Blockbuster Star Wars, cult TV smash Game Of Thrones and kids' fave Paw Patrol are the most successful video franchises of 2016 so far, the Official Charts Company can reveal.

Date collected in a new Franchise Report for the first half of the year puts Star Wars first in the overall rankings and the biggest film franchise, with Game of Thrones topping the list of favourite TV franchises, and Paw Patrol heading up the rundown of children's franchises.

Across 12 titles, Star Wars racked up over 1.98 million sales, racing ahead of the next biggest franchise of the year so far, James Bond, which has sold 1.63 million units across 45 titles. Game of Thrones reigns supreme over the TV franchises rundown, with 505,000 sales from nine titles, while runner-up Downton Abbey has 138,000 sales in the bag in the first six months of 2016, over 17 titles.

In the kids' franchise countdown, Paw Patrol, with 290,000 sales from four titles, just edges out Lego, which has notched up 270,000 sales through 33 titles. The biggest children's franchise of 2015, Peppa Pig, has to settle for bronze in the first half of the year, with 260,000 units sold over 39 different titles.

The Franchise Report is released twice a year, in February and August, and takes in data from the Official Charts Company's weekly retail survey of 15,000 outlets selling DVD, Blu-ray and VHS across the UK.

Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot says, "The new Official Charts Franchise Report highlights the power of the movie and TV franchises in the home entertainment sector – and especially the power of the Star Wars, Bond, Game Of Thrones and Paw Patrol brands in helping inform movie/TV fans’ DVD and Blu-ray choices."
