Raye's new single is a re-imagining of an R&B-pop classic from the noughties

The singer has no time for your games on her new single, called Decline.

Those who were around for it will easily remember the dominance of hip-hop-meets-R&B-pop in the early 2000s.

The influence of songs by the likes of Ashanti, early Destiny's Child, Brandy, Ciara and Amerie (and Jennifer Lopez circa her 2002 remix album) can be seen in plenty of latest crop of rising stars - Mabel's Finders Keepers and Stefflon Don's Hurtin' Me to name but two.

The latest single from South London newcomer Raye, called Decline, wears its influences particularly plainly on its sleeve.

The track containing elements of Ja Rule and Ashanti's Always On Time - arguably one of the songs that brought the sound to prominence in the first place.

Raye's updated version is more pointed than the original, essentially saying she's had enough of being there for someone else and doesn't have time to answer your phone calls anymore thank you very much. Think Dua Lipa's New Rules with an extra dose of sass.

"I was always there for you, oh/ I was always on time/ And I gave you my all/ So now you call, I decline," she sings on the chorus, adding: "I don't know about you, but I know I'm gonna be fine".

Decline is out on November 3 and follows her recent single The Line. Earlier this year, Raye scored a Top 5 hit featuring on Jax Jones's You Don't Know Me, while last year she guested on Jonas Blue's hit By Your Side.
