Twenty-one-year-old South Londoner Tinie Tempah (aka Patrick Ogwugu) blasts his way to the top of the Official Singles Chart and scores his second number one single of the year with new release Written In The Stars, the Official Charts Company confirms today.
Written In The Stars follows Tinie’s major label debut Pass Out which also went straight to number one (March, 2010) and Frisky feat Labrinth, which peaked at number two (June, 2010). Between them, the two singles have now sold over 750,000 copies.
Written In The Stars has itself sold over 115,000 copies in its first week alone, a first week figure surpassed this year only by Katy Perry’s California Gurls featuring Snoop Dogg (124,000) and the charity single Helping Haiti’s Everybody Hurts (over 450,000).
But hit singles are only part of the Tinie Tempah story. This summer, he played at all the major festivals from Wireless and the Big Chill, to Glastonbury, Ibiza Rocks and Radio 1’s Big Weekend. In May, Damon Albarn invited Tinie to join him on Jonathan Ross to perform with Gorillaz, while in June Snoop Dogg, who did a remix of Pass Out, asked Tinie to join him on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. P. Diddy enlisted Tinie for the remix of his latest single Hello, Good Morning while Paris Hilton booked the rapper for a private party in Ibiza. However, Tinie’s highlight of the year so far, is something a little closer to home:
“I went back to my old school recently for the first time since getting my results,” he says, “All the kids and teachers came out of the classes - it was pandemonium. Then they took me to a new part of the school and guess what was there? A brand new studio opened in my name. I was so humbled.”
Tinie Tempah releases his debut album Disc-overy on October 4th 2010. His nationwide headline tour starts on October 10th.
There are three other new entries in this week’s Official Singles Chart Top 10. Tinie Tempah’s fellow UK urban star, and sometime producer and collaborator (on singles Pass Out and Frisky), Labrinth is straight in at number three with Let The Sunshine. Adele’s Make You Feel My Love soars to number four from last week’s number 102. The track previously peaked at number 26 in 2008 but has seen a resurgence in popularity after it featured on TV’s X Factor ‘Boot Camp’ last weekend. And Enrique Iglesias and Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger’s Heartbeat climbs to eight from last week’s number thirteen.
In the Official Albums Chart, The Script are back at number one from last week’s number two with Science & Faith which debuted at number one two weeks ago.
The Official Albums Chart Top 10 features four new entries; Mark Ronson & The Business International are straight in at number two with Record Collection, the follow-up to 2007’s triple platinum Version; The Central Band of The RAF’s Reach For The Skies, released to celebrate the RAF’s role in The Battle Of Britain, is straight in at number four; KT Tunstall scores her third Top 5 album with Tiger Suit new at number five and veteran Eric Clapton scores his twenty-fifth Top 10 hit with Clapton new at number seven. Simply Red’s 25 – The Greatest Hits is a re-entry climbing to number nine from last week’s 55. The album previously peaked at nine in 2008.
