The Official Charts are sad to report that Sir Jimmy Savile passed away yesterday (Saturday, October 29), at his home in Leeds just two days before what would have been his 85th birthday.

Sir Jimmy will be remembered by most for his TV show Jim’ll Fix It, where he made the dreams of hundreds of British children come true, however we would especially like to remember him for his pioneering work in music.

Jimmy, who started his career at Radio Luxembourg in 1958 and later became a DJ for BBC Radio 1, was the first presenter of Top Of The Pops, which launched on New Year’s Day, 1964.

Jimmy was also a prolific fundraiser, and has raised an estimated £40 million for charity and good causes over his lifetime. He was awarded the OBE in 1971 and was knighted in 1990 for his charitable works.

He will be greatly missed.
