Olly Murs skips to the top of the Official Singles Chart; Will Young leads over McElderry in the reality stars albums race

24/08/2011

It is looking to be a reality show takeover at the summit of the Official Singles and Albums Charts this weekend, according to today’s Official Chart Update.

X Factor 2009 runner-up, Olly Murs, comfortably leads the pack in the Official Singles Chart with new single Heart Skips A Beat, featuring Rizzle Kicks.  Fresh from performing at last weekend’s V Festival, the Essex-born Xtra Factor presenter is on course to bag his second Number One single this weekend.

A flurry of single releases this week sees Murs joined by three other new entries in the Top Ten; Calvin Harris at Number Two with Feel So Close, fellow reality star Will Young takes third spot with new single Jealousy.  Plus ex-Oasis man, under the moniker of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, is looking set to debut his solo material at Number Nine this Sunday with The Death Of You And Me.

The Official Top Five Singles Update is completed by last week’s chart topper Don’t Go by Wretch 32 Ft. Josh Kumra (4), and Maroon 5 Ft. Christina Aguilera (5) with Moves Like Jagger.

Ten years ago this month since Will Young auditioned as a young hopeful in the first series of Pop Idol, the reality show winner looks on track to score an Official Number One Album on Sunday with his fifth studio album, Echoes.  Going head to head with X Factor 2009 winner Joe McElderry whose second studio album, Classic, enters the Official Albums Chart mid-week in second place.

For the first time in a seemingly invincible run of 31 weeks, Adele may venture out of the Top Two with album, 21, moving to third place in today’s Official Albums Update.  In an equally busy week of album releases, new entries for grime rapper Wretch 32 with Black And White (4), Barbra Streisand’s What Matters Most (5), and Hard-Fi mark their return to the Official Albums Chart with Killer Sounds, on course to enter at Number Seven this weekend.

Amy Winehouse continues to hold firm in the Official Albums Top Ten.  Following her untimely passing last month, Back To Black (9) reaches a significant milestone this week, surpassing James Blunt’s 2005 debut album, Back To Bedlam, to become the biggest selling album of the 21st century.
