutive weeks, but that was on its 2nd run at #1.

avatar

Piran

1

True, although I wouldn't imagine three of the album tracks to be stronger than singles that were already released from it beforehand, one or two maybe.
I wonder if we'll ever get an Eminem single that spends more than one week at #1. It's hard to think we haven't already.

avatar

Foxes

4

I doubt that 'Kamikaze' will yield a #1 single, so I'm really not sure if we ever will. We could get a massive hit from his next album that spends multiple weeks at #1, he could get a 10th 1-week #1 or he could never get a #1 again. It really depends massively on how much longer he can stay popular. It doesn't look like he'll be going away any time soon, but things can change.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, if anything, he got the record for most consecutive #1 albums. It's impressive considering he
doesn't really promote his singles nor his albums much anymore, although it's looking like 'Fall' will end up being the biggest single from 'Kamikaze' though. That said, even though it's not part of the album, 'Killshot' has potential to be even more successful if it was released to all streaming platforms & got an official video instead of an audio.
