Sam Smith has won the prize for Best Original Song at this year's Oscars, for his James Bond Spectre theme song Writing's On The Wall.

The singer-songwriter and his producer Jimmy Napes fought off strong competition from fellow nominees including Lady Gaga with her song Til It Happens to You; while The Weeknd’s Earned It, from Fifty Shades of Grey, was also hotly tipped for the award.

Writing's On The Wall became the first ever Bond theme to top the Official Singles Chart last year. Talking to Official Charts at the time, he said: "It was such an honour to be asked to write and record Writing’s On The Wall and it’s incredible that it’s become the first Number 1 Bond theme song.

"It’s been an unforgettable experience working with Barbara [Broccoli] and Sam [Mendes] to become part of this British legacy. I couldn’t have done this without my fans – this is a special moment I’ll never forget."

Other tracks that were up for the Best Song award were Simple Song #3 by Sumi Jo, Viktoria Mullova and the BBC Orchestra from Youth, and Manta Ray by J Ralph and Antony from the film Racing Extinction.

Meanwhile, Amy Winehouse film Amy won Best Documentary, beating the likes of What Happened, Miss Simone?.
