Not looking good for any change in the way charts are compiled. The following srticle from today's Sun newspaper.
"Analysis of OCC data by Music Week shows download figures are crashing with album sales down by 30.5% year on year. Streaming has risen by 80%."
Although no mention of singles sales

Is that Mr. Brightside I see at #86? Yes it is! I actually had low hopes for it re-entering after I saw the update but no. :D

KUNGS VS COOKIN' ON 3 BURNERS

is a really bizarre name for a singer or group. Wonder how they came up with that name! Weird! The verse has a strong motown feel.

How about Fall Out Boy's song Ghostbusters for next week's chart? The new Ghostbusters film is out next week!

I'm so ecstatic All In My Head (Flex) got in the top 100!!! It's one of my favourite songs at the moment and I really hope it gets to No.1 or at least top 10! It would be both Fifth Harmony and Fetty Wap's first no.1s, even though both have been successful artists over the last year or so!!
Also, One Dance being still at no.1 is SO BORING. I'm only 14 so I've never known anything like this amount of weeks. No-one really buys it anymore anyway!

Ew no. The song is generic as , and this time round you can't even say the guest rapper improves the song.

how this works now i have a neighbour who when at work streams one song on repeat all day so the charts arent real sales anymore there just fiddled by artist and record companies in reality drake wouldnt even been at number one for one week.and this week its not in the top ten on itunes

Drake would have been at number 1 for like 3 weeks if sales were discounted

One Dance still at number 1? No movement in the top 4? And why on earth is Don't Let Me Down in the top 10? It's rubbish: just because it's better than their other two songs doesn't mean it's good.

Anyone else notice Piece of Me in the top 40? I think it's comparable to The Right Song, if it drops out next week the similarity is confirmed.

Even if streaming sales were a true reflection of what is popular I don't think modern chart pop music is as good or memorable as per internet chart music. You could argue streaming is what we deserve. A stagnant pop chart with fairly unmemorable pop melodies is what the internet generation deserve. In the same way that Twitter is often used to share insults at people rather than used as a useful tool to share communication, streaming pop music tends to lower the musical bar in terms of quality of melody. In simple terms modern pop music is kinda crappy - i dont think Drake's song is remotely good enough to have got to no 1 in the first place! - so debating the pros and cons of streaming isn't going to make any difference to the quality of chart music. I feel the best internet era pop music is found on albums and not in the weekly top 40.

Surely the next Now compilation will be mostly the same as the last one, because nothing is fresh or moving enough on the Top 40 chart anymore. Desperate times!

So here are my thoughts on the UK charts this week:
- Well firstly, congratulations to Drake for a 13th consecutive week at #1 on the singles chart with 'One Dance'... but this news has surprised me a lot. I still really like the song, but it's just getting so tiresome seeing the same results every week. I don't understand how Kungs vs Cookin' On 3 Burners can't get the #1 overall despite 'This Girl' being the nation's best selling song for at least a month now. I will say this: if 'One Dance' can be #1 overall, yet not even appear inside the Top 10 on the live iTunes chart, then the chart formula used here should definitely be reconsidered in my opinion.
- Elsewhere though, things are looking slightly more exciting. Great to see: The Chainsmokers, Daya & Calum Scott all make their 1st Top 10 appearances today. Also I think Jonas Blue & Ariana Grande could be entering that region as well soon if they can keep their momentum going with their new releases too. Great news for Blink-182 on the albums chart, as 'California' debuts at #1 there.
- There were only 3 new entries across the entire Top 100 this week, but I do quite like all of them. Hopefully Olly Murs can debut very high next week with his latest song, but if not, then I would like 'This Girl' to finally lead the overall chart next Friday. As mentioned earlier, I think 'One Dance' is a good song, but I strongly believe that somebody else deserves the #1 spot on the singles chart now.

The thing is that the formula isn't just arbitrary: it reflects the reality of the average revenue generated by the 2 major formats. Messing with it to induce volatility would mean to mess with the integrity of the chart. If the chart seems stagnant, that's reflective of the rate at which the populous is accepting new songs and giving repeat spins to the hits.

Okay then, but let's compare 'This Girl' & 'One Dance' in terms of the 3 chart contributors this week:
- 'This Girl': #1 on sales, #1 on downloads, #4 on streams
- 'One Dance': #11 on sales, #11 on downloads, #1 on streams
Surely this implies that 'This Girl' should've been more popular than 'One Dance' this past week. As I've mentioned in previous reviews of mine, I completely agree with streaming being incorporated into the charts (as this is the way more music fans are consuming music nowadays)... but not to the extent where the best performing song in the country for 13 weeks actually was the most bought for just 3 of those weeks.
People can say " 'One Dance' had longer at #1 than 'I Will Always Love You' & 'Umbrella' ", however it was much harder for the latter two to do so because Rihanna & Whitney did it all on purchases. That said, you are entitled to your opinion how you think the chart formats should be used.
Also on another strange yet interesting fact, 'One Dance' is the 3rd longest consecutive #1 song in the UK of all-time, but it's never been #1 on the Scottish Singles Chart at all.

R

RIME

Ranks only tell part of the tale. IIRC, This Girl is doing about 30% better than One Dance in sales, but One Dance is doing about 50% better in streams. In other words, the distribution of streaming amongst songs is far more logarithmic than sales, where margins go on a more gradual scale barring a new release. It's pretty clear who the victor is in this scenario.

Also, Downloads is a subset of Sales, so to cite both of them to say something "deserves" #1 more is misleading.

So do you know how often the OCC update the chart formula, if they ever have done since the inclusion of streaming? When I checked, I believe it was something like: 1 'copy' sold (either physical or download) = 100 streams.
I saw an article yesterday on this website that announced the biggest singles of 2016 so far in the UK Singles chart & 'One Dance' is currently 2nd as a result of selling 1.142m total 'copies'.
However... it has received 74.8m UK listens since release, so going by the current chart formula, it would have got 748k of the 1.142m from streaming. This means that 'One Dance' received 394k actual purchases, which is still really good considering how low pure sales have been this year relative to earlier this decade. :)
I don't have that much of a problem with 'One Dance' being #1 on the UK Singles Chart for 13 consecutive weeks (I'm really pleased for Drake with that achievement) but it just annoys me slightly when people constantly say he topped Rihanna's & Whitney's chart feats, because that is an unfair comparison to be honest. 'One Dance' wouldn't have done what 'Umbrella' & 'I Will Always Love You' did if there was no streaming, like back then.

What is wrong with counting the first stream of a song, per account, as equal to a full download sale, and then not counting any more streams of that same song for the same account? I think the fact that the chart is based on revenue, rather than number of sales, is rather unrepresentative. It should be about how many people buy or stream a song once, not how many times people incessantly stream a song.

R

RIME

2

I'll just say that I'm not fond of comparing eras further than 5 or so years because at that point it really is comparing apples to oranges. Heck, I wouldn't compare this year to anything further back than 2013 in good faith due to the rise of streaming. So much of the climate of music consumption changes relatively rapidly so that achievements really do rely on the context of its era to have meaning.

R

RIME

1

But it's balanced out in that a sale is worth around a hundred streams. If someone's such a power user that they listen to a track through streaming a hundred times (and I don't think I've even listened to a lot of songs I've bought that much), it's practically as if they bought the song through getting that much use of it, and in any case the revenue generated is just as much, so I think it's justified however one looks at it.

Hopefully Olly Murs get another top 10. If Don't Let Me Down can do it Olly Murs had better.

They should never have made the main chart sales + streams. It changes what that chart has been about for over sixty years; sales. By all means, measure how much people are listening to the track in a streams chart, but don't equate it with sales. That's utter nonsense. Even worse is when they then make false comparisons to earlier sales-only charts. You can't make comparisons of sales of oranges and apples with sales of just oranges!

avatar

Andii

"One Dance' is the 3rd longest consecutive #1 song in the UK of all-time"; those earlier number ones were based on sales only, so it's a false comparison. How long was "One Dance" #1 on sales?

Cassettes coexisted with records and (slowly) wiped them out. CDs coexisted with cassettes and then wiped them out. Downloads coexisted with CDs and (for singles mostly) wiped them out. Streaming now coexists with downloads and is slowly killing downloads' market share. This Girl is the leader in sales but is doing pathetically overall; I've heard it's somewhere in the 25k range, while One Dance is slightly above half of that. Both the "people's champion" and One Dance are now getting the majority of their points from streams (and the points are proportional to the studied revenue), which leads to the inevitable conclusion that streams are becoming more important in the music industry than straight sales.
