Bruce Springsteen has everything Madonna does not, starting with talent and ending with respect for fans. A Bruce Springsteen show is a true live experience, while a Madonna show is like watching a DVD. Springsteen, even today, almost a decade older than Madonna, will play a show lasting anything up to FOUR HOURS while Madonna can barely struggle to two hours, if her dancers haven't pulled a hamstring. Besides, I doubt Madonna cares a great deal since she took the No.1 spot in the USA, a far more important market for her than here. x

A

addickted2hcharlton

Streaming chart
#7 elton John
#8 fleetwood mc
#16 spicegirls
#23 Bruce
#33 madame x
May someone explain me why elton John & fleetwood's streams are massive? why dont we see tina Turner, sting,u2, cliff richard etcs' hits... I think they have many hits and strong catalogue as elton..

M

Mouttonnoir

0

Rocket Man movie is the main reason Elton's streams are massive. Tina is now a legacy act and has retired from recording/performing which of course results in zero profile hence lower streams/sales. Cliff is just too cheesy and has zero cred with any demographic apart from his ageing dwindling fan "girls" who are mainly between 50-80 who don't stream (music)

avatar

etin

0

But elton's diamonds was in chart for a long time before "rocket man" and he is not young.. cliff is a massive seller than elton in uk as queen & beatles levels

M

Mouttonnoir

0

Cliff isn't regarded as a "cool" artist. His fan base are not likely to stream their music. Elton, Queen, Beatles are regarded as "serious" artists- their music still features in pop culture and is in public consciousness. Their music has "staying power"

serious artist ? I think the only reason is : he is alive and isnt mediatic like elton

Springsteen is 8 years and 11 months older than Madonna she turns 61 in August while he turns 70 September 23rd

Definitely pop female artists over 45 are suffering from ageism through the media, but at least, Kylie, got Number 1 with her comeback album. 90's revenge?? Hahaha.....now, seriously speaking, can't believe Madame X didn't reach the 1 spot.

Madonna is not talented, she has always been about shock and awe. I want a real artist like Kate Bush to release new music.

A

addickted2hcharlton

Yeah but gettin to no 2 iss an achievement in isself.

Er early stuff like Borderline, Angel, Lucky Star I loved all them ones but I prefer Queen Donna Summer meself n always will do n all.

Madonna 'It's that I'm not pretty enough, I don't sing well enough, I'm not talented enough, I'm not married enough, and now it's that I'm not young enough"

Men can age, women aren't allowed sadly. They get far more criticism, especially if like Madonna they carry on being vibrant and full of ideas and creativity. Unfortunately, for the trolls - she's tough as old boots. She's not going anywhere - and she'll carry on being who she is

Do most aging men strip down bare in front of young girls and expose their aging bodies to the world? I can name no male singer that does what Cowdonna does to seek attention. Yet, she is never arrested for indecency. Granny is over 30 years past her prime. She is disgusting.

For a such 'strong, empowered woman', she sure does enjoy playing the victim card. Friggin' , poor little ultra-millionaire, my heart bleeds for her.

And what is this 'woman can't age' nonsense? WHO even said that??

Stop carrying on as if Madonna has talent. I would much rather have a new Kate Bush album!

I liked er early stuff but I aint so keen on er stuff nahadays n she's a bit full of erself n all unlike them other great soul female singers who ardly get a look in nahadays on the charts.

Thass juss wot think but I'd rather ear a new CD by Joan Armatradin meself.

I would expect to see Madonna drop like a stone over the next few weeks. Her appeal appears to have shrunk to her core base (prepare for incoming attack). She is on the cusp of becoming a legacy artist- still capable of producing great music but without the reach/clout

S

Sam

You’re probably right. But achieving even number 2 is a mean feat in traditional chart terms (ignoring streaming which kept the Greatest Showman up there for so long). A lot of her lack of exposure I believe comes from people casting her aside before giving her a chance, including radio stations. Whether that’s ageism I don’t know. But the quality of her new work is much higher and just as relevant and original as a lot of new stuff.

K

Lack of exposure? She was the guest performer on the Eurovision Song Contest! How much exposure do you need? Ageism? Bruce Springsteen is about 10 years older than her! And he's at Number 1.

S

Sam

-1

There was a repeat of the BBC Radio 1 controversy which was blatantly ageist. Western Stars was released just before Father’s Day which is why it has such good physical sales figures. If it wasn’t for that, no way would he have achieved the sales figures he did.

M

Mouttonnoir

0

She has had plenty of exposure- Eurovision was a massive platform (on which she failed). She's appeared on awards shows, TV chat shows (although notably not as the exclusive guest but one of many). No matter how great an artist's talent is the demographic shifts and Madonna at 60 as most older artists, struggles to connect with the younger audience- she is the same age group of many younger music consumers grandparents! That fact is not lost on them. Appearing with younger co singers as she has done on this album brings this fact into even starker contrast. It actually reminds me of when Mae West was always seen on the arm of virile 20 somethings- a very desperate look! Madonna needs to rethink her strategy or become a sad comic figure which would be awful for such a talent.

S

Sam

0

Everything you’ve said it totally fair. I’m 21 myself, and find it sad that age plays such a role in appeal to the young audience. Especially in the streaming age which gives older acts virtually no chance. Some of the drivel my age group listens to is nothing compared to Madonna’s new stuff. Just a sad reality. If Taylor Swift or another young artist released identical stuff I’m sure it’d be a smash hit.

M

Mouttonnoir

Well Sam I'm 60 and have been a life long music fan- of all genres. That's always been the case- the wheel of life, generational change. Remember that back in the day Madonna herself as a young artist displaced older more established pop divas. My pet peeve are those artists who are but a shadow of their former self who insist on making music when their talents have almost left them. The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney are today WELL past it yet continue to embarrass themselves in public. It is cringeworthy to watch them being lauded by folks who really should know better but encourage them. Sadly for many young artists and fans the performance aspect has in many cases become more important than the musical ability/talent. The very idea that folks whould pay to attend a concert where the performers lip synched ir were not playing live would've destroyed their credibility and ended their careers. It's not only pop acts who are guilty of this but rock bands too and "live" theatre shows in West End & Broadway!

S

Sam

0

Yeah you’re right. Oh well. And yeah I totally agree a lot of old artists keep going with vanity acts of little quality rather than trying to make original stuff. And yeah Madonna’s had a good run, just the sad reality of the music market these days.

She was a legacy 10 (maybe even 20) years ago!

M

Mouttonnoir

0

You certainly could make that argument. 20 years ago is pushing it a bit though. She was certainly loosing ground fast to the younger girls and of course that core audience (Gay men were certainly growing older many now in their 40/50/60s) How people buy/consume music has changed too. Combine both these facts and Madonna has lost ground.

A

addickted2hcharlton

Yeah it will be interestin to see wot appens, I didn't think much of er interview with wassisname Norton, she was better when she did Wogan all them years ago.

A

She aint really got the voice to do standards as she.

A

It aint ageism cos radio stations ave different groups wot they cater for nahadays.

Great achievement for both Bruce Springteen and Madonna.

Both deserved #01 but only one can get it.

Bruce is now with 11 number one albums, just Robbie Williams and Elvis have more (as male artists).

All Madonna studio albums peaked #01 or #02 excepting for her first release (that peaked #06).

Just like The Beatles only 1 non-compilation or live album missed #01 or #02 spots. In case of The Beatles was "Yellow Submarine" that peaked #03. In the case of Madonna was her first album (her Tracy inspired "I'm Breathless" peaked #02 and "Evita" peaked #01).

I must say a huge congratulations to Joy Division, who at last have reached a well deserved, higher chart placing at No.5 with their debut album "Unknown Pleasures". It's good to know that they are getting more recognition now - 40 years after that album was released.

How Bruce Springsteen beat Madonna is beyond me. No exposure for singles, little hype or run-up. Must have been because of its clever Father's Day release. Madame X should have been number one. Madonna's best album in a long time!
