Red Hot Arctics Land Fourth Number One Album/Example Scores His First Number One Single

12/06/2011

UK indie darlings Arctic Monkeys land their fourth successive number one album as Suck It And See flies to the top of the Official Albums Chart, the Official Charts Company reports today.

Arctic Monkeys are only the second band in chart history, following Keane, to have had four successive albums – all studio albums - debut at number one. Only two other artists, George Michael and Boyzone, have had four successive albums debut at number one but both counting greatest hits packages in their tallies.

Arctic Monkeys’ previous number one albums are Humbug (2009), Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007) and their Mercury prize-winning debut Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006) which broke the then-record for highest first week sales (363,735)  of a debut album  and remains the fastest-selling debut album by a group. Arctic Monkeys have also notched up five Top 10 singles in their career including the two number ones I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor (2005) and When The Sun Goes Down (2005).

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said, “With the Arctic Monkeys cementing their place in the history books so soon after Adele’s phenomenal run at Official Albums Chart number one, British talent is clearly in very good health indeed.”

There are no less than three other new entries in the Official Albums Chart Top 10; eleven-year-old Jacki Evancho, an America’s Got Talent runner-up, is straight in at number four with her debut album Dream With Me which features collaborations with Susan Boyle and Barbara Streisand, the Glee Cast score their ninth Top 10 album with Glee The Music Volume 6 straight in at number six and Wonderland, the girl band formed by X Factor judge Louis Walsh, are straight in at number eight with their debut album, also called Wonderland.

In the Official Singles Chart, UK rapper Example (aka Elliot Gleave) scores his first Official Singles Chart number one with Changed The Way You Kissed Me selling over 115,000 copies.  Example made his chart debut two years ago with Watch The Sun Come Up which peaked at number 19.  Earlier this year he featured on Wretch 32’s number two single Unorthodox.  Example’s third studio album Playing In the Shadows is released later this year.  Example will be playing across the UK and Europe this year, with festival dates including Big Chill, V2011 and Creamfields.

Elsewhere in the Official Singles Chart Top 10, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger’s Right There climbs from last week’s number 14 to this week’s number three, Coldplay score their eleventh Official Singles Chart Top 10 hit with Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall straight in at number six and American singer Dev makes her Official Singles Chart Top 10 debut with Bass Down Low featuring The Cataracs climbing from last week’s number 12 to this week’s number 10.
