Fresh from success on home soil, Zayn has topped this week's Billboard 200 chart in the United States.

The former One Direction member's debut solo album Mind of Mine shifted 157,000 combined units, 112,000 of which were pure album sales.

Billboard reports that Mind of Mine marks the first time a British male solo artist's debut album has gone straight in at Number 1. The last time a gent from the UK reached Number 1 with his first album was George Michael, whose album Faith reached the Billboard peak in 1988. However, Faith climbed to the top spot after nine weeks on the chart.

Zayn also broke a similar record on the Billboard Hot 100 with Pillowtalk; that track debuted at Number 1 also, making Zayn the first ever UK artist to reach Number 1 with their first charting track.

Speaking to OfficialCharts.com about the success of his first collection, Zayn said: "I want to thank all the fans and my team at RCA and First Access Entertainment for everything they have done to help me start my journey as a solo artist. It really is the beginning. I can't believe that I have managed to achieve this as a solo artist.

"I am very proud coming from Bradford achieving this in my home country. It’s mind-blowing to me. I don't take the support I have received for granted. My life at 23 could have been very different."

Elsewhere on the US album chart, R&B singer K. Michelle debuts at Number 2 with her third album More Issues Than Vogue, and Rihanna's Anti holds at Number 3.

Atlanta rapper Young Thug earns his highest-charting album yet at Number 7 with his fifth collection Slime Season 3, and rock band Asking Alexandria score their third Top 10 record with The Black at 9.

I think you will find that Andy Gibb (born in Manchester) had his first 3 singles hit no 1 in the USA

Congratulations. Good for him that his first effort came in at #1.

So out of all the British singers out there, it is this talentless weasel who manages to set this record? The only reason he is popular is because he is the spawn of a terrible boy band, as no-one would probably care about him without that.

If you think Zayns an awful singer, I'd hate to hear who you think is a good one. Your pretentiousness is showing.

The album is, in all fairness, a breath of fresh air in today's generic, mass produced, meaningless mainstream music industry. Listen to it if you like old school RnB (done in a new way).

Freddy Mercury, Bruce Dickinson, Elton John, David Gilmour, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Amy Winehouse, Damon Albarn and so on are my ideas of good signers. People like Zayn are mediocre at best.
