Veteran rockers AC/DC leapfrog Paul Weller in the Official Albums Chart as the original soundtrack to Iron Man 2 takes the number one spot ahead of Weller’s Wake Up The Nation, the Official Charts Company announces today.
The battle for number one was fiercely fought with Weller ahead in Wednesday’s Official Chart Update, but the AC/DC overtaking him at the weekend.
Iron Man 2 - OST, features 15 classic AC/DC songs selected from ten of the band’s studio albums, ranging from 1976 to 2008. It gives the band their tenth Top 10 and third UK number one album following Back In Black (1980) and Black Ice (2008).
The film Iron Man 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster based on the legendary Marvel superhero Iron Man, opens internationally on April 28th and in the US on May 7th, 2010. Robert Downey Jr. stars along with Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke and Samuel L. Jackson.
Weller may have missed out on the top spot with Wake Up The Nation but the album’s chart debut at number two does secure him the twelfth Top 10 album of his solo career which includes the three number ones Stanley Road (1995), Illumination (2002) and 22 Dreams (2008). In addition, Weller has eleven Top 10 albums with The Jam, including the number one The Gift (1982), five Top 10 albums with Style Council, including the number one Our Favourite Shop (1985).
There are two other new entries in this week’s Official Albums Chart Top 10; Meat Loaf’s Hang Cool Teddy Bear, straight in at number four and Kate Nash’s My Best Friend Is You straight in at number eight.
In the Official Singles Chart Diana Vickers leaps straight to number one with her debut single Once.
An X Factor semi-finalist in 2008, Vickers was signed to RCA records in March 2009 but postponed the launch of her pop career when she was offered the lead of Little Voice in the West End revival of The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice.
Her debut album Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree follows next month.
There are two other new entries in the Official Singles Chart Top 10: Chipmunk’s Until You Were Gone featuring Esmee Denters is straight in at number three and Tina Turner’s The Best is straight in at number nine.
The Best, which originally peaked at number five in 1989, has been supported by a Facebook campaign organised by fans of Glasgow Rangers to celebrate Rangers’ record-breaking 53rd league title which will be decided later today. Tina Tuner was last in the Official Singles Charts Top 10 in 1999 when she peaked at number ten with When The Heartache Is Over.
The Gerry & The Pacemakers’ single You’ll Never Walk Alone, supported by Rangers’ rivals Celtic, is also entered The Official Singles Chart today, at number thirty-three.
