The Gallagher brothers were the kings of 7 inch vinyl in 2011, the Official Charts Company can confirm – but with Liam winning out over his older brother Noel.

The former Oasis twosome accounted for six of the Top 10 biggest selling 7 inch singles last year, with Liam’s Beady Eye taking the first and second spot in the end of year chart – with 'The Roller' and 'Millionaire'. Beady Eye overall took four places in the year-end 7 inch Top 10, which is today unveiled by the Official Charts Company.

In comparison, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds was fifth for the year with 'The Death Of You And Me', with a total of two singles in the Top 10 and three in the Top 20. The only other acts to challenge the Gallaghers’ domination were Morrissey’s 'Glamorous Glue' and Arctic Monkeys' 'Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair', in third and eighth for the year respectively.

It wasn’t a great year for seven inch vinyl overall though, with sales down to 122,000 units in 2011, compared to 152,000 in 2010 – according to Official Charts Company stats. Sales of 12 inch singles also fell, to 63,000 from 67,000 in 2010. As a result, total vinyl singles were down 15% to 186,000. Radiohead contributed the biggest selling 12 inch single in the form of 'The Butcher / Supercollider', while Paul Weller’s 'Starlite' was placed second for the year.

In contrast to the decline in vinyl singles sales, vinyl albums reached a six year high, with 341,000 vinyl albums sold in 2011, up 44% compared to 237,000 in 2010. The last time album sales were as high was 2005, when 359,000 vinyl albums were sold.

Radiohead’s 'The King Of Limbs' was the biggest selling vinyl album of the year, ahead of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in second place, and Adele’s '21' in third place. While Beady Eye were on top for seven inch, the band’s debut album, 'Different Gear Still Speeding', was the seventh biggest seller on the vinyl albums chart.
