British music industry trace body the BPI have today announced that Sir Elton John will be the first ever recipient of the newly created BRITs Icon Award.

The award, which is an extension of the annual BRIT Awards, will be presented to iconic recording artists at its own ceremony. The inaugural event will be held in central London on Monday September 2, and will be broadcast on ITV later that month.

“The BRIT Awards has recognised many exceptional artists whose music has connected with millions of fans,” explains BPI and BRIT Awards Chief Executive, Geoff Taylor. “A few of these artists, such as Sir Elton John, have achieved such a level of artistic creativity and originality, critical acclaim, global recognition and popular success that they deserve to be recognised as true Icons of our cultural life. With our broadcast partners ITV, our aim is to provide the ultimate tribute to these musical superheroes, which not only recognises their unique achievements but which is also spectacular entertainment.”

"It's a tremendous honour and a real thrill for me to have my work acknowledged in this way, and I'm really looking forward to participating in what promises to be a very special occasion," comments Sir Elton John.

On the night, Sir Elton will be performing some of his best-loved songs as well as new material from his forthcoming album The Diving Board. A limited number of tickets for the ceremony will go on sale tomorrow (Tuesday, July 23) at 10am from www.brits.co.uk
