Fresh from his BRIT Awards Critic’s Choice win, Sam Smith has topped the BBC’s Sound Of 2014 poll.

Congratulations to Sam Smith, who has won the BBC’s Sound Of 2014 poll.

The news comes less than 24 hours after the 21-year-old singer collected his BRIT Awards Critics’ Choice trophy.

It was announced that Sam had beaten singer Ella Eyre - who he was also up against for the BRIT Award – by BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Nick Grimshaw this morning. Other acts who made the Top 5 of this year’s poll included Banks (3), Sampha (4) and George Ezra (5).

Now in its twelfth year, previous winners of the annual award have included such household names as Adele, Ellie Goulding and Jessie J. US band Haim, who topped the poll last year, went on to score a Number 1 album on the Official Albums Chart.

"I'm completely speechless," said Sam. "It's a huge compliment to be recognised by the industry and the BBC in this way. I really didn't expect it.
"Being amongst names like Ellie, Jessie J and Adele is just incredible because they inspire my music so much."

Sam is no stranger to the Official Charts himself, and already has two Top 40 hits to his name. He reached Number 11 in October 2012 after featuring on Disclosure’s Latch, and he reached Number 1 last June with Naughty Boy with the track La La La.

La La La was the fifth biggest selling single of 2013, with sales of more than 941,000 copies.
