The Hobbit, Game Of Thrones and Peppa Pig have all been declared chart-toppers as the UK’s most popular video franchises of 2015, according to a new Official Charts report.

The success of the three brands is highlighted by the new Official Franchise Report 2015, which is drawn from the Official Charts Company’s weekly poll of video sales (spanning DVD, Blu-Ray and VHS), which includes all video titles on release in the UK, from Avengers to Zoolander.

The Hobbit emerged as the biggest franchise of the lot in the new report, achieving sales of 1.498m videos across the 12 months (Jan to Dec 2015) through 5 products (including box sets and singles film sets). This put it ahead of Jurassic Park, which sold 1.429m units during the year across its nine products on sale.

The movie sector is by far the biggest sector for franchises, according to the report, with the Top 50 biggest movie franchises delivering 19.5million sales during 2015. All but two of the titles in the overall Official Franchise Top 10 were films (see the chart at the bottom of the page).

Game Of Thrones was the biggest TV franchise, securing sales of 891,000 in the 12 month period across seven products, while the second biggest TV franchise was Downton Abbey, whose 16 different products sold 414,000 copies. The Top 50 TV franchises sold a total of 6.564m units in 2015. The biggest laughter franchise was The Big Bang Theory, selling 234,000 units, with Planet Earth claiming the prize for biggest documentary franchise with 17,500 units sold.

Top of the Children’s Franchise Chart was Peppa Pig, with 660,000 sales to its name, across 37 different active products, ahead of Scooby Doo in second place with 634,000 sales across 89 active products – Peppa Pig was the biggest pre-school franchise, with Scooby Doo the biggest school age brand. Across the Top 50 children’s franchises (which also include Tom & Jerry, My Little Pony, Thunderbirds and Postman Pat), the sector sold 6.0million videos in 2015.

Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot says, “The new Official Charts Franchise Report highlights the power of the movie and TV franchises in the home entertainment sector – brand loyalty is clearly an important driver in helping inform movie and TV fans’ DVD and Blu-Ray choices.

“Our report not only underlines the popularity of the Hobbit, Game Of Thrones and Peppa Pig and her family, it also demonstrates that Warner Home Video and Universal Home Entertainment are currently kings of the franchise. While Warner can claim the top movie and TV franchises (thanks to the continuing power of The Hobbit and Game Of Thrones), Universal has three titles in the overall Franchise Top 10, in the form of Jurassic Park, Fast & The Furious and Pitch Perfect.”

The Official Franchise Report 2015 is drawn from the Official Charts Company’s ongoing weekly retail survey of 15,000 outlets, and spans 130,000 titles which have been identified as part of 6,000-plus different franchises.
