World Cup Fever Hits Charts as Dizzee Rascal and James Corden leap to Number One With Shout

13/06/2010

World Cup Fever hits the charts with a bang as no less than three World Cup themed songs enter the Official Singles Chart Top 10, with another five in the Top 40.

Dizzee Rascal and James Corden lead the charge from the front with their unofficial World Cup anthem Shout (based on the Tears For Fears 80s classic of the same name) leaping straight in at number one.  Dizzee and James performed the song for the first time a week ago on TV show Britain’s Got Talent reaching an audience of some 15 million viewers. But as the track was released only last Wednesday (9th July), Shout has had just four days’ sales to leapfrog all other comers, football-related and otherwise, with impressive sales of over 110,000.  Only the Helping Haiti Everybody Hurts charity single in aid of victims of the Haitian Earthquake has sold more in a first week this year so far.  Charity will also benefit from Shout with Dizzee Rascal and James Corden donating their royalties from the record to Great Ormand Street Hospital.

Still on a World Cup theme, 32-year-old Somali-born Canadian rapper K’naan scores his first UK Top 10 hit with Wavin’ Flag, Coca-Cola’s official World Cup Anthem, which climbs to number three this week from last week’s number sixteen, following K’naan’s performance of Wavin’ Flag at the World Cup opening ceremony on Friday.  And the David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and Lightening Seeds’ now classic 3 Lions has climbed to number ten from last week’s 53.

World Cup related records further down the charts are: New Order’s World In Motion at number 22, Terry Venables’ If I Can Dream and 23, the England Squad’s Three Lions 2010 at number 28, Fat Les’s Vindaloo at number 32 and Fifa’s Official 2010 song Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) by Shakira featuring Freshly Ground.

Official Charts Company managing director, Martin Talbot says:
“Few things get the nation’s emotions roused like the World Cup and few things are better at stirring emotion than music.  All England fans will be hoping the national team emulates the success of Shout. ”
The success of Dizzee Rascal and James Corden’s Shout denies 21-year-old London MC Tinie Tempah a second number one single as his latest release Frisky featuring Labrinth, a new entry at number two, would in almost any other week have comfortably been number one with sales of over 85,000.  Tinie Tempah first scored a number one with his debut single Pass Out in April this year.

Elsewhere in the Official Singles Chart Top 10, former number one OMG by Usher featuring Will.I.Am, has moved up to number six this week from last week’s number eleven.

In the Official Albums Chart, Christina Aguilera’s Bionic is straight in at number one, giving the American megastar her second UK number one album after Back To Basics in 2006.  Aguilera has two other UK Top 10 albums to her name; Stripped (number two in 2002) and Keeps Gettin Better – A Decade Of Hits (number ten in 2008).

There is just one new entry into the Official Albums Chart top 10 – the compilation The Very Best Of by big band icon Glenn Miller has moved up to this week’s number eight from last week’s number twelve.
Pixie Lott’s Turn It Up is a re-entry at number ten up from last week’s number seventeen.  Turn It Up peaked at number six last year.
