Sam Smith wins 2014 BRITs Critics’ Choice Award

Sam Smith beats Ella Eyre and Chloe Howl to one of the most prestigious prizes in music.

21-year-old singer/songwriter Sam Smith has won the 2014 BRITs Critics Choice Award, can reveal.

Sam beat off tough competition from hotly tipped new artists Ella Eyre and Chloe Howl to claim the prize. The BRITs Critics Choice Award is voted for by a team of music industry experts, and has previously launched the careers of Adele, Florence & The Machine, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Emeli Sande and Tom Odell.

“I'm completely overwhelmed!” said Sam. “To see my name alongside the list of former winners, artists I admire so much it, is incredible. What an amazing Christmas present. Thank you!”

Despite being a new artist, Sam is no stranger to the Official Singles Chart, and already has two Top 40 hits to his name. He reached Number 11 last October after featuring on Disclosure’s Latch, and hit Number 1 in June of this year with Naughty Boy with the track La La La. La La La is currently the fifth biggest selling single of 2013 so far, with sales of more than 928,000 copies.

The BRIT Awards 2014 will take place on February 19, at London’s O2 Arena, and will be broadcast live on ITV 1.
