A little bit of statistics for the chart watchers (singles chart; 2016 49 weeks so far):
pre-streaming era 2013 - 31 no.1s - average time spent at no.1 - 1.68 weeks
partly with streaming 2014 - 39 no.1s - average time spent at no.1 - 1.33 weeks
streaming full year 2015 - 24 no.1s - average time spent at no.1 - 2.17 weeks
streaming increase 2016 - 11 no.1s - average time spent at no.1 - 4.45 weeks

It will be interesting to see the results next year, as we can expect streaming will be dominating the singles chart with 90% and more.
A quote from a BBC analysis looking at the current charts: 'In the first six months of 2016, there were 86 new entries in the UK singles chart. Ten years ago, that figure was 230....Perhaps it means the charts are becoming irrelevant - at least as the gold standard of success. Bands now look at ticket sales, or engagement on social media as indicators of their reach and impact. And those are the things, rather than hit singles, which traditionally sustain careers.'

After seeing six songs from the starboy album I downloaded the whole album and it has been the only thing that I have been listening to for the past seven hours

... reading Piran Delves mail below, I suppose to have got my answer: "...streaming has done something good for the Official Charts today!" Excuse my english, I use to say "My taylor is rich but my english is ... very poor". Nice day to you all. Mike.

Hello, I'm French and use to follow the UK singles charts. Can you help me, by answering this question: why so many Weeknd singles this week in the top 100?

avatar

Dan Love

1

His album is doing so well in streaming that all the songs have charted. Same happened with One Direction, Justin Bieber, Drake and Beyonce

avatar

I would like to see "Working Girl" by Train on the Official UK Singles Chart next week. It's one of my favorite songs at the moment. #Train #WorkingGirl

avatar

Lombe

"Rockabye" by Clean Bandit (feat Sean Paul and Anne-Marie) remains at number 1 for a fourth straight week. It's a song about the hardships of single mothers. It was written by Jack Patterson and Ina Wroldsen. Ina Wroldsen is a Norwegian singer/songwriter and one half of the electropop duo Ask Embla. She has written songs for the likes of Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, James Arthur, Leona Lewis, Little Mix, Olly Murs, The Saturdays, and One Direction. Ina explained (in an interview) that the lyrics for "Rockabye" are about her son.

Canadian singer/songwriter, The Weeknd released his third studio album entitled "Starboy" through XO and Republic Records on November 25, 2016. 94.4% of the songs on the album are on the Official Single charts this week. 17 of the 18 tracks on the album are on the charts. The only song that didn't make it onto the charts is "I Feel It Coming" (feat Daft Punk). That means his songs are currently occupying 17% of the entire charts. My favorite song on the album is "Stargirl Interlude" featuring Lana Del Rey which is at number 73.

Rory Graham, aka Rag'n'Bone Man's debut single "Human" rises 66 places (from number 77) to number 11. This song has already reached number one in Austria, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland. His debut album is set to be released in March, 2017.

JP Cooper's new single "September Song" debuts on the charts at number 99. JP Cooper features on "Perfect Strangers" by Jonas Blue which is at number 67 this week.

There are now only three weeks left before this year's Official Christmas number 1 is unveiled. Some of the contenders are Sir Terry Wogan ("Floral Dance), Cliff Richards, James Cordin, Justin Bieber, David Bowie, and Clean Bandit ("Rockabye").

I Feel It Coming is on the chart, it's at number 10

Looking at this weeks new entries, what more proof is needed that the charts are broken. I can only imagine the younger generations who don't know what the charts used to be like take any notice of them nowadays. Ridiculous!

avatar

Painmix King

-1

Look at the sales chart for a more accurate reflection

avatar

Dan Love

2

The sales chart is rubbish this week, since none of the songs from Starboy are in it except for Starboy, I Feel It Coming and Party Monster. In the sales chart, Party Monster hasn't even got into the top 40 which is almost impossible in my eyes.

avatar

Dan Love

1

The charts are actually really good this week, since The Weeknd has all 18 songs from his album in the chart. They'll probably drop out next week, so I think it's fine that they are all in.

avatar

Painmix King

0

Just because your favourite artist isn't in the chart dosen't mean it's not more accurate

avatar

Painmix King

1

No, it's supposed to be a singles chart! That;s why it's broken! If one of my favourite artists had that many new entries n the same week i would still have the same opinion

avatar

Dan Love

1

I don't even like The Weeknd, but it's obvious that his album Starboy is doing really well right now. It's almost impossible that he can only get to 12 in the sales album chart. Iwouldn't find it strange if it hd got to number 1 on the albums chart.

As for his songs, some of the debuts of his tracks (for example Rockin) are a bit too high, but but it's crazy that they didn't even enter on sales.

Naos

2

Well, this is an alright week I suppose. "Rockabye"'s pretty good though, I'll admit.

avatar

Piran

0

Hey Joseph! I hope your week is going well. :)
I'm pleased to hear that you like 'Rockabye'! Do you think it can become a hit on the Hot 100 then?

avatar

Naos

0

It'll probably end up like most world hits and only have minor success unfortunately.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, like 'This Girl' & 'Lush Life' unfortunately.
Speaking of Clean Bandit, what did you think of 'Rather Be'? :)

avatar

Naos

0

I don't think I've heard it.

avatar

Piran

0

Well it was the second biggest hit of 2014 in the UK & I'd definitely check it out if you've not heard it before. :)

avatar

Naos

1

I will. Apparently, for the U.S. in 2014, it was #41 on the year-end list, and made the Top 10.

avatar

Piran

0

I knew about 'Rather Be' peaking at #10, but I never knew it almost went Top 40 on the 2014 Year-End Hot 100. Regarding 'Rockabye', it just became Clean Bandit's first #1 in Australia & will probably get #1 in the UK again next week. I really hope it becomes a hit on the Hot 100 & I have a good feeling that it will. :)

avatar

Naos

1

I hope so. Might I ask why it looks like the video for it was filmed in Japan? Looks like Tokyo (ironically, the song only went to #44 on the Japan Hot 100).

avatar

Piran

0

The video was indeed filmed in Tokyo, Japan. I'm not sure of the reason why it was filmed there though.
Regarding the Japan Hot 100, didn't you say that Carly Rae Jepsen often does well on that chart?

avatar

Naos

1

She does well on Japanese charts in general, yes. "I Really Like You" peaked at #4 on the Japan Hot 100, and made #6 on the year-end list.

avatar

Piran

0

That's awesome! It peaked at #3 in the UK believe & just missed out on the Top 40 in the Year-End Charts. I really wanted 'Run Away With Me' to perform so much better across the world than it actually did though. :/

avatar

Naos

1

Ah. "Run Away With Me" only made #83 in Canada, #100 in Australia, and #58 in the UK. Couldn't even chart in Japan, where she's arguably the most popular.

avatar

Piran

0

I know a lot of people on Billboard (myself included) said that they loved 'Run Away With Me'.
So what is your favourite Carly Rae Jepsen song then? For me, it's a tie between 'Call Me Maybe' & 'Good Time'. :)

avatar

Naos

0

"Sweetie".

avatar

Piran

0

I don't think I've heard 'Sweetie', but I'll definitely listen to it later. :)
So on tonight's BB200, The Weeknd's 'Starboy' should easily debut at #1, but what's going to be happening on that chart for next Sunday then?

avatar

Naos

1

Because it was never released a single, it's an album track from her 2012 album Kiss. Though I also like "Sweet Talker", "Sour Candy", and "Tug Of War" from her 2008 album Tug Of War, and "Black Heart" and "Run Away With Me" from Emotion.

Regarding the Billboard 200, The Weeknd could be the only debut in the Top 50 looking at Hits Daily Double, except for maybe Garth Brooks...:

1. The Weeknd - Starboy
2. Pentatonix - A Pentatonix Christmas
3. Bruno Mars - 24K Magic
4. Metallica - Hardwired... To Self-Destruct
5. Moana soundtrack - Various Artists
6. Trolls soundtrack - Various Artists
7. Pentatonix - That's Christmas To Me
8. Michael Buble - Christmas
9. Miranda Lamert - The Weight Of These Wings
10. Hamilton - Original Broadway Cast
11. Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood - Christmas Together
12. Lady Gaga - Joanne
13. Jordan Smith - Tis The Season
14. Garth Brooks - Gunslinger
15. Drake - Views

avatar

Piran

0

Fair enough, I've only heard of her singles & no other album tracks.
Judging by Spotify, I have a feeling that 'Starboy' could stay in the Top 10 for a while like 'Views' did, just because of the huge streaming for it. I definitely prefer the former of those though!
Well it's good to see Pentatonix with two albums in the Top 10. :)

avatar

Naos

1

Makes sense, in the way of album tracks, I recommend the ones I said, plus "Favourite Colour" from Emotion. It's more sensual and "" than her typical cuteness that comes off in her music, but it works well. I kind of hope Starboy doesn't stick around, but yeah, it will. Especially not letting it hold on to #1... I would like Pentatonix to get their second #1 album.

avatar

Piran

0

Speaking of Pentatonix, how do you think their version of 'Hallelujah' will do on the Hot 100? I see it's charting at #9 on US iTunes right now & I can imagine radio is supporting it well in your country. :)
I definitely look forward to listening to some of those Carly Rae Jepsen album tracks that you recommended. Also, to update you on how my personal Top 40 will look for next Wednesday: 'Touch', 'Nothing Else Matters', 'Human', 'Starboy', 'I Feel It Coming', 'Shed A Light', 'Call On Me [Remix]' & 'Bad Things' will be some of the big climbers. From what you've told me before, you'll probably have mixed feelings on this overall.

avatar

Naos

1

I think it'll do well relatively, I don't think it'll outperform "Mary, Did You Know?" though (it peaked at #13). Yeah, mixed on that. Here's some of my big climbers, which I will likely finalize when the Billboard 200 article is posted:
"Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen (+64), "PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)" by PIKOTARO (+18), "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?" by Elton John (+34), "Reach Out To The Truth" by Shoji Meguro ft. Shikoko Hirata (+10).

avatar

Piran

0

Also, on my chart, 'Million Reasons' & 'Hallelujah' (Leonard Cohen) could be possible re-entries. The 40 debuts will be: 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' by Mariah Carey, 'Party Monster' by The Weeknd & 'The Mack' by Nevada ft Mark Morrison & Fetty Wap.
I've not the latter song that you mentioned, but I like the others. :)

avatar

Naos

1

That's cool, and of course you haven't heard it. It's gaining because it's part of a video game soundtrack, of a game I recently ordered on Amazon, in anticipation for the game, it gains on the chart.

avatar

Piran

0

I think I also read in another post of yours that you have six Taylor Swift songs in your Top 100 this week which is awesome. Do you ever check out the Crown 100 then? :)

avatar

Naos

1

I do. "Mean" (#13), "Cold As You" (#37), "Style" (#47), "Fifteen" (#77), "Teardrops On My Guitar" (#88), "Love Story" (#89). I do check it, but I don't bother too often. Only one song in my Top 10 is on the chart at all, and very few on my songs in My Top 100 are ever really on the chart.

avatar

Piran

0

Well I'm looking at the Crown 100 & it looks like '24k Magic' just dethroned 'Starboy' after a few weeks, but I think the latter will go back to #1 when the chart updates on Monday. The Top 10 there looks great though! :)
I also like how you did a paragraph about your chart & included a Bubbling Under Chart as well.

avatar

Naos

1

Thank you. I think you'd like a lot of the Bubbling Under.

avatar

Piran

0

Well I just checked it out & it's awesome! 'I Want Candy' is the only song I don't know here, but I like the others. :)
I may be able to do even more than a Top 40 after next week, as that's when my Christmas break from University starts.

avatar

Naos

1

Well, the original version of "I Want Candy" by The Strangeloves went to #11 in the US, the one by Bow Wow Wow went to #62 in the US, and #9 in the UK. The one by Aaron Carter went to #31 in the UK. That's cool that you can do that after next week. By the way, I may be getting a recurrent chart set up as well, for songs that fall out the chart, and I will impose a rule similar to Billboard's recurrent rule to prevent songs from sticking around too long.

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, if I extend my chart for next week, it'll only be until the start of 2017 though. Do you ever check your personal leaderboard to see which song is your overall #1? :)
Also, do you know why the BB200 article is late posting again?

avatar

Naos

1

It's been late a lot lately. So far, I have two #1s: "Ain't Nothing Changed" by Loyle Carner and "Tiimmy Turner". I may backlog some charts to change that, because neither of those songs would be my #1, not even close, if I started Crownnote at the beginning of the year.

avatar

Piran

1

Well I started mine with the 2017 Year-End Hot 100, so I can accurately track what my favourite songs of this coming year are. Speaking of which, I'm excited your best & worst list of 2016. :)
Also, regarding my personal chart: 'Rockabye', 'Versace On The Floor' & 'Shed A Light' are contenders to be #1 next Wednesday, but the latter is most likely at the moment.

avatar

Naos

1

Cool! Well, I will be posting an entire 100 songs for the year-end list.

Songs I'm considering for the worst 10: "Me Too", "Gold", "Die A Happy Man", "Low Life", "2 Phones", "Middle", "679", "NO", "We Don't Talk Anymore", "Treat You Better", "Don't Mind", "Work From Home", "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)".

Songs I'm considering for the best 10: "Humble And Kind", "Tiimmy Turner", "My House", "Perfect", "Close", "Ex's And Oh's", "Never Forget You", "Same Old Love", "Into You", "Roses", "I Took A Pill In Ibiza", "Don't Let Me Down".

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate...no 200 article yet?

avatar

Piran

0

Nice! Well for me...
BEST: 'Hello', 'Don't Let Me Down', 'Can't Stop The Feeling', 'Closer', 'My House', 'I Took A Pill In Ibiza', 'Cold Water', 'What Do You Mean?', 'Wildest Dreams' & 'Hymn For The Weekend'.
WORST: 'Work', 'Needed Me', 'Low Life', 'Broccoli', 'NO', 'Me Too', 'Sucker For Pain', 'Pop Style', 'All The Way Up' & 'Watch Me'.

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Sunshine Gal! :)
No, the BB200 article hasn't posted yet. That's a shame because I really want Jstar to do his list & see the predictions for tomorrow's Hot 100. :/
I've just been chatting to Joseph about our most & least favourite songs that will be appear on the 2016 Year-End Hot 100. ;)
So you could still be the first comment tonight after all...

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hahah!! the one time i let you be the 1st comment and i could be the first :D well, got tons of work done today...2mor, the oven >-< but it'll be less work in the long run. i was wondering why you were still on the uk article...so which article do you wanna chat on?

avatar

Naos

1

I'm not counting "Watch Me" as it was in my worst list last year, and I don't include songs twice unless it that much. Out of your choices (this is relative based on your choices, not how I'll place them on my year-end list), this is how it will end up:

:
- "Me Too"
- "NO"
- "Low Life"
- "Work"

Bad:
- "Watch Me"
- "Needed Me"
- "Pop Style"
- "All The Way Up"

Meh:
- "Hello"
- "Closer"
- "Wildest Dreams"
- "Cold Water"
- "Hymn For The Weekend"

Decent:
- "Can't Stop The Feeling!"
- "What Do You Mean?"
- "Broccoli"

Good:
- "Don't Let Me Down"

Great:
- "My House"

avatar

Piran

1

You were going to 'let' me be the first comment?? I was going to do that anyway! :P LOL
Anyway, I'm on the Hot 100 article right now, so I'll see you there.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

that's right ;). yeah, i responded to your post on the hot 100 article :P

avatar

Piran

0

Well from your list...
: 'Me Too', 'Low Life', 'Me Too' & 'Treat You Better'.
BAD: 'Gold' & 'Don't Mind'.
MEH: '2 Phones', 'Middle', 'We Don't Talk Anymore', 'Work From Home', 'Tiimmy Turner' & 'Ex's & Oh's'.
DECENT: 'Die A Happy Man', 'Humble & Kind', '679', 'Send My Love [To Your New Lover]' & 'Same Old Love'.
GOOD: 'Perfect', 'Close', 'Never Forget You' & 'Roses',
GREAT: 'My House', 'Into You', 'I Took A Pill In Ibiza' & 'Don't Let Me Down'.

avatar

Naos

1

Interesting. I did expand the Bubbling chart to include 25 songs. Though I do see a problem, in how the site doesn't separate charts from each other. So, having one week on the bubbling chart, will count for a week on the official chart.

avatar

Piran

0

Oh I've got another question about the site: if you want to post mid-week predictions (that don't count towards the actual Top 40), what do you do then? :)

avatar

Naos

1

I just saw that problem before you asked. You could ask the guys who run the site. Go to the connect button and click "contact us". Email them, and they may be able to answer your question.

avatar

Piran

0

Thanks for that Joseph! :)
So are you going to be on the BB200 article tonight then & are you still tracking the pure sales of 'Views'?

avatar

Naos

1

I will if it ever posts. And no, I'm not, but it's likely selling 5,000 or less a week now.

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, it probably won't post until tomorrow morning my time now & even it does post shortly, I won't be on there for too long. :/
I was chatting to Sunshine Gal about something interesting earlier in the week: there is potential that The Weeknd could be at #1 on tomorrow's Hot 100 with 'Starboy', as well as on the BB200 later. Would this be the first ever time that we have the same title for a #1 song & album, but also in the same week?

avatar

Naos

1

I'm not sure. But, "Starboy" looked to have maybe peaked in airplay early, and "Black Beatles" is still ahead in YouTube and sales.

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, I was hoping for 'Starboy' to get to #1 for at least one week, but I certainly don't mind 'Black Beatles' staying there. I'm surprised 'Black Beatles' was ahead of 'Starboy' in sales this week though, considering I've seen the latter dominating iTunes over the past few days.

avatar

Naos

0

Yeah, it's ahead by about 5,000.

avatar

Piran

0

Which one do you hate more at the moment then? You don't like both if I remember correctly... ;)
Also, what do you think of the rest of The Weeknd's discography? I already know you dislike Rae Sremmurd!

avatar

Naos

1

"Black Beatles", definitely. At least The Weeknd has charisma, and his song doesn't come off the power of a meme that's unrelated to the song. The Weeknd's par for me (par means passable, by the way).

avatar

Piran

0

Well I thought The Weeknd was decent in the 'Beauty Behind The Madness' era, but I didn't like him as much as many others did. However his 'Starboy' album is really growing on me fast, which is going to result in two big climbs & one debut in my next personal Top 40 chart. :)
Considering 'Starboy' won't be #1 tomorrow, then it will definitely have a final peak of #2 on the Hot 100. I think 'Black Beatles' will probably remain atop the Hot 100 for the rest of 2016 now.

avatar

Naos

0

I hope something can come and take the #1.

avatar

Piran

0

It would be nice to see a Hot 100 #1 debut again soon. Hopefully: Katy Perry, Taylor Swift & Justin Timberlake can do so. Who do you think will have the next Hot 100 #1 debut then? :)

avatar

Naos

1

Not sure, just hope something, anything, takes the #1.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

2

ok, everyone, the uk artist i'd like to spotlight this week is going to be george michael! :) his biggest success over here was his 'faith' album...amazing u.s. chart runs for his album and singles and an incredible year of success for him! even today, he's still the only uk act to have 6 top 10 singles off 1 album...not even the beatles achieved this feat. so i'll break up my throwbacks into smaller posts...let's go ahead and take a look @ the 1st 3 top 10's off his history-making 'faith' album.

1. 'i want your ***' enters on 6/6/1987 @ #51-47-36-28-21-11-9-5-4-2 *final peak*. will remain in top 10 for 5 wks. modest climb into the top 10 and obviously u.s. radio was slow to pick it up in the beginning...prob. due to the title ;).

2. 'faith' enters on 10/24/1987 @ #54-37-27-19-10-5-3-1! will spend 4 wks @ #1 and stay in the top 10 for 9 wks. will become hot 100's #1 song of the year ;)

3. 'father figure' enters on 1/16/88 @ #49-37-30-19-12-4-1. spends 2 wks @ #1 and will remain in the top 10 for about 1 month.

so, keep in mind that in 1987 in the u.s., we had very few cassette singles...you would buy the entire album. so the hot 100 back then would be predominantly radio airplay. obviously the first single is taking a lil' longer to go into the top 10 and was prob. considered too risque' for radio back then. and also a #1 smash @ that time would be around 3-5 wks.. i certainly recall 'faith' and 'father figure' being big radio hits back in the day. so, george is off to a good start ;). 3 top 10 hits in a row is always a good thing...but wait, he ain't done yet ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

4. 'one more try' enters on 4/16/1988 enters @ #40-31-22-14-4-2-1. remains @ #1 for 2 wks and will stay in the top 10 for 6 wks.

5. 'monkey' enters on 7/9/1988 @ #42-36-21-16-10-8-2-1. spends 2 wks @ #1 and will remain 6 wks in the top 10. *and my fave song off the album back then!*

6. 'kissing a fool' enters on 10/8/1988 @ #47-34-28-22-15-9-7-5 *final peak*. will spend 4 wks in the top 10.

so, we got 3 more top 10 hits for george...and the very unique thing about his hot 100 run during this time, all 6 hits peaked within the top 5! in the u.s., janet jackson's 'rhythm nation' album boasted 7 top 5 singles. the only album in history to do so...and george is right behind her ;). he obviously got a lot of support from u.s. radio during this time.

also, during this time, top 10 lifespans usually would be very short...so, for george to spend say 9 wks in the top 10 *'faith' single* shows how much u.s. radio was playing it non-stop. and back then, most songs would enter @ the bottom of the chart and have to climb their way up...no top 5 or #1 debuts quite yet *mj and janet would be the first to debut @ #5 with 'scream' in 1995 and mj would be the first to debut @ #1 with 'you are not alone' in 1995*

so, to have 6 top 10 hits in 1 yr shows how big george really was in the u.s. @ this time. i had his album and i knew he was a success and all, but even i was surprised how well he did on the bb charts when i was doing these throwbacks. but wait, there's more to come...next up, george's amazing run on the bb 200 albums chart :)

avatar

Piran

1

I never would've guessed George Michael would be your next throwback artist, but he did a lot better than I thought on the Billboard charts looking at these stats.
In the UK, he had 7 #1s & 23 Top 10s as a solo artist, also 4 more #1s & another 9 Top 10s as part of WHAM!. Speaking of which, I believe 'Last Christmas' is the best selling song ever in the UK that didn't peaked at #1. It sold 1.75 million copies over here, but was blocked from the top by Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'.
Thanks for posting this as always Sunshine Gal! :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate!! that's why i kept it a surprise ;) i got my 2nd set up and wait 'til you see his 200 albums chart feats :). even i was blown away! and yeah i remember that band aid song...i think madonna performed with them onstage...ok, next up, the 200 album chart feat ;). wait 'til you see it! :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

ok, next up, we'll take a look @ the 'faith' album on the 200 albums chart in 1987.

'faith' enters 200 albums chart on 11/21/1987 @ #41-15!-8-5-3-3-3-2-1. spends an amazing 12 non-consecutive wks @ #1!! spends an exhilarating 11 1/2 mos. in the top 10!! :))))! he did fall to #11 a few times, but basically spent almost 1 full yr in the top 10 *he's telling adele, 'this is how you do it lass!' :D*. album will become bb 200's #1 album of the year and reach 10x plat...that's right, 10mill. in 1 yr! ;)

he won grammys, mtv awards, american music awards, billboard music awards *esp. for having #1 album and single of the year*. so, an amazing splash for george and i'm not just saying that. today's artists have internet advantages to try and do what he did back then...and based on my own research, looks like george was the very 1st solo artist to achieve 6 top 5 singles off 1 album here in the states! :) possibly 1st artist ever :)

of course, it's never easy to try and match and even top a success like this and the later yrs did prove to be a challenge for george over here. but, seeing today's crop of pop artists that can't even do a fraction of what he did without internet advantages, goes to show when you have an exceptional album and people really like you...anything can happen. i always believe 'if your music is hot, people will like it'.

so, congrats again to george on a phenomenal momentum here in the u.s. and his still-unmatched feat of 6 top 10 singles off 1 album for any uk artist. and of course, other uk solo acts can look @ george's u.s. splash for inspiration.

ok, everyone, the uk artist i'd like to spotlight this week is going to be george michael!

1. 'i want your ' enters on 6/6/1987 @ #51-47-36-28-21-11-9-5-4-2 *final peak*. will remain in top 10 for 5 wks. modest climb into the top 10 and obviously u.s. radio was slow to pick it up in the beginning...prob. due to the title ;).

2. 'faith' enters on 10/24/1987 @ #54-37-27-19-10-5-3-1! will spend 4 wks @ #1 and stay in the top 10 for 9 wks. will become hot 100's #1 song of the year ;)

3. 'father figure' enters on 1/16/88 @ #49-37-30-19-12-4-1. spends 2 wks @ #1 and will remain in the top 10 for about 1 month.

so, keep in mind that in 1987 in the u.s., we had very few cassette singles...you would buy the entire album. so the hot 100 back then would be predominantly radio airplay. obviously the first single is taking a lil' longer to go into the top 10 and was prob. considered to risque' for radio back then. and also a #1 smash @ that time would be around 3-5 wks.. i certainly recall 'faith' and 'father figure' being big radio hits back in the day.

Great to see Clean Bandit earn a fourth consecutive week at #1 on the singles chart with 'Rockabye'. While it is one of my favourite songs of the week, I like 'Rather Be' much more, so I'd have mixed feelings about 'Rockabye' becoming their longest UK #1 single (which it probably will).
It's also good that The Weeknd managed to get six songs in the Top 40 this week & two of them in the Top 10. 'Starboy' might not be as good as 'Beauty Behind The Madness', but I'm still pleased that The Weeknd has lots of debuts & some climbers around the Top 100 this week. Finally, streaming has done something good for the Official Charts today!
Regarding the other climbers in the Top 40 today, I'm very pleased to see 'Human' get some recognition in the UK after becoming a hit across central Europe. However, I was expecting it to be much higher than #11 though, but it looks like the strong sales for the song will last for a while. Unfortunately, streaming (yes, streaming still has it's problems) is very low, so I think that's what might keep it from reaching #1. 'You Want Me' is a decent dance song, but I don't think I'm going to remember it for very long.
A really positive note is seeing 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' back in the Top 40 for a tenth consecutive year! Hopefully it can climb as high as the Top 10 this year. :)

I definitely look forward to seeing who they'll be about! :)
Yeah, it doesn't look like anything will stop Clean Bandit on the UK charts for now, as 'Rockabye' has a huge lead in sales at the moment. Do you like the song then?

Hey Sunshine Gal! I hope you're having a good day. :)
Thanks again for posting these George Michael throwbacks yesterday. I was also checking out WHAM!'s discography & they had 3 Hot 100 #1s: 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go', 'Careless Whisper' & 'Everything She Wants'. Their 1984 album, 'Make It Big', was their only BB200 #1, but it did get a 6x platinum certification from the RIAA. :D
I definitely look forward to seeing which artist or group you'll choose next! ;)

hey good morning mate! :))))! looks like chelsea won 2day :) so they're still the #1 team in the league, correct? and mate i gotta say, our football is so much better :D american football is way more exciting..but british football is interesting. oh my bulls won last night, i got my hawks on in a few hrs and then another bulls game 2nite. and then my giants are playing the steelers 2mor.

and yeah i remember wham, i was too young for them back then, i just remember them on mtv mostly. with george, i remember a lot of teen girls and american women finding him very appealing ;). i mean, he's a british guy ;), right there!. i was 12 when the 'faith' album was out, so he didn't really do anything for me...but i did like his music. and judging from his hot 100 stats, he was on the radio immensely. even i was impressed going thru his chart runs...i knew he had 6 top 10 hits..but 6 top 5's??!! we gotta double check if he's the first artist to achieve that...i think he might be.

well, i did get more work done around the house yesterday and after our chat today, i have to get back to cleaning. and yes, i got my uk throwbacks ready for next frid. ;). and don't forget, i'll be taking a short break after this coming week :).

Well both Manchester City & Chelsea are good teams, but that's great for Chelsea. Yeah, Chelsea are #1 in the EPL right now & Liverpool are just behind them at #2 (their game will be tomorrow against Bournemouth). I'm pleased British football is growing on you though! :)
I thought you said that Janet Jackson 7 Top 5 hits on the Hot 100 from one album, but it's very impressive that George Michael was able to 6. :D
Also, next week should be when Billboard post their Year-End Hot 100 of 2016, so try to check that out when you have more time. ;)
Unfortunately nobody seems able to access any of the full UK charts right now...

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

so which u.s. football game did you watch? i know it wasn't the giants! :D you gotta watch the right teams :). now i gotta get you into hockey, baseball and basketball ;).

but as far as george goes...i mean, he basically did what adele did with no internet advantages. and him being in the 200's top 10 that long...that was pure sales! no streaming like drake and riri :D. that's why it irks me so much when bb compares drake to mj.. :D or comparing riri to whitney LOLLLL! back in the day, you were in the top 10 based on the volume of sales you did that week...not for just selling a minimal amt. LOL! artists like mj and george could've been pulling 1mill. in sales each month :). people had to really like you and your music for you to produce #'s like that.

and i double checked the thriller and born in the usa album (both with 7 top 10 hits before george's faith album) and yep! george was the first act to have 6 top 5 singles on 1 album ;) but his record feat still stands today: 1st and only uk act to have 6 top 10 singles off 1 album...even with the beatles and all their top 10 hits, george still tops them in that category. and yes, janet has 7 top 5 singles off rhythm nation. so, like i always say 'there's room for everyone' :).

and his album being in the top 10 for almost 1 full year??!! even shania, nsync and bsb couldn't do that *their competition would be other diamond and big sellers all during their respective chart runs*. even i never knew that...he had disputes with sony later on and a couple albums later, i didn't hear anymore music from him. is he still making music in england? but i can't imagine how he felt that year :D

avatar

The American football game I watched was this year's SuperBowl. I've also got to get you into rugby now! :P LOL
Also, regarding the unfair comparisons that Billboard sometimes did, didn't they do one between Rihanna & The Beatles before?? That's definitely an awesome feat that George Michael accomplished though. :D
The only chart performance that he has had in the past few years in the UK is from compilation & live albums, so no studio albums from him recently. I think I read that a re-mastered edition of one of his albums is due for release on 03/03/2017. ;)

*sorry mate, i got slow speed now until the 18th :/*

well, of course you fell asleep watching the denver broncos!! , i do that everytime they play ;). i knew it wasn't a giants game! :) you gotta check out the 2008 superbowl between my guys and the undefeated new england patriots. the 4th quarter is the most exciting quarter in football history ;). and who's your rugby team and what's the name of that league? i really don't know what the rugby is :D

oh and i also double checked on the faith album...tech. elton john is the first uk solo act to reach diamond status with his greatest hits compiliation in the late 70s. butttt, it was a double record in the beginning *the riaa would count it as 2 units. and the beatles white album had 4 records in it, so each 'sale' would be counted 4x*. george was the 1st uk solo act to have a diamond studio album..dunno if that's considered a record feat. but yeah, the 80s sure were lots of fun! if you can find the 1989 mtv awards *i think it's that yr* madonna presents him with a vma...she would later work with his producer on the 'vogue' single. and the remastered album george may be doing next year could be the faith album, 2017 will be the 30th anniversary of when the faith album came out :).

so, what's up with duran duran these days? i see on bb's site they lost a major court battle...why doesn't the official charts have an article on that? they're a uk band aren't they? ;D i was too young for them when they came to the u.s., but i do remember them on mtv. basically when wham and duran duran were big over here, i was into my madonna faze ;)

I only really watch rugby when it's international games (when England play) & I don't pay much attention to the national league tp be honest. It's actually very similar to American football. :P LOL
Did you know that there are 116 albums certified Diamond by the RIAA, but only 13 Diamond singles in the US? Well I'm still waiting for 1D to be the first UK group to have a Diamond single in your country! :D
So have you heard much of The Weeknd's 'Starboy' album then? Also, now that 'I Feel It Coming' is in the Top 10 over here, do you think it can do the same on the Hot 100? ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

what? isn't rugby where they have a stick? we don't do that in american football! and that's all the sports you guys got!!?? ok, you gotta start watching some blackhawks games ;). why do you think i'm on slow speed right now :D in about 1 hr, the blackhawks will be playing the philadelphia flyers..gonna be a good game, we eliminated them in the playoffs a few yrs back.

well, a good bulk of those 13 diamond singles are thanks to youtube and i got mixed feelings about that. i don't consider those achievements the same as george michael, mj, whitney...but that's the riaa rules of today :/. & i have a feeling that mj will be getting more diamond awards in the future...and don't let garth brooks' figures fool you ;). he does lots of 'walmart-exclusive' deals and walmart is known for skewing figures. i wouldn't be surprised that garth's actual tallies might be far less ;).

i haven't had a chance to listen to the weekend's album yet...and 1D does have a good shot @ that diamond single...hopefully they don't completely lose their public appeal though. do you know how the media knew liam was gonna be a dad? sounds to me someone leaked that to the press, and this person got paid ;). it just doesn't sound like it came from either of them. and i saw on his twitter *he is ripped, btw!! ;)* that he's signed to republic records? but niall said they're coming back...any thoughts on all that?

Yeah, most of the recently certified Diamond singles would probably on be 3-4x platinum with pure sales. A majority of their units came from streaming & majority of their streaming came from YouTube. Regarding 1D, did Liam ever make an official announcement that was going to have a child? Also, I think 1D will reunite in about 5 years, but probably without Zayn in my opinion (as he's moved in to an R&B sound & I can't really see him making pop music again). That's just my prediction, but hopefully the group are back together sooner than that! :)
Haha no, rugby doesn't involve a stick. You can score by a 'try' (Americans would say 'touchdown') & you can get extra points by kicking the ball through the uprights & over the crossbar. The other sports that are very popular in the UK include: tennis, cricket, golf & racing. :D
I'm going to sign off for a bit now, but I'll try to be back on again later. Nice chatting to you as always! ;)

oh the xmas chart is called 'the holiday hot 100'...i think it was called something else back in the day...and guess who's #1? that's right, mariah :D oh speaking of george michael, check who's @ #8 or 9 ;) i wanted elvis in the top 10, so we'll see within the month.

oh and i just double checked the hot 100 article...last activity was 2 days ago. everyone's out xmas shopping? :D

That's so strange! Speaking of which, it's also funny how we signed off at the same time... :P LOL
Well I always look forward to seeing your throwback posts each week. I'll probably be on here for most of December, but not as much for the end of the month.
Isn't Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas' always #1 on the Christmas Hot 100 chart? It's good to see Pentatonix's 'Hallelujah' debut at #2 though & WHAM!'s 'Last Christmas' (one of my favourite holiday songs of all-time) is at #9 & Elvis' 'Blue Christmas' is at #19! Which reminds me, favourite Christmas songs is our next list theme for the Hot 100 article. :)
Well we don't have a separate Christmas chart over here, but the UK Top 100 on Christmas Day is a very exciting one. I think I already told you that being #1 on the Official Charts over here on Christmas Day is a huge honour. :D

intresting, i didn't know we signed off @ the same time, but i did want to get started on my cleaning projects. it always cleaning a whole house in 1 day, this way, there won't be much left once everything's out.

oh i replied back to you on fb... i forgot to answer your question about liam...well, it looks to me that that didn't come from them, but an 'unnamed source'...has he commented on it over there?

and i was dying to tell you my next throwback was on george michael, but it was even more fun keeping you in suspense :D. hard to believe that was almost 30 yrs ago! i would've been 12 when his album was released here, but i still can't get over how well he did over here and you and i both know that it's very difficult for uk acts to make it over here. and looks like he'll hold onto that record feat for many more yrs to come...it's been 30 yrs since he notched those 6 top 10 hits and even adele can't match him on that one ;). so it'll be a long while *maybe* until another uk act can come close to that...is he still making music over there?

and yes, mariah will be #1 on the xmas hot 100 almost the entire xmas season...unless pentatox eclipses her, but she's usually #1 the entire time. each xmas over here, u.s. radio usually plays the same xmas classics: mariah, nat king cole, elvis, brenda lee, jackson 5, bing crosby...each year, every year ;D

That's weird, especially considering that you could post the throwbacks last night. :/
Anyway, I just thought I would give you an update on how my personal Top 40 chart will look for next Wednesday: it will be between Robin Schulz & David Guetta's 'Shed A Light' (current #15) & Clean Bandit's 'Rockabye' (current #1) for my #1 next week. Little Mix's 'Touch' & Rag'n'Bone Man's 'Human' also have a chance to enter my Top 10. There will still be 3 songs each from The Chainsmokers & Little Mix, but 4 from The Weeknd following his latest album release. :)
Speaking of The Weeknd, have you heard 'I Feel It Coming' by The Weeknd yet? I think it will definitely reach at least the Top 10 on the Hot 100! ;)

Sunshine Gal

yeah i was just saying that i think it's still impressive that a 30 yr old feat is still unmatched by contemporary uk acts, who shall remain nameless :D. i mean really?? this other act also has history-making feats here in america too...anyway, and ok, just let me know when you have to go, i got the bulls coming up soon.

yeah i've heard the weekend's other song...and yes i do think it can land in the top 10 soon. oh wait, so for the hot 100 article on mond., it's top 10 xmas songs? did our westlife, take that and bbmak mates ever make any xmas albums? nsync did...too bad bsb never did :)

Now that you mention it, I'm probably going to sign off now actually. I would be on for longer usually, but I'm just really tired today! :P LOL
Yeah, Top 10 Christmas Songs will be the list theme for the next Hot 100 article. Also to answer your other question, I don't think: Take That, Westlife or BBMAK did do any Christmas albums. That would be awesome if 'I Feel It Coming' could go Top 10 in the US, as it has already done so in a few countries across Europe. :D
Anyway, it was great chatting to you again tonight. Talk to you tomorrow! ;)

Hey Piran. I have been busy this week. I was doing extra work on Friday and couldn't make it here. I drove over an 1:30hr back and forth from Jersey today and just got home. Tomorrow I am going to Connecticut also which is over an hour away from where I live. But I think I should be home around like 5 or 6 my time so I should definitely be able to do the list tomorrow if billboard posts the article at a decent time.

Also I was happy for Clean Bandit. Also it was cool for Little Mix to secure a second straight week at number 1 with their album. Take care Piran and hopefully see you around tomorrow.

hey mate, good morning! i'll be @ the hot 100 article if you're on :P

Piran

Hey Jstar! Thanks for your message. :)
Well you should be back around 10-11pm my time, so I'll have my #4-peaking songs list ready. Everyone seems to have been busy this week except me! :D LOL
I'm very pleased about Clean Bandit & Little Mix as well. There's nothing really close to stopping 'Rockabye' at #1 right now, so I think it could be #1 next week as well.
Finally, Lady Gaga's 'Million Reasons' is back at #8 on US iTunes. She'll be performing it on the X Factor later, so it could boost sales for that song in the UK tonight. ;)

Hey Piran. I just got home. I am about to release the power of the Dark Side on billboard if they don't release the article soon lol.

I will be busy during the week. So unfortunately I won't be there tomorrow. But I hope it goes well like always. I hope your night is going well.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, they've been late so much recently. I can understand for the AMAs & Thanksgiving weeks, but I'm not the reason for the delay today... -_- LOL
My night is going well thanks & I hope yours is too. It's a shame you won't be on the Hot 100 article tomorrow, but are you still planning to do your list on the BB200 article tonight?

J

Jstar

1

Well. I have planned on doing this list for many weeks but it never seems to pan out. If the article posts by at least 9pm my time I will still do it tonight.

You might not seem me until Friday after today. I just have other things to do this week. But I already knew this month would be busy for me.

But good to hear all is well with you. I actually am feeling better. I haven't experienced any pain like the last 3 days. So that is good. Also you definitely won't see me Saturday the 17th. I will be watching Star Wars lol.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I was going to say that you were planning to do that list a couple of months ago. I hope you get the chance to post it soon though! If you really want to, then you could just post it on the Hot 100 article tomorrow night. :)
Well I won't be on too much next weekend as I'm going home for my Christmas break from University then & I've got lots of plans with family, as it's been a few weeks since I've last seen them. I'm also probably not going to be here for the Hot 100 article for the second week of next month, as I have an exam the next day. :/
Haha it's cool that you're a Star Wars fan though! I watched the last movie & it was really good. :D
Oh Sunshine Gal is on at the moment if you're not already chatting to her.

J

Jstar

1

I am speaking to her too.

Well we all know The Weeknd will be number 1. It is pretty obvious lol.
I actually was not that big of a Star Wars fan coming into last year. I wasn't all to excited for the movie last year. But it might have been my favorite movie of last year.

I hope this one is just as good. I have been watching some of the older ones lately. You sound like your schedule will be tight also. Life is not just fun and games when you are older. You have a lot to get done. It is what it is though.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, apparently 'Starboy' is going to debut with just over 300k+ total units. It's already become one of my favourite albums of 2016 though! :) LOL
I might watch the Star Wars movie over the Christmas break, but I've already got lots of plans with my family. What are your plans for Christmas Day then? :D
Also, the 2016 Year-End Hot 100 might post at some time next week. You might've already told me before, but what were your most & least favourite songs of this year? ;)

J

Jstar

1

I don't have an exact plans yet. I am just going to enjoy not working lol. Starboy broke some sort of Spotify streaming record for a week I believe.

I will get back to you on that list at another time. I would have to analyze it closely. It sounds like some sort of strategic battle plan that I am talking about lol. But I just have to check some of the songs from the year and let you know during the week.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, definitely enjoy your time off work! Also, The Weeknd passed Drake's record for most monthly Spotify streams I believe. :)
As for the songs that will probably chart on the 2016 Year-End Hot 100, my choices would probably be...

J

Jstar

1

Cool picks. The thing I am most surprised about though is the fact that Pop Style and Watch Me will make the year end list lol. Watch Me somehow was still big enough in 2016 I guess. I don't remember Pop Style being too big. But ok.

I like your best picks though. Especially Hello, Don't let me Down, Closer and Wildest Dreams.

avatar

Piran

1

Thanks! I'm pleased that you like my choices. :)
Well The Chainsmokers have probably been my favourite new artists of 2016, so that's partly why they may have two songs inside of my Top 10 best list. :D
Yeah, I'm surprised that 'Pop Style' is going to make the 2016 Year-End Hot 100 as well, because I thought it fell quite fast after it's debut. Didn't you once say that you enjoyed 'Watch Me' though? ;)

avatar

Naos

"Pop Style" got its 20 weeks.

avatar

Piran

Did it spent most of it's time in the lower Hot 100 then? Also, what do you think of the other Drake songs that will reach the 2016 Year-End Hot 100, like: 'One Dance', 'Too Good' & 'Controlla'? :)

J

Jstar

1

I did like Watch Me. But that is cool you didn't like it. I know you have liked the Chainsmokers a lot so no surprise there. I am going to take a short break but reply to me if the article comes out.

avatar

Piran

1

Well Sunshine Gal is going to take a break as well, but I'll definitely look out for the BB200 article. :)
Regarding 'Roses', it will probably appear in my Top 25 songs if I decide to re-order the entire 2016 Year-End Hot 100. :D
Chat to you soon Jstar! ;)

Naos

I don't like any of the Drake songs, personality-less garbage. And "Too Good" is just douchey. On the matter of "Pop Style", it went like this:
#16, #19, #25, #40, #21, #23, #23, #28, #35, #42, #45, #47, #58, #66, #67, #72, #78, #82, #86, #86.

So, it had two weeks in the Top 20, and nine weeks in the Top 40.

avatar

Piran

Hmm... 'Pop Style' had a much better chart run than I expected. However, it was pretty forgettable considering 'One Dance' was at #1 during a lot of this time.
Also, what are your most & least favourite songs to peak in the Bubbling Under Songs chart this year? :)

avatar

Naos

2

I haven't paid too much attention to the Bubbling Under charts this year. I don't like "Bacon" by Nick Jonas, I did like "Drug Dealer" by Macklemore, I liked "FDT" by YG, "California" by Colonel Loud, "Desperado" by Rihanna I liked as well.

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, 'FDT' was quite good, but my favourites have been: 'Still Falling For You', 'Rock Bottom' (not sure if this was late 2015 though), 'Perfect Strangers' & 'Please Don't Go'. My least favourite is easily 'Steal Her Man'.
Oh by the way, the BB200 has now posted, so I'll see you there! :)

avatar

Piran

Hey Jstar! :)
The BB200 article has just posted, so I'll see you there when you get back on here.

Rockabye just got to number 1 in Australia as well, I can see it staying there for a while

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I was very happy to see that earlier this week & it does look like it has a good lead in sales in your country right now as well. :)
I think 'Rockabye' might stay at #1 over here for a bit as well, probably until the week for Christmas #1 in the UK.

C

Calum Scott ouch! Good song though, you got enough songs in their The Weeknd? It is obvious his album could of done better here if all the 18 tracks weren't released at once, and why can't the chart include a little bar on the side that showed the exact sale figures? That'd be nice.

avatar

Piran

1

Hey chartwatcher! It's been a while since you were last on here, but I hope everything is going well with you. :)
Well regarding The Weeknd, many of his songs will take big falls next week, or even drop out of the Top 100 completely. I think 'I Feel It Coming' will stay around for a while though, as that's been announced as the second single from his latest album.

C

chartwatcher

1

Hi and you Piran :) Just been doing other thing's really you know, yeah true, but what I'm getting at is it seems to have effected the album sales, the number 18 placing of the Starboy album in Scotland says it all, I think it is a strategy to see which are most popular for singles, "Party Monster" will most like be selected as the third, and also? Do you know why Calum Scott came in so low, was it to do with poor stream's or poor sale's or both.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I thought 'Starboy' would be much higher on the Scottish albums chart. It's like Drake & JB all over again! LOL
The UK & Scotland tend to differ a lot though; 'One Dance' got 15 weeks at #1 in the UK, but it got 0 weeks at #1 In Scotland (peaked at #2).
'Party Monster' seems like a good choice for the third single though. Also with Calum Scott, 'Rhythm Inside' debuted at #30 on sales & I can't it anywhere in the Top 100 for streaming.
