Rather than just moan at the current state of the streaming/combined sales top 100, I thought I'd offer some ideas how to improve the chart.

1) No artist/group can have more than song in the top 100 at any given time. This rule is to provide opportunity to all artists/groups.

2) All top 100 singles are subject to a chart time limit: 16 weeks maximum. After that period the song cannot be counted as a stream, download or physical single. It drops out of the top 100.

3) Any song dropping out of the top 100 can not re-enter the top 100.

4) The only exception to the 16 weeks limit would be during December - the Christmas period, Any former chart hit can re-enter the chart for that one month.

5) Artist/groups are permitted to release a follow-up single every 17 weeks. This allows rule 1 to be enforced.

6) All steaming sites affiliated to the Official Chart will abide by the above rules. If a streaming site refuses to accept the rules their streams will not be counted as part of the Official Chart.

A 16 weeks limit is a radical suggestion but it means all chart eligible singles have a four month lifespan. Streaming allows songs to hang about for months and months thereby reducing the amount of new entries per week and reducing movement in the chart so I think a time limit is necessary. And let's face it - does any music fan need to stream a song for four months? 16 weeks is more than enough time for any streaming 'hit'.

You can still stream the song if you want. It won't be classified as eligible for the chart. If you want to stream your fave songs for months and months no-one will stop you.:)

How can this be fair! According to today's Sun newspaper Ed Sheeran's "Shape of you" downloads and streams are to be combined with the sales and streams of "Stormzy's" version. Maybe Rag 'n' Bone Man should run around and get half a dozen of his mates to quickly record "Human" so they can add all of them together too. Ridiculous! The charts just get more and more weird

Painmix - the rival UK top 40 - Big Top 40 - has the remix at number one! I've never seen a top ten chart with two versions of the song - the original and the remix! As suggested in my new post, the OCC (and the rival Big Top 40 too!) should introduce a one single per artist/group rule to stop this happening!

avatar

I can't stand how all the people here and the OCC are complicit in the downfall of the chart. Don't you think the OCC should contact the record labels and streaming sites and suggest:

"Hey, guys, how about we impose a ONE SINGLE rule on all artists? No-one can have more than ONE SONG eligible for the chart?"

Don't you think that might be a fairer system?!!!! I sure do. Why should album tracks be eligible for the top 40/100. Ed Sheeran has THREE of his yet-to-be-released album tracks in the chart! Pre-streaming you never had artists/groups allowed to release several singles at one time! That's why singles had B sides - it was to attract people to buy a single - you got a second song but the b side wasn't part of the chart.

It's outrageous how the chart has been exploited and ruined. And it's not just the official chart that's ruined - the rival Big Top 40 has Sheeran's remix of Shape of You at number one. A remix of a song already in the top ten is at number one! Incredible (and not in a good way).

The chart (due to the sales structure of streaming) seems rigged to support certain artists like Sheeran, Drake, Bieber etc. I think it's genuinely rigged to allow artists on bigger labels more chance. All you lot do is just post about the virtual non-movement in the chart. Why not be less sheep-like and urge major change to chart? It's tragic to see the downfall of the chart. Not wishing to be unkind but the chart is unfit for purpose.

You've just read my mind completely! Ever since 2007, album tracks have been eligible to chart, I think it's absolutely outrageous!

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

Ups and Downs:

Ups:
Well, I guess Ed Sheeran being in 3/5ths of the top 5 is good.
Lots of bad/long-lasting songs dropped a lot (Don't Wanna Know, One Dance, You Want me and the list goes on)
The new Linkin Park song not entering the top 40, really doesn't deserve to
Stormzy not doing too well, but that will be subject to change next week with the album and Brits performances

Downs:
Shape of You #1... come on, someone take it off
24K Magic dropping ain't good, but I guess I consider that a long laster
Only two songs climbing... Skin and Safe Inside

Not a bad week at all then really, more ups and downs for once

100th comment!

So Text From Your Ex has gone from bad to meh to bad again in the space of three weeks?
I heard of a Major Lazer remix in these comments but considering their new own song is trash, I refuse to check it out

Haha! Sunshine Gal & I usually race against each other to see who can be the first comment. :P LOL
Yeah, I would give 'Text From Your Ex' a 4/10, so that puts it as bad-meh. It'll probably continue to alternate between those two depending on my mood at the time I do ratings.

So Sia's latest gets to no 15 in sales and not in the top 40 and Lana del Rey 17 in sales and 41 in the chart and probably won't climb. Both sales and standard chart positions should be listed in any Wikipedia or discography

Shape Of You is still at number one (although How Would You Feel is at number one on sales).

Chained To The Rhythm probably has the best message out of the songs in the top 10 (and probably the whole top 100).

It Ain't Me entered at number 9, there's not much surprising about that.

Take That enter at 13 with their flop single Giants. I'm guessing that it will have a similar chart run to Perfect Illusion by Gaga.

Maroon 5 have released a generic pop single, which has entered at 32.

Bad Things is flying out of the chart.

Is Closer seriously still in the top 40? :(

A generic tropical house single called Solo Dance is in the top 40. It sounds the same as any tropical house song.

The top 40 is finally freed from Drake! Everyone party!

Mr Brightside is still in! :)

The most important part of the chart this week is, in my opinion, Drake no longer being in the top 40. I've waited for this day ever since One Dance got to number 1 last year!

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

Cold is infinitely better than Don't Wanna Know but I wish Maroon 5 would go back to being Maroon 5 instead of Adam Levine singing around generic electronic beats.

I agree with your thoughts on Solo Dance. That genre needs to sod off and stay with the only two artists capable of constantly spitting out good music of the genre - Kygo and Jonas Blue.

How on earth is Chained To The Rhythm the song in the top 100 with the bets message? It's literally just 'Yay, I love music, turn it louder!' It's VERY hard to say that has the best message in the 100 with the existence of the likes of Castle On The Hill, Mr Brightside and Treat You Better

The meaning of Chained To The Rhythm is that everyone is enjoying luxuries and remaining oblivious to wars, poverty etc.

yeah when i did my ed throwbacks several wks ago, he was right behind her *i gotta double check though*. but his album spent something like 11 mos. in the top 10 over here. hers spent 1 full yr in the top 10 :) making her the very 1st u.s. female artist to achieve that.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

well, his first album was a moderate hit, but the song 'thinking out loud' was a big hit here! he was stuck @ #2 for 8 straight wks and right behind 'uptown funk' which spent 14 straight #1 wks. are you a fan of sam smith? i plan to do some sam throwbacks in the near future.

Piran - Ed Sheeran is actually the 4th Act to have 3 simultaneous Singles, in the Top 5 of
the UK Singles Chart. You missed out Frankie Laine, who achieved it, for 4 consecutive
Weeks, in October & November 1953. Justin Bieber did it, for 9 Weeks, in 2015 to 2016.
John Lennon did it, for 2 Weeks, in 1981. If Ed can manage 4 simultaneous Top 10 Singles,
in next Week's Chart, he will be only the 2nd Act to do that. Frankie Laine had 4, at the same
time, in 1953 - for 3 Weeks. Of course, if Ed ever manages 5 UK Top 10 Singles, in the same
Chart, then that will be the 1st time that anyone has ever achieved that.

avatar

Piran

Thanks for telling me about that. Sorry I forgot to include it, but I'll edit that into my review right now. :)

avatar

You can't compare the 2 instances i.e Frankie Laine's achievement and anyone doing the same these days. Back in the 50's until early 2000's the charts were compiled through sales. Now streaming is included it's acompletely different kettle of fish. When a record fell out of the chart it was deleted and it would be weeks before the next release fort hat artist so was almost impossible for anyone to have more than 2 records in the whole Top 40, never mind the Top 5

Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" remains at number 1 for a seventh straight week on the Official UK Singles Chart. Ed Sheeran became the first artist to have singles debut at number 1 and 2 simultaneously on January 13, 2017 with "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill". Sheeran performed both songs at the 37th edition of the Brit Awards on February 22, 2017, with the help of Stormzy who joined him on stage to perform "Shape of You". "How Would You Feel (PAEAN)" by Ed Sheeran debuts at number 2 this week. Ed Sheeran now has three songs in the Top 5.

"Chained to the Rhythm" by Katy Perry (feat Skip Marley) rises to number 5 this week.

"Big For Your Boots" by Stormzy falls to number 17 this week. Stormzy's debut studio album "Gang Signs & Prayer" was released independently through #Merky Records today. The album has already received critical acclaim. There's a special feeling I get whenever I hear a classic album for the first time, and I had that feeling when I listened to this album yesterday.

"Something Just Like This" by Chainsmokers and Coldplay debuts at number 30. Coldplay invited Chainsmokers to perform the song with them on stage at the 37th edition of the Brit Awards, which were held at the O2 Arena in London on February 22, 2017. It was a lit performance.

"Mr. Brightside" by The Killers (currently at number 85) has now been in the Top 100 for a combined total of 161 weeks. The current record for the most weeks in the chart by a single is held by Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" which remained in the Top 100 for 166 weeks. So The Killers are only six weeks away from breaking the record.

Sunshine Gal

dang, 7 straight wks!! over here, the longest #1 run for a male uk act is elton john's 'candle in the wind' @ 14 wks. so, do you think he's bigger in the u.s. or in the uk?

G

Gail

1

I feel like the charts are definitely starting to return back to the way they were! As more top 10 debuts have occurred! Ed Sheeran debuted at No. 1&2 in January whilst three more songs climbed to the top 10 that week, "Paris" debuted in the top 10, so did "Big for Your Boots" and "Chained to the Rhythm" last week. And now Both Kygo and Ed Sheeran debut in the top 10 this week!!

SH

Scott Harris

1

And yet "Shape of You" is still #1 which is probably the only thing that hasn't changed on the charts. The top spot is still not as easy to grab like it used to.

G

Gail

0

Very much agree, but it's a start! One thing that annoys me is album tracks charting, but when Ed Sheeran'a album is released most of the top 20 will probably be his album tracks the following week. I don't mind singles, promotional singles, or radio singles it's just album tracks. They drive me mad. Can't believe this is still No. 1!!!

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…
- ‘Shape Of You’ by Ed Sheeran has now spent seven consecutive weeks at #1 on the singles chart. As a result, it ties ‘Uptown Funk’ by Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars as the longest #1 of the decade by a British solo artist. I knew many people last year were really anticipating an Ed Sheeran comeback, but I didn’t think he would become this big across the world with the lead single from ‘÷’. The album will be released next Friday & I’m looking forward to checking it out.
- ‘Shape Of You’ is no longer leading every category though; it still has a big lead on streaming & is back atop the airplay charts, but it wasn’t the best-selling song in the country this week. Following Wednesday night’s BRIT awards (which have already impacted on this week’s Top 40), there is now a remixed version of this song with Stormzy. I’ve never been a big fan of the rapper, but I loved their performance! My guess would be that the remixed version would chart separately next week rather than count towards the original.
- Yet again, Ed Sheeran has blocked himself from the top. However, ‘How Would You Feel [Paean]’ is the highest debut of the week, entering the Official Charts at #2 today (but #1 on the sales chart). This sees Ed go back to his acoustic sound by releasing another good ballad; I especially love the piano line & the guitars in this, but it can start to get a bit boring towards the end of the song. Overall, I’m happy that it entered so high as it did, especially considering it’s only a promotional single for his album & not an official one.
- Along with ‘Castle On The Hill’ at #4 this week, Ed Sheeran has three songs in the Top 5 this week. Just three other artists have done this before; Frankie Laine in 1953, John Lennon in 1981 & Justin Bieber in 2015.
- This week saw four more new songs enter the Top 40. Firstly, we have ‘It Ain’t Me’ by Kygo & Selena Gomez debuting at #9. I honestly think Selena Gomez is underrated in the UK & deserves more success here; her vocals impress me a lot in this, even though they do get slightly strained in her upper range at the end of the choruses. The vocal loop works really well in the drop though & Kygo really builds the song well up to that beat break. I know I’m slightly biased to this because I like both artists, but it’s a great song regardless & I’m very pleased to see it become the second Top 10 for Kygo & third for Selena Gomez.
- Only a couple of days after release, The Chainsmokers & Coldplay already enter the Top 40. ‘Something Just Like This’ might be at #30 now, but it has huge potential to get to #1 for next week. This seems an unlikely collaboration & I didn’t think it would work at all, but I was proven completely wrong because this is awesome! If you’ve heard ‘Roses’, then the instrumentation is very similar to that song from The Chainsmokers. The lyrics are thoughtful too; with Chris Martin saying that he’s not asking for a superhero but simply somebody to turn to & be there for them. Most of my favourite songs of 2017 so far have took a couple of listens to grow on me, but I loved this one at first listen.
- The next debut of the week is ‘Giants’ by Take That, beginning its chart run at #13. The band have had an incredible 12 #1s & now 28 Top 40s! Each of the members here have a broad vocal range, but my favourite part of this is the harmonies. It doesn’t at all compare to their 00s music, but I’m still very happy to see them back on the charts. It’s also amazing how this year will Take That’s 25th anniversary as a group.
- ‘Cold’ enters today at #32 & gives Maroon 5 19 Top 40s in the UK now. It’s also Future’s first ever visit to the Top 40. It’s not dull & forgettable like ‘Don’t Wanna Know’ was, but it’s not much of an improvement to be honest. Future sounds a lot better than usual, he’s not mumbling in his parts or sounding lifeless this time, but there’s nothing to this song that is making me interested in any way. I’m not saying it’s a bad song at all, but I probably won’t remember it within a month or two from now.
- The fifth & final new arrival is ‘Solo Dance’ by Martin Jensen at #40. This is his first Top 40 appearance in the UK, but this has already been a Top 10 hit in: Norway, Sweden & Denmark. The message here that is that you can still have a good time & party even if you’re by yourself & the uplifting mood comes especially from the drop. It’s not the best dance song in the charts right now, the vocals are fine but don’t really stand out that well in the verses, although I can easily support this & having seen it slowly climb the charts for weeks now, I’m alright seeing it in the Top 40.
- ‘Ciao Adios’ by Anne-Marie is the biggest climber of the week, rising 40-21. The song grew on me a lot since last Friday & it’s likely to hit the Top 20 next week, maybe even the Top 10.
- As for the albums chart, ‘Human’ by Rag’n’Bone Man remains at #1 for a second week. The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Under Stars’ by Amy Macdonald (debuts at #2), ‘Prisoner’ by Ryan Adams (debuts at #3), ‘x’ by Ed Sheeran (7-4) & ‘25’ by Adele (6-5).
- On a final note, I really enjoyed the BRIT awards this week, especially the performances from: The Chainsmokers & Coldplay, Little Mix & Bruno Mars. Congratulations to all of the winners too! The BRITs will have an even bigger effect on the Top 40 next Friday. As well as climbers from performers & winners, we might get Top 40 debuts for: ‘Shape Of You’ by Ed Sheeran [Stormzy Remix]’, ’Slide’ by Calvin Harris ft Frank Ocean & Migos, 'That's What I Like' by Bruno Mars & ‘Swalla’ by Jason Derulo ft Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign.
- Wow… this was a busy week! Thanks to all for reading & enjoy the rest of your week. :)

I was wondering how the Official Charts would handle remixes vs. original songs in the chart. Also, it should be noted that under the Top 20 there was a bit more movement than there had been in the last 3 weeks or so, with some of the older songs finally starting to make way for the newer ones. ;)

G

Gail

2

Very interesting review! What gives you the impression which Ed Sheeran and Stormzy will debut separately next week? Any thoughts would be very intriguing to me, thank you : )

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I noticed the biggest climbers in this week's Top 40 were only four places & now we get one that climbed 21! :D
Well when AlunaGeorge charted with 'You Know You Like It' & DJ Snake remixed it, different versions charted. That was the same for 'Bad Blood' by Taylor Swift if I recall correctly. So that's why my current guess it that 'Shape Of You [Stormzy Remix]' will count as a debut next week.

avatar

Piran

0

Hey Gail! Thanks for the comment. :)
Well I'm not entirely sure about that, but I just think that because another artist has been added to 'Shape Of You', it won't count towards the original's performance.
Also, I recall songs from earlier this decade like 'You Know You Like It' & 'Bad Blood' charting with different versions because of the remixes. We'll see what happens next week though!
Speaking of which, what are your thoughts on the current #1?

avatar

Techfan

1

Regarding the latter, not quite a remix but the only different
version of a song that charted at the same time as the original was
Unchained Melody. The newer version was named Unchained Melody 1990 to
differentiate it from the original. Actual remixes if the become popular
enough become the main version, with all versions of the songs counting
toward it in the Hot 100, such as was the case with Cruise. ;)

G

Gail

2

"Cheap Thrills" by Sia and "The Greatest" also by Sia, both singles charted from album and featured artist single versions but they were combined. So was "Move Your Body" (again by Sia) which she released a single mix for this single. Thank u for replying.

avatar

Piran

1

Oh yeah, 'Cruise' is another good example!
On the other hand, there's 'Hymn For The Weekend', which only had one version on the charts despite eventually being remixed by SeeB. I'm interested to see whether or not the Stormzy remix of 'Shape Of You' will be eligible to chart, as well as if The Chainsmokers & Coldplay can get enough streaming to climb to #1 next Friday. :)

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, I heard both of those songs in 'Shape Of You', especially at the start. I also notice a similarity to 'No Scrubs' by TLC in the pre-chorus, but I really like the song in general! :)
You're welcome! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I never noticed that; but Kendrick Lamar & Sean Paul were never credited on those songs on the Official Chart archives. In which case, then 'Shape Of You' will also be combined & is much more likely to be staying at #1 than I first thought.

avatar

Techfan

1

Another recent one that I just forgot about was Olivia O'Brien's version called hate u love u, that charted separately from the original version where she was the featured artist. ;)

avatar

Piran

1

Well another commenter replied to me saying that Sia's latest hits have only charted as album tracks & that the remixes didn't appear on the Official Charts separately.
If we get the case where both the original & the remix of 'Shape Of You' are combined, then that will mean there is a much less chance of 'Something Just Like This' climbing to #1 next week.

avatar

Techfan

1

Although the cases in which the remix version is the most popular right from the start are rare. I don't think most people would know that I Took a Pill in Ibiza was originally an acoustic ballad, for example. ;)

We'll see how the Official Charts handles the remix next week, given that there seems to be some inconsistency in how they done it in the past.

avatar

Piran

1

I still haven't heard the original of 'I Took A Pill In Ibiza'; only when Mike Posner did a live version of it at the V Festival.
In a way, I want the two versions of 'Shape Of You' to chart separately just so that 'Something Just Like This' has a bigger chance at #1 next week.
I've just found out that there is actually a third version of it that's been released; with Major Lazer! ;)

avatar

Techfan

1

Regarding the last thing, they posted an article about it at Billboard. ;)

avatar

Piran

1

Awesome! I'll check out that article. :)
Have you heard either of the remixes yet & if so, what did you think of them in comparison to the original?

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey what's up mate, sorry i'm late to this party :D so, will lm move higher on the chart due to the brit awards?

avatar

Piran

1

'Shout Out To My Ex' might get a rebound thanks to winning Best British Single, but I don't see anything else happening other than that. Stormzy just released his debut album, so I think we'll see lots of debuts from him lower down in the Top 100.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

so unlike the grammys, the brit awards have no bearing on the uk music charts and music sales? almost always, as far back as i can recall *the 1984 grammys is the 1st grammy show i can recall watching* any notable wins, usually that artist did much better in sales and on the bb charts. you should've seen the hot 100 the year the dixie chicks won their 5 awards, incl. album of the year :)

avatar

Piran

1

No, the BRITs will definitely have a huge effect on the charts for next week (they already have this week), but I just don't see 'Shout Out To My Ex' getting a huge boost due to the Stormzy album & other new songs taking big climbs next week.

avatar

Techfan

1

Not yet. Maybe I'll listen to them later ... :)

avatar

Piran

1

The Stormzy one is decent, but not as good as the original. I still need to check out the Major Lazer remix though! I wonder if both of those versions will appear on the deluxe version of '÷'... ;)

avatar

They got two #1 albums with 'Hysteria' & 'Adrenalize', but no #1 singles.
On the singles chart, they had three Top 10s. Of those, both 'Let's Get Rocked' & 'When Love & Hate Collide' both peaked at #2.
So in general, they weren't massive here, but still fairly successful! ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

are you serious! :0 cuz def leppard was big here in 1988. their 'pyromania' album went diamond, but i vaguely recall them on mtv during that time. they were more successful on the bb rock singles chart. their 'hysteria' album is what broke them into the mainstream level here...that album went 12x plat. :) and over here, i think they have 1 #1 'love bites.'

avatar

Piran

1

'Love Bites' just missed the Top 10 over here; I think it got to #11. How long was that #1 for in the US then?
Anyway, I'm signing off now, but have a good weekend & I'll chat to you again soon! ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

it looks like it was #1 for 1 week. have you ever heard it? well, you will in a sec ;) ok mate, i'll talk to catch your ar$e later :P

avatar

Techfan

2

Another thing I just realized is that B&B fell quite a bit this week ... so it seems it'll fade quicker in the UK than in the US. ;)

avatar

Techfan

1

So, I listened to them both. I would assess the Stormy one as you did, the Major Lazer one is a bit too unrecognizable for me, but I guess that's the type of remix that could easily top Dance Club songs.

avatar

yianang

2

It all depends on the single's catalogue number: if the record company decides to release the new version with a different catalogue number, it will chart independently. If not, its sales will be added to the original.

avatar

Techfan

1

Talking about Sia, I just realized by looking of one of those Singles chart weekly videos that 3 of her songs are back to back to back in the chart. Ed might have accomplished that as well this week but Human got in the way of that. ;)

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

Great! I just heard it and because I was watching on TV, 85% of the song was just the beat because of the amount of swear words in it.

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

It should count towards SOY's performance, they always do. Cheap Thrills is an obvious example

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

Wait, You Know You Like It actually charted?

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

2

I heard Calvin Harris' new song a couple of days ago on the radio and it's so bad I nearly cried. Next to School (an instrumental track on 18 Months), it has to be his worst song to date. Bad sound change, zero substance, completely undanceable and extremely boring. Sounds like the sort of thing Tory Lanez would make

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

2

The only time I can think of a remix charting separately is the Lay Me Down charity version

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

Oh yeah, the SeeB remix of Hymn For The Weekend, horrible... Just sounds like a bunch of noise. Same for Stitches, just remix a song that is bland AF, that's partially why the I Took a Pill in Ibiza remix was so good

avatar

Techfan

1

So, I have nicknamed the song Bad & Worser as a consequence ... ;)

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Techfan! I'm back. :)
Well nobody appears to be buying the song anymore (why would they? LOL), especially not in the UK, so I expect it to fall out of the Top 40 next week.

avatar

Piran

1

I think judging by the response of other commenters, the Stormzy remix of 'Shape Of You' & the original version will be combined. That would give it an even bigger lead in both sales & streaming for next week. It looks like 'Something Just Like This' will climb to #2 though! ;)
I also expect a rebound for 'Big For Your Boots' next Friday due to the release of Stormzy's debut album; it was #2 on UK Spotify today.

avatar

Piran

1

Interesting. I think judging by the streaming figures of the original version of 'Shape Of You', that will be the #1 again next week whatever happens. What do you think of the song then? :)

avatar

Piran

1

Well you probably remember JB occupying the Top 3 spots in the Official Charts last January, which nobody had done before in the history of the charts. That's the last time I can think of when an artist charted in three consecutive positions.
I believe J Cole managed to get four consecutive positions on the Hot 100 in the week that '4 Your Eyez Only' was released & its album tracks invaded the US charts! ;)

avatar

Piran

0

Well I'm looking at the Official Chart archives right now & it has the original 'You Know You Like It' re-entering & peaking at #39 on the 04/08/2013 dated chart. Then, on 04/09/2015, the DJ Snake remix of it debuts & peaks at #67. The latter did far better internationally though.

avatar

Piran

2

I just heard it for the first time & your thoughts almost completely sum it up perfectly.
Everything about is completely forgettable; the bland beat & generic rapping. How on earth is this meant to be considered a dance song? -_-

avatar

Piran

0

That was with John Legend as a feature if I remember correctly.
Well the general response from commenters so far is that both the remix & the original of 'Shape Of You' will be combined, meaning that the song will very likely stay at #1 this Friday.
I'm actually quite disappointed with that; I don't dislike 'Shape Of You', but it means that Coldplay are going to be blocked from their third #1. :(

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, the original 'Hymn For The Weekend' was far better. I still never understand why Beyoncé wasn't credited as a featured artist though...
'I Took A Pill In Ibiza' was initially acoustic guitar based, so it really needed that remix!

avatar

Techfan

1

J. Cole actually debuted with songs at 21-24 in the Hot 100. Did you hear Ed Sheeran did just that this week for the Top 3 for Australia? ;)

avatar

Techfan

1

That seems the case for BFYB. So, I actually saw the 2016 Year-End for the OC Singles this week and heard Stormzy's song that made it. It sounded more acceptable. :)

avatar

Techfan

1

Thankfully, so! ;) So I see England crushed Italy's team ... you must be quite happy. So when's England's next game?

avatar

Piran

0

That's awesome for Ed! I think when '÷' is released, he might have a chance to do that in the UK too! :)
Do you know if that's the first time an artist has taken the Top 3 spots in the same week in the ARIA charts then?

avatar

Piran

0

I wonder if 'Big For Your Boots' will be in the Top 100 songs of 2017.
Also, OCC should post predictions tomorrow for when they think Stormzy's debut album will chart on Friday.

avatar

Piran

1

Well England didn't do very well in the first half at all & were actually losing 5-10 at that time. I'm pleased with how England did in the second half though & that's what got it to 36-15 at full time! ;)
It's England vs Scotland next weekend, of which England should win. The really difficult game for them is going to be against Ireland the following weekend though.

avatar

Techfan

1

Yes, the Irish are tough! So anyway, Barcelona managed to win towards the end of the game and Real Madrid came back from 2-0 to win. So unfortunately, my team didn't make up any ground but remained in the hunt for La Liga championship.

avatar

Piran

1

Well it's good to hear that your football team are generally doing alright.
So have you been watching the Oscars tonight? :)

avatar

Techfan

1

No. I think it'll just watch the musical performances tomorrow! ;)

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

Haha true. I remember every time either Stitches or HFTW came on the radio I was like 'Oh yes! Oh no, it's the horrible remix, F.T.S!'

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

If Beyonce was credited it would have been even more successful.

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

But at least Chainsmokers won't get their second #1. My vendetta against them is fading, but they don't deserve it.

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

Also SOMETHING needs to take SOY off, considering How Would You Feel is now #1 on the sales chart SOY's time is probably coming to an end

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

And SOY doesn't deserve more #1 weeks than Uptown Funk

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

2

Because by chart logic, as long as a song is by a DJ it counts as dance. When's the last time Linkin Park have topped the dance charts then? FML.

On the subject of Linkin Park, I'd just recovered on the shock of their new song, just to get even more thrown off my Calvin Harris' new song. Burn those songs down this summer! :P

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

I only know the song from Clubland 28 or whatever one it was on

avatar

yianang

1

Hey Piran! Sorry for the delay in answering; the link included in the email that I received with your answer transported me to an invalid page... Anyway, the song is good, but not the best of his three current hits, in my opinion. Still, a person who writes their own songs is always a good thing to behold at the top of the charts.

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

TBF though, as soon as you hear Migos is in it, you gotta have low expectations. While This Is What You Came For had a weak drop and My Way had a bad vocal performance, at least those songs are DECENT

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, I definitely agree with you there.
I don't mind 'Shape Of You', but so many other songs deserved at least seven weeks at #1 more. :/

avatar

Piran

0

'Slide' is definitely in the Top 3 worst Calvin Harris songs in my opinion, maybe even THE worst...
Yeah, I'm happy that 'Bad & Boujee' isn't doing anything much in the UK right now & appears to be fading fast now. Migos' latest album wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but I still wouldn't give it a recommendation.

avatar

Piran

1

That's fine! I hope your day is going well. :)
Yeah, I agree with you there. I would give 'Shape Of You' a 6/10 for now, 'Castle On The Hill' a 9/10 & 'How Would You Feel [Paean]' a 7/10. Ed Sheeran is generally is an incredible artist though, from: singing, song-writing & rapping, so it's good that he's back.

avatar

Techfan

1

Hey Piran! So they just posted an article about Ed having the Top 3 in Australia. Before that, Karise Eden, an Aussie The Voice winner, had 4 out of the Top 5 in 2012. And in 1964, The Beatles had all the Top 5. ;) Sadly, HWYF will have a lower debut in the Hot 100 this week.

BTW, in today's kworb Airplay update, both SoY and IDWLF had a much smaller increase in daily audience, which might signify each could reach a peak soon. LOTB also had a loss in audience even though its spins increased. Good thing B&B did the same as the latter as well. I hope that's its peak, finally. ;)

avatar

yianang

1

My day is going well, thank you, I hope yours is too. I agree with your grades, Castle On The Hill is my favorite of the three as well. There's no denyng the fact that the two true British international superstars of the 10s so far are Adele and Ed Sheeran.

avatar

Piran

0

A lot of people can't stand The Chainsmokers, but to the exception of '#selfie', I've loved all of their songs.

avatar

Piran

0

I agree! I'm happy for Ed Sheeran getting seven weeks at #1, but that's enough of 'Shape Of You' now. It doesn't look like it's going anywhere for a while yet though, as his album is released on Friday.
Now if 'Castle On The Hill' was #1 for seven weeks, then I wouldn't have any problem with that!

avatar

Piran

0

Hey Techfan! :)
So Ed Sheeran is only the third artist to do that? Fantastic! I'm really pleased for him.
If you're interested, I think the UK chart predictions might've posted now.

avatar

Piran

0

Thanks! Mine is as well. :)
So what are your most & least favourite songs in the Top 40 right now then?

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

I would eventually TBH, haha. But yeah his album release will basically permenate them

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

Lots of people on the internet hate them, but coz I'm a teen, I'm around people who are obsessed with them, which counter-influences my opinion in a way

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

His three worst singles are probably Slide, Acceptable in the 80's and The Girls (latter two from his last album, hated htem)

avatar

Piran

0

So did you see the Official Chart Update then?
To be honest, if it's correct, then this is going to be the worst chart week we've had in a few months. :/

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

I beg to differ, I can't think of many songs that could have a 7-week no.1 run without me getting bored

avatar

Piran

0

Well the main example I can think of is 'Hello' by Adele. I thought that would've lasted much longer at #1 than just three weeks.

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, Calvin's early music wasn't terrible for me, but I didn't really care for it. I would say I liked: 'I Need Your Love', 'We Found Love' & 'Blame' the most! :)

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

Blame is my fave. And Feel so Close

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

That song did become pretty overrated though

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

At least there's movement but Stormzy having eight entries? How come Olly Murs only had TWO when 24HRS came out? Huh? Huh? They need to stop counting album tracks. Talk to you more on the full top 100 tomorrow

avatar

Piran

1

Unfortunately, Stormzy has better streaming & that's what got him more entries.
Also, had the remix of 'Shape Of You' not counted to the original, there's a chance that 'Something Just Like This' could've took the #1.
Anyway, have a good night Synthesiza! :)

avatar

Piran

0

It seemed to break records in: sales, streaming & YouTube across the world. I think it deserved to though! :)

Its funny, school was my favourite track on 18 Months, and I love Slide! It's entirely subjective :') I love em!
