The demand for vinyl means the supermarket giant will stock LPs for the first time since the 1980s.

Good news for fans of the black plastic – leading supermarket Sainsbury's has announced it's going to be selling vinyl albums from next week, 21 March.

The superstore says it will sell a mix of current hits and classics, with prices starting at £12. The range available will include huge sellers like The Beatles' Abbey Road, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, Back to Black by Amy Winehouse, along with some of the more successful albums of the year so far.

Speaking to Music Week, Sainsbury’s head of music and books Pete Selby said: "There is an enduring love for this format with music fans and we’re delighted to offer an ongoing selection of titles for everyone, from contemporary releases to much-loved classics. Our customers have rich, varied tastes and our range will naturally reflect this."

The UK's first Official Vinyl Charts launched in April 2015, in a year which saw the format's sales soar to more than 2.9 million, its eighth straight year of growth. 2015's top vinyl seller was Adele's 25.

I can't help but feeling that this vinyl revival is not actually real... the majority of the records on sale are reissues... Adele's "25" aside, everything else is from 10-50 years ago....
And it's not just Sainbsury's, you'll find a very limited number of new vinyl records at HMV and 95% of them will not be pop.

I think you will find that HMV stocks as many 'POP' albums as are available on vinyl. Ellie Goulding, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Rudimental to name but a few! Albums by Little Mix, Jess Glynne and a few other BIG pop albums from the past 12 months simply haven't been released as vinyl records....!

That's the thing, there are very few pop releases on vinyl ... I didn't say that HMV just refuses to stock them. Plus what is "pop music" seems to be highly subjective: I don't consider Ed Sheeran, Rudimental or 5SOS pop !
