We like a good pop tune here at Official Charts HQ. We like them a lot, and throughout 2012 the Official Charts Company are celebrating 60 years of the Official Singles Chart – the home of said pop tunes.

With a little help from you guys, every Friday OfficialCharts.com will be unearthing some of these glorious musical nuggets from days gone by with Official Chart Pop Gem!

Girls Aloud – Biology

2012 is not only the 60th anniversary of the Official Singles Chart, it’s also the 10th anniversary of Girls Aloud getting together.

Earlier this week (October 9), a cryptic ten day countdown appeared on the girls official website, www.girlsaloud.com. The Twittersphere erupted with wild speculation as to what they could possibly be announcing on October 19? A new single? A new album? A tour? Who’s to know, but we’re excited about whatever it is!

To whet your appetites, we’ve decided to make Girls Aloud’s tenth Official Singles Chart Top 40 hit, Biology, this week’s Official Chart Pop Gem.

Released seven years ago this very week, Biology hit Number 4 on the Official Singles Chart, it has since sold nearly 165,000 copies to date. Written by the Xenomania production team Brian Higgins and Miranda Cooper, the reason we love this tune is because it represents sheer value for money.  Allow us to explain...

Pop value for money.  We're talking three or four tunes for the price of one here.

Whether it's Nadine's jingling "Why don't you fool me, feed me, say you need me" intro, or the next rather pleasant "one Alabama return" bit, before racing into Chezza's oh-so-exciting bridge "Closer, your minds firing blind, with your head, in your face getting red, in your heart beats, closer".  Climaxing eventually to the ACTUAL chorus, yes, we're not even at the chorus yet and we've already exploded with pop joy.  Altogether now..."We give it up and then they take it away, a girl’s got to zip it up, and get her head in the shade"

TUUUUUNNNNE!

We're all for throwing out the standard verse/chorus/verse/chorus every once in a while, that's why we give a firm Official Charts salute to the beautifully odd yet wonderfully rewarding structure of this Girls Aloud banger.  Four tunes in one, remember.  That's value.

So, sit back, crank up your PC’s speakers, and enjoy this poptastic moment from Cheryl, Nadine, Sarah, Nicola and Kimberley!
