To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Official Singles Chart, The Guardian have selected what they deem to be the best Number 1 singles from 1952 when the Official Singles Chart started, right up to the present day.

The list was compiled by guardian.co.uk/music writers and regular contributors, and features a hand-picked Number 1 for each year.

"’Best’" is of course a problematic term,” says The Guardian’s Caspar Llewellyn Smith, “so what we really mean is favourite… it's all an incredibly subjective exercise. The hope is simply that what has emerged as a list is in some way true to the history of British pop, in all its peculiar glory.”

You can see an amazing, interactive version of the full countdown here, listen to the vast majority of the tracks on a special Spotify playlist here, or tweet @guardianmusic on Twitter using the hashtag #bestnumber1s to let them know your favorite Number 1 single.
